1. Trump's Charity Gambit is Slam Drunk Non-
Profit PR
One thing anyone has to admit about Donald Trump. The man understands how to make a
headline. Recently, The Donald demanded $10 million be paid to charities for him to appear at
the CNN Debate. Many people are already saying Trump being in the race is great for TV, now
Donald is asking CNN to put up or shut up.
In a recent Time Magazine article, Trump suggested he’s such a rating’s draw that CNN should
pony up for him to appear at the presidential debate on September 16. No, he’s not asking for an
appearance fee, Trump wants the cash to go to charity. Here’s his quote right from the article:
“Here’s my question: So if I go to CNN and I say, ‘Look, you’re going to have a massive
audience,’ and if I say to them, ‘I want $10 million for charity, nothing for myself,’ what
happens? I’m not showing up, right?”
Trump upped the ante on this suggestion. He adding the network could split that up ten ways and
donate it to ten deserving charities.
2. It’s really not a bad idea, and hardly far-fetched. After the Fox News GOP debate, on which
Trump got the most talk time, Fox anchors spent days talking about the huge audience they drew
for that telecast. It was, they said – over and over and over again – the highest rated non-sports
cable telecast of all time.
Now would be the time for charities to step up and support the idea. CNN can afford it, they
know a Trump appearance would give them a huge rating’s bump and Trump, if nothing else,
will make them stick to it if they promise. This could turn out the be the biggest charity PR news
of the campaign … or it could turn into just one more headline grabbing tossed off Trump
comment.
One thing’s for sure, Trump won’t say one way or another. He’ll just wait to see how CNN
responds … before very likely taking their pitch and knocking it right out of the park. Did we say
this guy knows PR? Yeah, but you knew that already.
