1. Though self-care has become a “buzz word” in counseling practice and in the professional literature, the efficacy of self-care as a
helpful construct can and should be called into question. Public records point to disciplinary sanctions doled out for unethical and
illegal counselor behavior, most of which can be readily linked to clinicians’ self-care practices (or the lack thereof). The purpose
of this law and ethics workshop is to draw attention to the current status of counselor self-care related conversations — the current
body of knowledge, applicable legal and ethical standards, and common trends in sanctions by state ethics boards — for counselors
practicing in Washington state. Specific recommendations at multiple levels (theoretical, state, professional community, and individual
clinician) will be offered.

Doug Shirley, MEd, MDiv, LMHC | Doug holds masters degrees in Counseling Psychology and Divinity. He is a
doctoral candidate, progressing toward a degree in Pastoral Community Counseling. Doug has been counseling since
1998, and teaching at the college level (undergraduate and graduate) since 1999. He is a licensed mental health
counselor, and an approved supervisor in Washington. Doug is chair of Undergraduate Programs of Argosy University,
Seattle, where he is also an associate professor.
Eric Ström, JD, MA, LMHC | Eric Ström is a licensed attorney and mental health counselor. Through his private law
practice, Ström Consulting, Eric specializes in providing professional ethics consultation, guidance, and legal services
to mental health professionals. Eric also provides legal counsel to U.S. Naval medical facilities throughout the western
United States and the Pacific region as a Lieutenant Commander and attorney in the U.S. Navy reserve. As a licensed
mental health counselor, Eric provides counseling and therapy services to combat veterans through the U.S. Department
of Veterans Affairs at the Veteran’s Center in Everett Washington. Eric earned a Juris Doctorate in law from Wayne
State University, Detroit, and a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from Argosy University, Seattle.
