Dear Elite Minds Montessori Families:
We are all very excited to welcome new friends to Elite Minds Montessori for a great year
of fun and learning! School Starts September 13th! Our family Zoom meeting will be
held on Friday September 10th at 6pm - 7pm. A reminder with Zoom login
information will be emailed as we get closer to the meeting date.
Throughout the year you may hear your child echo some of our school rules and classroom
sayings at home and songs, such as the "Days of the Week" song, the “Continent Song” in
French, Spanish and English. Through repetition and a consistent routine each day our
students feel safe and secure in knowing what to expect in school, and what is expected of
them. As their parents, you are truly your child’s first educator and an essential part of their
education and success in school. We look forward to working together to make sure that
we all provide a nurturing, caring and safe environment where they will continue to grow
and flourish.
As we begin school, it’s important to clarify some basic school/classroom guidelines and
procedures to ensure the safety and well being of our children. Please take the time to read
through our Parent Handbook. We respectfully ask for your help and cooperation in the
coming year.
Looking forward to a fantastic year with everyone!

ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
Morning Arrival:
●Students arrive to school between 8:30am - 8:50am
○ 2s: 8:30am - 8:40am
○ 3s & over: 8:40am - 8:50am
● Please do not arrive later than 8:50am. We all have mornings where unforeseen
circumstances make us late, but please do your best to create a schedule that will enable
your child to arrive on time for school. Your child’s on time arrival will support his/her success
in school each day. Chronic lateness to school is also unsettling for the entire class and
teachers, especially when everyone else has started their day and morning routine. Parents
are not allowed to escort children into the school.
● We have a digital check in/out system. Please download the free Brightwheel application
(Parent Brightwheel form attached) on your phone so that you can use it to check your child in
and out daily. An accurate count of all children is required at all times. This includes knowing
who dropped them off and who picked them up each day. We will only release children to
adults listed on the student’s pick-up list. Please have the adult bring identification. No
exceptions. You will also need to complete your students health check daily on brightwheel
when you sign your child in.
End of Day Dismissal:
● Half day dismissal is at 11:30am/Full day dismissal is at 2:30pm.
● Please use Brightwheel to sign out your child.
● Please add your approved pickups and emergency contact information on your
brightwheel app. They will also be required to use our brightwheel app to sign your
child out.
2
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
● Children who are picked up after 2:35pm will be sent to our Extended Day Program and
families will be billed $40.
● Any changes to your child’s dismissal plan (new pick-up person, etc.) must be added to
your Brightwheel approved pick up list. We will not release your child to anyone other than
those listed on the Approved Pick-up list. In case of a last minute emergency, you must call
us and let us know who will be sent to pick-up your child. This person must provide state or
federal issued identification.
EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM
Our afterschool program is from 2:30 - 5pm. If you would like your child to stay in our
afterschool program, please send us a message on Brightwheel. This program is discounted
if you schedule monthly. It is also available on demand. This is our daily/monthly payment
schedule:
2:30pm - 5pm
Daily $40 (discounted if scheduled monthly)
2 Days per week: $240 / month
3 Days per week: $360 / month
4 Days per week: $480 / month

COMMUNICATION
Who To Contact About What
● If you need information or have a question or comment, it is almost invariably best to go to
the person(s) involved first. Examples: If you have a question/suggestion about your child’s
classroom experience, environment, trips and so on, contact your child’s teachers via
brightwheel or email our Education Director director@elitemindsmontessori.com. If you have a
question about school policy, tuition, or anything administrative/management related, contact
the Administrative Director at enroll@elitemindsmontessori.com.
● We utilize our Brightwheel app to communicate with you. Please use Brightwheel to
communicate non-emergency information/questions and so on with your child’s teachers each
day or as needed, and the teachers will do the same.
● Please try not to initiate non-emergency conversations with your child’s teacher(s) during
Drop-Off and Pick-Up times as the teacher’s primary focus needs to be with the children and
their safe arrival and dismissal. If you need to discuss an issue or concern about your child
and it cannot be communicated via Brightwheel, please ask for a private meeting with the
teacher during a time that the teachers can make themselves safely available. Of course, if
you or your child is having a true emergency, we will be immediately available.

Email/Cell Phones
● The majority of important school information, monthly newsletter and paperwork will be
distributed to families via Brightwheel. Please make sure to provide us with an email/cell phone
that you check daily.
● We all check our Brightwheel application several times a day unless there is a circumstance
preventing it (Professional Development Day, illness, vacation, after school hours, etc.). We do
our best to respond to everyone in a timely manner, but we are also busy working with your
children in the classroom for the entire day except during our lunch hour and the children’s rest
time, so it may take us some time to get back to you. We appreciate your patience and
understanding. Again, if you have an emergency or crisis situation we will respond to you
immediately - please call our school phone 347-916-1433.
● Please email medical and immunization forms to enroll@elitemindsmontessori.com.
We cannot accept forms that are more than a year old. It is important that you email a
new medical health form when your childs has their annual wellness visit.
Backpacks
Each student will be provided with their own EMM napsack. We will put artwork, and the
like in their napsack to go home. Lunch with utensils and snacks should be separate and
placed in their napsack. For children staying in our extended day, please remember to
pack an extra snack.
MISCELLANEOUS CLASS/SCHOOL RELATED FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES
Attendance/Tardy
● Please notify us if your child will be significantly late or absent. If your child is not present an
hour after drop off time (by 9:30am) we will contact you directly. It is best to let us know ahead
6

of time if your child will be late or absent. If your child is absent due to illness for 3 consecutive
days or more you will need to provide a letter from your pediatrician stating that your child is
well enough to return to school (read below under ‘Illness and Contagious outbreaks). This is
an enforceable policy set forth by both NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Please
also see our COVID ADDENDUM.
Illness/Contagious Outbreaks
At some time during the school year, your child is going to become ill. This happens to all
children and these guidelines are to help you understand how to deal with illness when your
child is enrolled in school. We strongly suggest that you have a back-up care plan for your
child now, before they become ill.
It is very important to inform the school as soon as possible when your child is ill, or even if
they are not feeling well. This helps us plan for the health and safety of the other children in
the school. If your child was ill the night before but is well enough to attend in the morning, tell
the staff about how your child was feeling.
For most mild illnesses, your child will be allowed to attend school. However, when s/he has
any of the following symptoms, we ask that you keep your child home. These symptoms
include:
●COVID - 19 Symptoms
● Diarrhea or vomiting
● Fever over 100.4
degrees
● Severe coughing or trouble
breathing
7
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
● Conjunctivitis (pink-eye). Crusting, redness, or swollen eyes may indicate pink-eye and a
child should be excluded from school until seen by a doctor.
● Unusual spots or rashes
● Severe diaper rash
● Infected skin patches
● Headache
● Stiff neck
● Sore throat or trouble swallowing
● Loss of Appetite
● Unusual behavior (lethargy, excessive crying, aggression, etc.)
● Ringworm
● Lice *(See below for more info on exclusion due to lice).
If your child develops any of these symptoms while at school, we will call you and ask you to
take your child out of school and they may not return until they are fever or symptom-free for
24 full hours for most of the above, per the NYC Department of Health. In cases of highly
contagious ailments (COVID-19, pink-eye, ringworm, influenza, RSV) a doctor’s note is
needed declaring your child well enough to return to school.
In case of severe illness or injury which needs urgent care while at Elite Minds Montessori, the
Director or a designated staff person in charge will accompany the child to the emergency room
of the nearest hospital. (NYU Langone Health - Cobble Hill 83 Amity St. Brooklyn, NY 11201).
A designated staff member will be left in charge at the school and will notify the child’s
parent/caregiver of the incident and ask the parent/caregiver to meet the Director or staff
person at the place of emergency care. If the parent/caregiver cannot be reached, we will notify
an alternate emergency contact that has previously been specified in writing. Following
resolution of the incident, the Director will prepare an injury or illness report.
8
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
If your child is out of school for 3 or more days, you will need to provide a note from
her/his pediatrician, stating that s/he is well enough to return to school. Please
review attached instructions related to COVID.
Lice – Elite Minds Montessori has a strict No Lice & No Nit (eggs) policy. To limit the exposure
of lice in school, we may periodically bring in a professional lice prevention company to check
all children and staff during “high season” times of the year and you will be notified if your child
is found to have lice or nits. If you discover lice or nits in your child’s hair we ask that you notify
us immediately so that we can alert the other families and try to contain it from spreading. All
notifications will keep the affected party(ies) anonymous. We take great care and sensitivity in
how it is dealt with in the classroom, and we do everything possible to respect the needs of
every family. The following regulations are set forth by the NYC Department of Health and
Hygiene and the NYCDOE Division of Early Childhood Education.
To avoid the spread of lice and/or nits in school:
● Students who have lice must be excluded from the program for 24 hours after
receiving treatment and becoming lice/nit free.
● Teachers and/or staff must check the affected child’s head upon returning to school to
make sure the student is lice/nit-free before readmission to school.
● Students will continue to be sent home if the family has not complied with the lice & nit-free
policy of the NYC Department of Health and Hygiene, even if the student returns to school
with a doctor’s note clearing their return.
● A note from a physician is not a requirement for a student who has lice to return to school
after missing 3 or more days due to lice.
9
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
Snacks and Meals (Nut free)
● All students should bring a healthy NUT FREE lunch and snack with a beverage daily in a
lunchbox or lunch bag CLEARLY LABELED WITH THEIR NAME. Please place the snacks
in a separate bag since they have snacks at 10am and lunch is in the afternoon (around
12pm).
● We will store lunches in students' backpacks, so if they need to be kept cold, please provide
a cold ice pack with their lunch.
● Unfortunately, we cannot reheat students’ lunches from home. Snacks and meal times can
be wonderful learning opportunities for all of us. The children talk to each other about what
they are eating and we share stories about our weekends, families and friends. If your child
prefers to eat a hot lunch, a heat retaining Thermos works very well.
-PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT BY MINIMIZING WASTE AND USING
REUSABLE CONTAINERS.
Clothes
● Children should be dressed in comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the weather that
day so that your child can play outdoors and walk comfortably. Please do not send your child
to school in clothing that will be upsetting to you if it is soiled or stained as we do many fun
(sometimes) messy art and science projects. We will spend a lot of time outdoors so please
dress your child appropriately.
● Please make sure that your child has at least 2 seasonally appropriate FULL change of
clothing at all times—this includes socks and underwear. If your child is in the process of
potty training or is prone to accidents, please make sure s/he has at least 4 full changes of
clothing. Please remember to take home wet or soiled clothing on the same day.
● PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S CLOTHING AND BELONGINGS AND PLACE
IN A GALLON SIZE ZIPLOCK BAG.
10
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
● Please provide “indoor shoes” and label them, for students to wear only in the classroom
and to be kept in the classroom. These shoes should be easy for the children to take on and
off by themselves. Please do not send in shoes that need to be tied.
Rest Time
● Children who stay in school for a full day will have a rest period after lunch.
● Our scheduled rest time is approximately 45 - 60 minutes.
● We understand that not all children nap and do less so as they grow older. However, it is
important that children rest/relax their bodies for a minimum of 30 minutes. If your child does
not nap, s/he is still required to lay quietly on their cots with a book or quiet toy/puzzle. After 30
minutes, children who are not napping are allowed to engage in a quiet activity for the
remainder of the rest period.
● Please bring a crib sized sheet and a light top sheet or blanket (optional) sealed in a
gallon ziploc bag or cloth bag from home for rest time. Your child’s sheets will stay in school
for the week and must be taken home and laundered at the end of your child’s school week.
Please do not send anything larger OR smaller than a crib sized sheet for their cot as it will
not fit properly and could pose sanitary issues.
● Please note that pillows, baby bottles and pacifiers are not permitted to be used at any time,
per the NYC Department of Health and Hygiene.
Toys from Home
● Children are NOT allowed to bring in toys from home if they do, it will be stored in their
cubby for the day, not to be used at school.
○ Exceptions will be made for when we have a designated show and tell
day, which will be notified in your child’s Brightwheel app.

Parent/Caregiver/Emergency Contact Availability
● A parent/caregiver or a child’s emergency contacts must be able to respond promptly in
the event that a child becomes ill or in case of an emergency. Please make sure you have
your emergency contact information on brightwheel. Make sure it is updated as needed.
● Every family must provide at least 2 Emergency Contacts in addition to the parent(s).
● For families with limited friends and family in the area, please reach out to the director
via email so that we can come up with a safe plan for your child in case of an emergency.
● Any changes made to contacts, visitors, phone numbers, and other concerns re:
allergies, medications, restrictions, etc. must be done so in writing.
Allergies/Dietary Restrictions/Medical Forms/Vaccinations
● If your child has a food allergy, a copy of your child’s emergency action plan, epi-pen
and/or inhaler must be kept at the school if necessary.
● Dietary Restrictions must be communicated with administration in writing.
● Medical Forms must be completed by your pediatrician and updated annually or when
needed (at the child’s well visit). DOH requires these forms prior to the child starting
school. The medical form is also on our website.
● The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued School
Admission Immunization Requirements. The law requires that all new students—children
entering day care, nursery school, pre-school or pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through
grade 12 in New York City for the first time—must show proof of having received a complete
medical evaluation and up-to-date vaccinations. This includes the Influenza Vaccination.
There are no longer exemptions from immunizations due to religious beliefs.
Field Trips:
● During the year, we take a number of neighborhood walking trips. Please make sure that
12
DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
you have signed the consent slip (see attached).
Strollers/Scooters/Large Misc Items Stored in School
● We cannot keep strollers (no matter the size, folded, etc.), scooters or helmets inside the
school for any length of time throughout the day.
● If you choose to leave your stroller outside the school; please understand that we are
not responsible for strollers/scooters and they will be left at your own risk.
Birthday celebrations
● Your child's special day is certainly a day to celebrate. We encourage you to bring an
activity for all the children to share and bring a book to be donated to our library. We celebrate
with a ceremony called The Celebration of Life. The birthday child walks around a
Montessori sun, while carrying the earth and we all sing. Please email us to coordinate the
date/time of the celebration.
Expulsion/Termination of Enrollment Agreement:
If mutually determined by EMM administration and teachers that a student may require additional
support services outside of EMM, the parent/guardian will cooperate with such evaluation. EMM will
provide resources or parent/guardian can choose their own service at will. If a parent/guardian
refuses such an evaluation, EMM reserves the right to terminate the enrollment agreement for the
school year and forfeit the non-refundable deposit.

  • 1. PARENT HANDBOOK MISSION STATEMENT Elite Minds Montessori is a private preschool in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn for children ages 2 to 6 years old. At Elite Minds Montessori we offer a nurturing multilingual (English, Spanish and French) environment where children can develop their unique skills and potential by engaging their minds in art, music and play in a traditional Montessori setting. Elite Minds Montessori 117 Union Street Brooklyn, NY 11231 school: (347) 916-1433 enroll@elitemindsmontessori.com www.EliteMindsMontessori.com We are proud to be a member of American Montessori Society (AMS) DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 2. June 14, 2021 Dear Elite Minds Montessori Families: We are all very excited to welcome new friends to Elite Minds Montessori for a great year of fun and learning! School Starts September 13th! Our family Zoom meeting will be held on Friday September 10th at 6pm - 7pm. A reminder with Zoom login information will be emailed as we get closer to the meeting date. Throughout the year you may hear your child echo some of our school rules and classroom sayings at home and songs, such as the "Days of the Week" song, the “Continent Song” in French, Spanish and English. Through repetition and a consistent routine each day our students feel safe and secure in knowing what to expect in school, and what is expected of them. As their parents, you are truly your child’s first educator and an essential part of their education and success in school. We look forward to working together to make sure that we all provide a nurturing, caring and safe environment where they will continue to grow and flourish. As we begin school, it’s important to clarify some basic school/classroom guidelines and procedures to ensure the safety and well being of our children. Please take the time to read through our Parent Handbook. We respectfully ask for your help and cooperation in the coming year. Looking forward to a fantastic year with everyone! • 3. ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL PROCEDURES Morning Arrival: ●Students arrive to school between 8:30am - 8:50am ○ 2s: 8:30am - 8:40am ○ 3s & over: 8:40am - 8:50am ● Please do not arrive later than 8:50am. We all have mornings where unforeseen circumstances make us late, but please do your best to create a schedule that will enable your child to arrive on time for school. Your child’s on time arrival will support his/her success in school each day. Chronic lateness to school is also unsettling for the entire class and teachers, especially when everyone else has started their day and morning routine. Parents are not allowed to escort children into the school. ● We have a digital check in/out system. Please download the free Brightwheel application (Parent Brightwheel form attached) on your phone so that you can use it to check your child in and out daily. An accurate count of all children is required at all times. This includes knowing who dropped them off and who picked them up each day. We will only release children to adults listed on the student’s pick-up list. Please have the adult bring identification. No exceptions. You will also need to complete your students health check daily on brightwheel when you sign your child in. End of Day Dismissal: ● Half day dismissal is at 11:30am/Full day dismissal is at 2:30pm. ● Please use Brightwheel to sign out your child. ● Please add your approved pickups and emergency contact information on your brightwheel app. They will also be required to use our brightwheel app to sign your child out. 2 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 4. ● Children who are picked up after 2:35pm will be sent to our Extended Day Program and families will be billed $40. ● Any changes to your child’s dismissal plan (new pick-up person, etc.) must be added to your Brightwheel approved pick up list. We will not release your child to anyone other than those listed on the Approved Pick-up list. In case of a last minute emergency, you must call us and let us know who will be sent to pick-up your child. This person must provide state or federal issued identification. EXTENDED DAY PROGRAM Our afterschool program is from 2:30 - 5pm. If you would like your child to stay in our afterschool program, please send us a message on Brightwheel. This program is discounted if you schedule monthly. It is also available on demand. This is our daily/monthly payment schedule: 2:30pm - 5pm Daily $40 (discounted if scheduled monthly) 2 Days per week: $240 / month 3 Days per week: $360 / month 4 Days per week: $480 / month 5 Days per week: $600 / month 3 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 5. COMMUNICATION Who To Contact About What ● If you need information or have a question or comment, it is almost invariably best to go to the person(s) involved first. Examples: If you have a question/suggestion about your child’s classroom experience, environment, trips and so on, contact your child’s teachers via brightwheel or email our Education Director director@elitemindsmontessori.com. If you have a question about school policy, tuition, or anything administrative/management related, contact the Administrative Director at enroll@elitemindsmontessori.com. ● We utilize our Brightwheel app to communicate with you. Please use Brightwheel to communicate non-emergency information/questions and so on with your child’s teachers each day or as needed, and the teachers will do the same. ● Please try not to initiate non-emergency conversations with your child’s teacher(s) during Drop-Off and Pick-Up times as the teacher’s primary focus needs to be with the children and their safe arrival and dismissal. If you need to discuss an issue or concern about your child and it cannot be communicated via Brightwheel, please ask for a private meeting with the teacher during a time that the teachers can make themselves safely available. Of course, if you or your child is having a true emergency, we will be immediately available. 4 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 6. 5 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 7. Email/Cell Phones ● The majority of important school information, monthly newsletter and paperwork will be distributed to families via Brightwheel. Please make sure to provide us with an email/cell phone that you check daily. ● We all check our Brightwheel application several times a day unless there is a circumstance preventing it (Professional Development Day, illness, vacation, after school hours, etc.). We do our best to respond to everyone in a timely manner, but we are also busy working with your children in the classroom for the entire day except during our lunch hour and the children’s rest time, so it may take us some time to get back to you. We appreciate your patience and understanding. Again, if you have an emergency or crisis situation we will respond to you immediately - please call our school phone 347-916-1433. ● Please email medical and immunization forms to enroll@elitemindsmontessori.com. We cannot accept forms that are more than a year old. It is important that you email a new medical health form when your childs has their annual wellness visit. Backpacks Each student will be provided with their own EMM napsack. We will put artwork, and the like in their napsack to go home. Lunch with utensils and snacks should be separate and placed in their napsack. For children staying in our extended day, please remember to pack an extra snack. MISCELLANEOUS CLASS/SCHOOL RELATED FAMILY RESPONSIBILITIES Attendance/Tardy ● Please notify us if your child will be significantly late or absent. If your child is not present an hour after drop off time (by 9:30am) we will contact you directly. It is best to let us know ahead 6 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 8. of time if your child will be late or absent. If your child is absent due to illness for 3 consecutive days or more you will need to provide a letter from your pediatrician stating that your child is well enough to return to school (read below under ‘Illness and Contagious outbreaks). This is an enforceable policy set forth by both NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Please also see our COVID ADDENDUM. Illness/Contagious Outbreaks At some time during the school year, your child is going to become ill. This happens to all children and these guidelines are to help you understand how to deal with illness when your child is enrolled in school. We strongly suggest that you have a back-up care plan for your child now, before they become ill. It is very important to inform the school as soon as possible when your child is ill, or even if they are not feeling well. This helps us plan for the health and safety of the other children in the school. If your child was ill the night before but is well enough to attend in the morning, tell the staff about how your child was feeling. For most mild illnesses, your child will be allowed to attend school. However, when s/he has any of the following symptoms, we ask that you keep your child home. These symptoms include: ●COVID - 19 Symptoms ● Diarrhea or vomiting ● Fever over 100.4 degrees ● Severe coughing or trouble breathing 7 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 9. ● Conjunctivitis (pink-eye). Crusting, redness, or swollen eyes may indicate pink-eye and a child should be excluded from school until seen by a doctor. ● Unusual spots or rashes ● Severe diaper rash ● Infected skin patches ● Headache ● Stiff neck ● Sore throat or trouble swallowing ● Loss of Appetite ● Unusual behavior (lethargy, excessive crying, aggression, etc.) ● Ringworm ● Lice *(See below for more info on exclusion due to lice). If your child develops any of these symptoms while at school, we will call you and ask you to take your child out of school and they may not return until they are fever or symptom-free for 24 full hours for most of the above, per the NYC Department of Health. In cases of highly contagious ailments (COVID-19, pink-eye, ringworm, influenza, RSV) a doctor’s note is needed declaring your child well enough to return to school. In case of severe illness or injury which needs urgent care while at Elite Minds Montessori, the Director or a designated staff person in charge will accompany the child to the emergency room of the nearest hospital. (NYU Langone Health - Cobble Hill 83 Amity St. Brooklyn, NY 11201). A designated staff member will be left in charge at the school and will notify the child’s parent/caregiver of the incident and ask the parent/caregiver to meet the Director or staff person at the place of emergency care. If the parent/caregiver cannot be reached, we will notify an alternate emergency contact that has previously been specified in writing. Following resolution of the incident, the Director will prepare an injury or illness report. 8 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 10. If your child is out of school for 3 or more days, you will need to provide a note from her/his pediatrician, stating that s/he is well enough to return to school. Please review attached instructions related to COVID. Lice – Elite Minds Montessori has a strict No Lice & No Nit (eggs) policy. To limit the exposure of lice in school, we may periodically bring in a professional lice prevention company to check all children and staff during “high season” times of the year and you will be notified if your child is found to have lice or nits. If you discover lice or nits in your child’s hair we ask that you notify us immediately so that we can alert the other families and try to contain it from spreading. All notifications will keep the affected party(ies) anonymous. We take great care and sensitivity in how it is dealt with in the classroom, and we do everything possible to respect the needs of every family. The following regulations are set forth by the NYC Department of Health and Hygiene and the NYCDOE Division of Early Childhood Education. To avoid the spread of lice and/or nits in school: ● Students who have lice must be excluded from the program for 24 hours after receiving treatment and becoming lice/nit free. ● Teachers and/or staff must check the affected child’s head upon returning to school to make sure the student is lice/nit-free before readmission to school. ● Students will continue to be sent home if the family has not complied with the lice & nit-free policy of the NYC Department of Health and Hygiene, even if the student returns to school with a doctor’s note clearing their return. ● A note from a physician is not a requirement for a student who has lice to return to school after missing 3 or more days due to lice. 9 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 11. Snacks and Meals (Nut free) ● All students should bring a healthy NUT FREE lunch and snack with a beverage daily in a lunchbox or lunch bag CLEARLY LABELED WITH THEIR NAME. Please place the snacks in a separate bag since they have snacks at 10am and lunch is in the afternoon (around 12pm). ● We will store lunches in students' backpacks, so if they need to be kept cold, please provide a cold ice pack with their lunch. ● Unfortunately, we cannot reheat students’ lunches from home. Snacks and meal times can be wonderful learning opportunities for all of us. The children talk to each other about what they are eating and we share stories about our weekends, families and friends. If your child prefers to eat a hot lunch, a heat retaining Thermos works very well. -PLEASE HELP US TO HELP THE ENVIRONMENT BY MINIMIZING WASTE AND USING REUSABLE CONTAINERS. Clothes ● Children should be dressed in comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the weather that day so that your child can play outdoors and walk comfortably. Please do not send your child to school in clothing that will be upsetting to you if it is soiled or stained as we do many fun (sometimes) messy art and science projects. We will spend a lot of time outdoors so please dress your child appropriately. ● Please make sure that your child has at least 2 seasonally appropriate FULL change of clothing at all times—this includes socks and underwear. If your child is in the process of potty training or is prone to accidents, please make sure s/he has at least 4 full changes of clothing. Please remember to take home wet or soiled clothing on the same day. ● PLEASE LABEL ALL OF YOUR CHILD’S CLOTHING AND BELONGINGS AND PLACE IN A GALLON SIZE ZIPLOCK BAG. 10 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 12. ● Please provide “indoor shoes” and label them, for students to wear only in the classroom and to be kept in the classroom. These shoes should be easy for the children to take on and off by themselves. Please do not send in shoes that need to be tied. Rest Time ● Children who stay in school for a full day will have a rest period after lunch. ● Our scheduled rest time is approximately 45 - 60 minutes. ● We understand that not all children nap and do less so as they grow older. However, it is important that children rest/relax their bodies for a minimum of 30 minutes. If your child does not nap, s/he is still required to lay quietly on their cots with a book or quiet toy/puzzle. After 30 minutes, children who are not napping are allowed to engage in a quiet activity for the remainder of the rest period. ● Please bring a crib sized sheet and a light top sheet or blanket (optional) sealed in a gallon ziploc bag or cloth bag from home for rest time. Your child’s sheets will stay in school for the week and must be taken home and laundered at the end of your child’s school week. Please do not send anything larger OR smaller than a crib sized sheet for their cot as it will not fit properly and could pose sanitary issues. ● Please note that pillows, baby bottles and pacifiers are not permitted to be used at any time, per the NYC Department of Health and Hygiene. Toys from Home ● Children are NOT allowed to bring in toys from home if they do, it will be stored in their cubby for the day, not to be used at school. ○ Exceptions will be made for when we have a designated show and tell day, which will be notified in your child’s Brightwheel app. 11 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 13. Parent/Caregiver/Emergency Contact Availability ● A parent/caregiver or a child’s emergency contacts must be able to respond promptly in the event that a child becomes ill or in case of an emergency. Please make sure you have your emergency contact information on brightwheel. Make sure it is updated as needed. ● Every family must provide at least 2 Emergency Contacts in addition to the parent(s). ● For families with limited friends and family in the area, please reach out to the director via email so that we can come up with a safe plan for your child in case of an emergency. ● Any changes made to contacts, visitors, phone numbers, and other concerns re: allergies, medications, restrictions, etc. must be done so in writing. Allergies/Dietary Restrictions/Medical Forms/Vaccinations ● If your child has a food allergy, a copy of your child’s emergency action plan, epi-pen and/or inhaler must be kept at the school if necessary. ● Dietary Restrictions must be communicated with administration in writing. ● Medical Forms must be completed by your pediatrician and updated annually or when needed (at the child’s well visit). DOH requires these forms prior to the child starting school. The medical form is also on our website. ● The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has issued School Admission Immunization Requirements. The law requires that all new students—children entering day care, nursery school, pre-school or pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through grade 12 in New York City for the first time—must show proof of having received a complete medical evaluation and up-to-date vaccinations. This includes the Influenza Vaccination. There are no longer exemptions from immunizations due to religious beliefs. Field Trips: ● During the year, we take a number of neighborhood walking trips. Please make sure that 12 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
  • 14. you have signed the consent slip (see attached). Strollers/Scooters/Large Misc Items Stored in School ● We cannot keep strollers (no matter the size, folded, etc.), scooters or helmets inside the school for any length of time throughout the day. ● If you choose to leave your stroller outside the school; please understand that we are not responsible for strollers/scooters and they will be left at your own risk. Birthday celebrations ● Your child's special day is certainly a day to celebrate. We encourage you to bring an activity for all the children to share and bring a book to be donated to our library. We celebrate with a ceremony called The Celebration of Life. The birthday child walks around a Montessori sun, while carrying the earth and we all sing. Please email us to coordinate the date/time of the celebration. Expulsion/Termination of Enrollment Agreement: If mutually determined by EMM administration and teachers that a student may require additional support services outside of EMM, the parent/guardian will cooperate with such evaluation. EMM will provide resources or parent/guardian can choose their own service at will. If a parent/guardian refuses such an evaluation, EMM reserves the right to terminate the enrollment agreement for the school year and forfeit the non-refundable deposit.   13 DocuSign Envelope ID: 61AD8C2D-A785-47DC-B7C0-F5DF1A08C1A3
