MISSION
The mission of the Knoxville Film Festival is to recognize and
celebrate the art of independent cinema. It exists to provide
a stimulating gathering in which the lovers and creators of
independent cinema come together to see and discuss interesting
works from local, regional, national, and international filmmakers.

3. Although 2013 is the first year of the Knoxville Film Festival (KFF), its
history dates back nearly a decade. In 2004, East Tennessee filmmaker
Keith McDaniel held the first Secret City Film Festival (SCFF) in the nearby
town of Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Over the next eight years, the SCFF grew
into a regional film festival welcoming special guests and filmmakers from
across the region and screening some of the country’s finest independent
films. In 2009, SCFF added the Secret City 7-Day Shootout Filmmaking
Competition whereby teams of filmmakers have seven days to make a
7-minute film. With more than 200 local filmmakers participating each
year, the 7-Day Shootout became one of the highlights of the film festival.
With the steady growth of SCFF and a desire to hold the film festival in an
actual movie theater, McDaniel decided it was time to move the film festival
from Oak Ridge to Knoxville. Working with Regal Entertainment Group
(the world’s largest theater chain – which happens to be headquartered
in Knoxville), McDaniel held the 9th annual SCFF in September 2012 at
the Regal Downtown West Cinema 8 – Knoxville’s local art house movie
theater. The move proved to be a good choice with the festival nearly
doubling in attendance and invigorating the local filmmaking community.
In addition, SCFF became one of the very first film festivals in the country
that screened every film in the Digital Cinema Package (DCP) format –
the industry standard for digital movie projection.
With the success of SCFF moving to Knoxville, McDaniel was looking for
ways to make the festival even larger and more exciting. At about the
same time, McDaniel was approached by Lisa Duncan, executive director
of Dogwood Arts, a local non-profit that has been promoting the arts and
holding the Dogwood Arts Festival in East Tennessee every Spring for
more than 50 years. With Dogwood Arts already promoting all types of
East Tennessee arts and artists, they also had a desire to promote the art
of independent cinema. After several months of discussion, an agreement
was made whereby McDaniel and Dogwood Arts would partner to create
the Knoxville Film Festival. After nine years, the Secret City Film Festival
was to be no more, but the new Knoxville Film Festival!
Between Dogwood Arts’ capable and experienced event promotion
skills and McDaniel’s experience as the founder and director of SCFF, the
Knoxville Film Festival promises to be the biggest and best film festival
in the region, offering more opportunities and exposure to local, regional
and national filmmakers and creating a film festival experience of which
all creators and lovers of independent cinema can be proud!






4. Welcome to the inaugural Knoxville Film Festival! I am honored to
greet you on behalf of the citizens of our great city and excited
about this new venture. Our arts community is a flourishing
one that should be celebrated through independent cinema as
well as other creative outlets. From the selection of screenings
to the filmmaking competitions, this film festival will be an
opportunity for supporters and creators to come together and
promote filmmaking in Knoxville. Thanks to Secret City Films and
Dogwood Arts who partnered to produce this first festival. May
there be many more to come.
OPENING NIGHT

located in a large tent outside Regal Downtown
West Cinema 8, will offer heavy hors d’oeuvres, wine,

filmmakers, writers, actors, and film lovers alike.
The reception will be followed by a special screening
of Short Term 12, the recent Grand Jury and Audience
Winner at the South by Southwest Film Festival in
Austin, Texas.

On behalf of Knox County, I want to welcome you to the first-
ever Knoxville Film Festival. This event is a great way to showcase
filmmaking talent from across the region and across the country.
Festivals like this one highlight the vibrant arts and culture
community that we have here in East Tennessee. Knoxville is
a great place for an event like this, because this community is
home to several world-class video and multimedia production
companies. While you’re here, I hope you take the time to enjoy
everything that Knoxville and Knox County have to offer.
It is my pleasure to welcome the Film Community members to the
inaugural year of the Knoxville Film Festival. Knoxville is ready for
its close up with all the film makers and their support staff. We

Short Term 12 is told through the eyes of Grace (Brie Larson), a twenty-something
supervisor at a foster-care facility for at-risk teenagers. Passionate and tough, Grace
is a formidable caretaker of the kids in her charge – and in love with her long-term
boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher, Jr.). But Grace’s own difficult past and
the surprising future that suddenly presents itself throw her into unforeseen confusion,
made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility – Jayden (Kaitlyn
Dever), a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.
She and Mason also struggle to help Marcus (Keith Stanfield) – an intense, quiet kid who
is about to turn 18 – manage through the difficulty of having to leave the facility. Grace
comes to find in both her work and the new teenager in her care, surprising sources
of redemption. And while the subject matter is complex and often dark, this lovingly
realized film finds truth – and humor – in unexpected places.

CYLK COZART is a native Knoxvillian who left Tennessee with dreams
of becoming a professional basketball player. When a injury cut short his
promising NBA career, Cylk focused his attention on modeling and acting.
His early acting credits include Spike Lee’s School Daze and The Fresh Prince
of Bel-Air. He is most recognized for White Men Can’t Jump, Conspiracy
Theory, 16 Blocks, Eraser, and Stephen Spielberg’s Eagle Eye. Along with
acting, Cylk is an award-winning producer and director and in 2012 was
presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by Martin Luther King, III and
Academy Award winner Lou Gossett, Jr.
TERRY MILLER, a native Knoxvillian, has worked for Regal Entertainment
Group for 19 years, most recently as a Film Buyer. Away from the office,
she enjoys hiking the Great Smoky Mountains and doing anything
involving physical fitness. She is an avid independent film fan and adores
Oscar season. Her favorite genre is drama and she is a regular patron at

KNOX COUNTY MAYOR TIM BURCHETT took office on Sept. 1, 2010,
after serving 16 years in the Tennessee General Assembly. Mayor Burchett
attributes his commitment to a career in public service to his parents,
Charlie and Joyce Burchett, who both had lifelong careers in public
education. Mayor Burchett is a member of the Bearden High School
Bulldog graduating class of 1982, and a graduate of the University of
Tennessee, where he earned a degree in education. He served four years in

MARK BORCHERT is the chair of Communication and director of Film
Studies for Carson-Newman University in Jefferson City, TN. He holds a
Ph.D. in Communication and a master’s degree in television and film. He
has worked and published in many areas of media, especially in the field
of documentary film. He also is director of the Mossy Creek Documentary
Arts Festival at his university.
ERIN DONOVAN Darin’ Erin or maybe the Biscuit Queen, she’ll answer to
anything. While staying close to her daring TV roots Erin has moved over to
be the Communications Director for Visit Knoxville. Over the past twenty
or so years Erin was a videographer in TV markets across the Northeast
then landed in Knoxville. Erin has worked with the film festivals in Knoxville
for the past five years and is half of the Film Fatale team that hit the ground
on last year’s movie scene. Erin was also the Executive Producer on a
Knoxville based film. Erin has numerous awards for her work in TV news
including Emmy and AP awards.
MICHAEL MOORE has been involved in the Knoxville film and television
community since moving to Knoxville 30 years ago. As a talent with Talent
Trek Agency, Michael has worked in both print and film for a number of
local companies including Scripps Networks, Jewelry Television and Sea Ray
Boats. Michael served on the East Tennessee Film and Television Commission
and is the founder of the Knoxville African American Film Festival.

HALLERIN HILTON HILL has been a top-rated drive-time radio talk show
host for more than 27 years and for over a decade he’s produced and
hosted the TV talk show Anything Is Possible on East Tennessee’s top-rated
station. He has worked with the DIY Network and has appeared in national
TV commercials and served as narrator/host for several documentaries. As
a songwriter, Hallerin co-wrote “Who Would Imagine a King,” recorded by
Whitney Houston for the movie The Preacher’s Wife. He is the author of the
best-selling self-help book, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and has spent the
last 20 years working with some of America’s top organizations as a speaker
and trainer.
AMY LEIGH HUBBARD serves as the Director of Community Engagement
for East Tennessee PBS. Amy directed and produced East Tennessee
MAKERS, working with four heavy hitting women in the East Tennessee
region, and is field producer for A Fork in the Road with Chef Garrett. On
camera, Amy has worked with Paul Harrill in the award winning short, Gina,
An Actress, Age 29 and in the upcoming feature Something Anything. Amy
was the Artistic Director and co-founder of the Actors Co-op, a non-profit
theatre company focused on inventive, entertaining and thought provoking
performance. Amy has two amazing daughters that rock her world daily.
COURTNEY WHITE is VP of programming for HGTV and DIY Network. In
this role, she has created hit series: Hawaii Life, Selling Spelling Manor, and
Scoring the Deal. As a producer, White’s credits include award-winning
HBO documentaries: Through a Child’s Eyes: September 11, 2001, ‘Twas the
Night and Dealing Dogs as well as IFC’s feature comedy May the Best Man
Win. White holds a BFA in Film and Television from New York University’s

NATALIE CANERDAY is a native of Russellville, Arkansas, has appeared in 35
films, from the big-budget box office favorites October Sky, Walk the Line,
and Biloxi Blues, to the low-budget, critically-acclaimed independent films
Sling Blade, One False Move, and Shotgun Stories. In 1997, Natalie and the
cast of Sling Blade were nominated for Best Performance by an Ensemble
Cast at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. In 2000, she participated in Robert
Redford’s Sundance Institute Filmmaker’s Lab along with Sally Field, Jake
Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, others. Natalie also serves on the Advisory
Board for the George Lindsey UNA Film Festival in Florence, Alabama.
MAX SHORES is a thirty-year veteran of TV and documentary film production.
His work has been featured on Alabama Public Television, Mississippi Public
Broadcasting, and PBS stations nationwide. His documentaries have also
been screened at film festivals around the world. He has been training
students in documentary production both in the field and as adjunct faculty
at the University of Alabama since 1984.
JIM OWENS has been involved in film and television for over thirty years
in over forty countries. He has authored multiple books including Video
Production Handbook and Television Production. Owens has also been
involved in the broadcast production of thirteen Olympics and is currently
serving as a consultant on the broadcast of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics
for the broadcast division of the International Olympic Committee. He
serves as Dean of the School of Communication Arts and Professor of
Media at Asbury University in Wilmore, KY.

to be behind the camera. His films have been in over 75 festivals from
Cannes to New York City. Nic is the owner of BeeryMedia.com, a
boutique film production company in Carrboro, North Carolina, and the
founder and chair of The Carrboro Film Festival, now in its eighth year.
Nic is also lead instructor for Duke University’s Full Frame Documentary
Film Festival’s School of Doc, a summer intensive filmmaking course
designed to introduce High School students to all facets of filmmaking
with an eye in steering them toward a career in film.
CHRISTOPHER HANSEN in an award-winning writer and director who
spends most of his spare time chasing around his four kids with the
help of his beautiful wife. Where We Started is his third feature film,
following The Proper Care & Feeding of an American Messiah and
Endings. He is also Director of the Film & Digital Media program at
Baylor University.
JULI JACKSON is a media artist working in film, photography, and
animation. A native to Arkansas, Juli holds a BFA in Film and Video. In
2005, Jackson acted as Director of Photography for 2 Philadelphia-
based independent features Beat the Air and God’s Country, Off
Route 9. During a three year stay in Los Angeles, Jackson contributed
lighting design and camerawork on a number of feature films and
other projects. Juli’s first feature film 45RPM won the Made In
Arkansas: Best Feature and Best Actress awards at the 2013 Little
Rock Film Festival. 45RPM screens Sunday (Film Block 18) at the
Knoxville Film Festival.

The Knoxville Film Festival’s 7-Day Shootout is a filmmaking competition where teams
of filmmakers have seven days to make a seven-minute film. On August 21, 25 teams
were given a film genre for their film and instructions that they must incorporate an East
Tennessee landmark [filmmaker’s choice] into their film. Over the course of the week,
more than 250 local writers, directors, actors, editors, and others worked to complete
their assignment and 21 of the 25 original teams submitted their film by the deadline. The
films have been judged by a jury of their peers and the best films will be recognized at
our Awards Presentation on Sunday, September 22 at 7:30pm. Join us in congratulating
these hard-working and creative filmmakers and enjoy watching the fruits of their
filmmaking labors!

JOHN FELD began as a producer for CBS’s Guiding Light before
becoming the Senior Producer at Grinker & Company in NYC where
he oversaw the production of non-fiction programming for A&E and
PBS. In 2000, Feld became the Director of Field Production for Martha
Stewart Living. Feld moved to Nashville in 2002 to become CMT’s
Director of Programming. Feld is now the Director of Programming and
Development for Scripps Networks Interactive where he develops and
supervises programming for HGTV and DIY Network.
DR. EARL J. HESS earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in History from
Southeast Missouri State University and his Ph.D. in American Studies
from Purdue University. Dr. Hess is the Associate Professor of History at
Lincoln Memorial University. As a leading scholar on Civil War history,
Dr. Hess has published nearly twenty books plus over 100 book reviews.
Publications include The Knoxville Campaign—Burnside and Longstreet
in East Tennessee, University of Tennessee Press, 2012.
JOAN L. MARKEL was born in Boston, raised in New Hampshire and
after earning a PhD in Anthropology/Archaeology, she came to Knoxville
in 1990 to begin her ‘Southern’ experience. In 1995 she created the
Outreach Program for the McClung Museum of Natural History and
Culture at the University of Tennessee. Joan is actively involved with
the East Tennessee Civil War Alliance, Tennessee Civil War Preservation
Association, Knoxville Civil War Roundtable, and the Knox Area Civil War
Sesquicentennial Commission.
BILL LARSEN is a distinguished lecturer in the Department of English at the University of
Tennessee where he teaches film studies and script writing. He received his Ph.D. from UT
and previously taught high school English in New York.
In recognition and commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the U.S. Civil War, the
2013 Knoxville Film Festival presents The Battle Cry of Freedom Student Filmmaking
Competition. This film competition is open to currently-enrolled college and high school
students. The competition will have two divisions: college and high school. The subject
matter of the films must focus on the human issues and events, both political and
personal, created during The Civil War in the United States 1861 – 1865. The films can be
no longer than 20 minutes and no shorter than five minutes. The film’s presentation can
be either documentary or original narrative in style.

ADVISORY BOARD
CAROL EVANS Carol brings over 20 years experience in marketing, public
relations and event management to the leadership position of the Legacy
Parks Foundation. She has led marketing initiatives for Scripps Networks,
Knoxville Area Chamber Partnership, Dogwood Arts Festival, multiple
corporate clients and the UT Lady Vols. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in
Communications from the University of Georgia and a Masters of Science in
Education from the University of Tennessee.
CYLK COZART Cylk Cozart is a native Knoxvillian who left Tennessee with
dreams of becoming a professional basketball player. When a injury cut short
his promising NBA career, Cylk focused his attention on modeling and acting.
His early acting credits include Spike Lee’s School Daze and The Fresh Prince of
Bel-Air. He is most recognized for White Men Can’t Jump, Conspiracy Theory,
16 Blocks, Eraser, and Stephen Spielberg’s Eagle Eye. Along with acting, Cylk
is an award-winning producer and director and in 2012 was presented the
Lifetime Achievement Award by Martin Luther King, III and Academy Award
winner Lou Gossett, Jr.
DEE HASLAM Dee Bagwell Haslam is Executive Producer and Chief
Executive Officer of the RIVR Media companies. She has headed the RIVR
Media team in the production of eighty series and twelve documentaries.
In addition Dee, along with Rob Lundgren, founded Rivr Media Interactive
which in 2010 launched Moving Picture Books, an award winning line of
animated children’s books. In June of 2012, She started Nest Features, an
independent film company that produces films in and about the American
South. Before her current position, she worked in various production roles
with Bagwell Communications.
JONATHAN DOUGLAS Jonathan Douglas has worked for Regal Cinemas for
over eighteen years. For the last eight, he has been the primary coordinator
for hundreds of film festivals hosted by Regal theatres around the country.
He currently oversees the marketing for Regal’s Cinema Art program
which includes over 60 theatres nation-wide that play alternative film on
a year-round basis. In this capacity, he works directly with independent
film distributors on marketing for their films and publishes the Film Guide
Magazine. Prior to coming to Knoxville, Jonathan was a theatre manager for
Regal for almost a decade.
DENA PINSKER From 2002 - 2010 Dena Pinsker was executive director of
Variety the Children’s Charity of Eastern Tennessee. During her tenure she
worked with the Variety Board of Directors and Regal Entertainment Group
on nine movie screening benefits which raised millions of dollars for East
Tennessee special needs children. In 2003 Cuba Gooding, Jr. attended the
screening of Radio beginning a long tradition of talent highlighting sold out
prerelease screenings. Before joining Variety of Eastern Tennessee, Dena
worked for Variety of Colorado. Presently she serves on three Knoxville non-
profit boards. Dena lives with her husband, Neal, and their two cats. Their
daughter, Jordan, lives in Denver, Colorado.

LARSEN JAY Larsen Jay is the President of Dogwood Entertainment
and Emmy Award winner with experience as a director, producer, writer,
production coordinator, executive producer and script consultant. His
credits include over 100 commercials, documentaries, professional video
productions, more than 200 hours of cable programming, and feature films
such as Universal Soldier: The Return, Duets, Madison, Big Fat Liar, Erin
Brockovich and That Evening Sun.
STEVE DEAN Stephen Dean served as Community Relations and
Promotions Director at WBIR-TV, the Gannett-owned NBC affiliate
in Knoxville, Tennessee for 30 years. While at WBIR he is credited with
creating The Heartland Series and served as the program’s Executive
Producer of for 20 years. After leaving WBIR-TV in 2005, Dean formed his
own production company called Famfive Productions, Inc. Steve is married
and has three children and three grandchildren.
