Dmitry Schigel and Virve Viertiö of the University of Helsinki studied the arrival of wood-decaying fungi to spruce trees in Finland carried by the bark beetle Ips typographus. They collected bark beetles using pheromone traps at two sites from May to October and analyzed the fungi present on the beetles and in air samples using DNA sequencing. Preliminary results identified tens of fungal species present on every beetle and air sample. The study aims to understand which fungal species will form wood decay communities in spruce trees over time.
