7. The Digestive System
The Digestive System is a group of
organs that works together to
transform food into forms that cells in
the body can absorb to provide
energy for its various functions and to
nourish and build new cells.
12. MOUTH
Part of the digestive
system that receives
food.
Helps in the
MECHANICAL and
CHEMICAL DIGESTION.
13. PHARYNX
Also known as THROAT
lined with mucus
membrane involved in
passing chewed food
from the mouth to the
esophagus.
It contains EPIGLOTTIS
which prevent food from
going down the trachea.
14. ESOPHAGUS
Is a muscular tube that
connects the pharynx and
the stomach. This organ
receives masses of chewed
food from the mouth through
the pharynx and passes it to
the stomach in series of
muscular contractions and
relaxation known as
PERISTALSIS.
15. STOMACH
Is a muscular sac-like
organ located between
esophagus and the
small intestine. It
secretes Hydrochloric
acid (HCl) and digestive
enzymes which help
break down food into
soluble substance.
16. SMALL
INTESTINE
Is a long and narrow
tube about 7 meters
(23 feet) long in
adults, located in the
abdomen. It continues
the process of
digestion with the
action of the enzymes
secreted by bile and
pancreas.
18. 3 Sections of
Small Intestine:
DUODENUM-digestion
of food materials
JEJUNUM and ILEUM-
adsorption of nutrients
into the bloodstream
19. LARGE
INTESTINE
Also known as COLON
Located in the lower
abdomen of the body
which is about 1.5 meters
(5 feet) in length and 3
inches in diameter.
It absorbs water from the
undigested food from the
small intestine.
21. RECTUM AND
ANUS
The rectum is the end
section of the large
intestine before reaching
the anus. The anus is the
opening at the lower end
of the gastrointestinal
tract that controls the
expulsion of feces.
25. TEETH
These are small,
white, hard organs
located along the
anterior and lateral
sides of the mouth
These organs are
used for cutting
and grinding food
into smaller pieces.
27. TONGUE
The tongue is a
smaller organ located
at the lower portion of
the mouth.
It is covered with
mucus membrane-
moist, thin skin layer
of skin.
PAPILLAE- Taste buds
35. PANCREAS
It is a large glandular
organ located deep in the
abdomen behind the
stomach connected to the
duodenum through a tube
known as the PANCREATIC
DUCT.
CHYME- a mixture of partly
digested food and
stomach acid.
37. LIVER
Is a large reddish-brown
organ located at the upper
right-hand area of the
abdominal cavity, below the
diaphragm, above the
stomach, right kidney, and
intestines.
EMULSIFICATION- process of
breaking down droplets of fat
into smaller ones.
40. GALLBLADDE
R
It is a small pear-
shaped organ located
under the liver. It
stores bile produced
by the liver. During
digestion it secretes
bile into the small
intestine through the
BILE DUCT.
