In this presentation discuses about what is seed testing and what are the objective and important , what are the different types of quality assessment test .

4. Introduction
Seed testing is determining the standards of a seed , physical purity , moisture ,
germination and thereby enabling the farming community to get quality seeds
Testing of seed evaluate the planting value and the authenticity of the certified lot.
Seed testing is required to assess the seed quality attributes of the seed lots which
have to be offered for sale.
5. OBJECTIVE OF SEED TESTING
Their sustainability for planting.
To identify seed quality problems and their probable causes.
To determine if seed meets established quality standards or labeling specifications.
Establish quality and provide a basis for price and consumer discrimination among lots in the market.
To determine the need for drying and processing and specific procedures that should be used.
6. Quality assessment test
Seed moisture test
seed germination test
seed viability test
physical purity test
seed vigor test
seed health test
grow out test
7. Seed moisture test
To determine the moisture content of seed by methods suitable for routine use
The moisture content of seed sample is the loss in weight when it is dried in accordance
with 1STA rules.
seed content 30 % moisture
8. Seed germination test
Field planting value of seed lot
compare the value of different seed lots
% Of seed that produce healthy root & shoot
Temp. Range 18-22֯֯ C
varies from 7-25 day
cereals 7 days
G % = X 100
Total no of seed germinated
Total no of seed planted
9. Seed viability test
the percentage of viable seed which may be expected to germinated
2,3,5- triphenyl tetrazolium chloride or bromide
V%= X 100
method
No. of half seed stained red
Total no. of half seed
10. Physical purity test
The percentage of seed belonging to the variety under citification
Seed sample from seed lot as
I. weed seed
II. other crop seed
III. Inert matter
purity % = X 100
Weight of pure seed
Total weight of working sample
11. Seed vigor test
Vigorous seed grow at faster rate tan poor seed under favorable environment .
In seed vigor test three main point
I. cont. The no of seedlings emerging on the earth day.
II. Fine the germination % of each seed lot .
III. Find out the average seedling length in mm for each seed lot .
G. I.= ∑
N
d
12. Seed health test
Seed lot which show presence or absence of seed borne pathogen on the surface of seed
Blotter method is used
5, 10,25 seed can be taken on blotting paper layer
% of health seed = % G.- ( % PR -% PO)
13. Grow out test
periodic genetic purity test by grow out test is must for seed production
Grow out test is to make sure that they are be maintain in true from
Compulsory for
manual hybrids
Parental lines
14. Role of Seed Testing Laboratories
Organization in seed certification and seed quality control programmers.
Serve the producer, the consumer and the seed industry by providing information on seed quality.
Rejection of seed lots or further multiplication or low grade seed in a count of law
