Verticals & 5G Evolution:
mmWave Communications for Automotive and Immersive
Experiences

5G & Verticals
 Many of today’s societal challenges can be addressed through vertical solutions:
– Aging population’s health care needs
– Smart traffic routing for connected cars, pollution monitoring in our cities
– Energy usage optimisation in offices and homes
– Enhanced media & entertainment (M&E) experience
 Such massive connectivity (50Bn devices by 2020), needs an architecture supporting ultra
low latency, high bandwidth platforms.

mmWave Communications for 5G
 5G services will require Gbps data rates and
will consume Exa Bytes of data per month.
 Also there will be much tighter requirements
on latency, service reliability etc., which can
be supported by wider bandwidths.
 However, the sub-6GHz spectrum is already heavily utilized.
 The mm-wave spectrum (denoted as 6-100GHz) offers much wider
bandwidths for mobile services, albeit to use in a co-primary basis.

5G/mmWave at the Service of Verticals
 High bandwidth for automotive infotainment applications
 Immersive applications needing Gbps data rates (like UHD video)
 Virtual reality/Gaming applications needing very high data rates and
ultra low latencies
 IoT applications needing massive connectivity and ultra low latency.
 Mission critical applications (industry automation, connected cars
etc.) needing ultra high reliability and low latencies
 Most of these applications can benefit from mm-wave
communications:
– Utilize the wider bandwidths for provision of higher data rate, lower latency and higher
reliability KPIs.
– The IoT sensors and nodes are mostly in close proximity, within range for mm-wave
– The high path loss in fact makes higher spatial re-use possible.

Automotive & 5G/mmWave
 Extreme throughput, low latency, and enhanced reliability of 5G will
allow vehicles to share rich, real-time data, supporting fully
autonomous driving experience
– By sharing raw sensor data, it becomes possible to implement adaptive platooning
or even cloud-driven, fully automated driving (if processing can be done in an edge
cloud to have acceptable latency)
– Joint implementation of mmWave radar and communication systems possible
 ‘Potential applications for 63-64 GHz band’: currently an agenda item
in ETSI ITS WG1 (Applications and services) in preparation to Release
2 of the standard
 Samsung’s involvement in automotive
– Harman International Industries acquisition
– Products/Prototypes:

 The entertainment will be driven to a new
level by the virtual reality experiences:
– Sports fans will get immersive experience
from their favourite players’ view points.
– Tourists can immerse themselves to select
their destinations, interact with landmarks, etc.
 Their will be other immersive applications beyond entertainment:
– Doctors will be able to carry out remote surgery’s with real time, immersive vision.
– Robots can be guided to carry out hazardous tasks (eg: nuclear incident) by remote controllers with
real time, immersive vision and sense from robots.
 Mm-wave communications at the RAN are ideally poised to support such
immersive experiences:
– The wider bandwidths can provide extreme data rates and ultra low latencies.
– Higher path loss enables higher spatial re-use in dense crowds (like in a stadium).
– SRUK & Samsung HQ heavily involved in 5G verticals enabled by mmWave
M&E: The 5G Immersive Experience

5G-PPP: mmMAGIC & mmMAGIC-II
 Research on mmWave within 5G has been championed in Europe by Samsung UK with
flagship 5GPPP projects, paving the ground for deployments by 2020 or before
 mmMAGIC (5GPPP Phase 1)
– Main objective is to develop and design new concepts for mobile radio access technology (RAT) for
deployment in the 6-100 GHz range including architectural enablers, waveform, frame structure and
numerology, beam-forming and tracking techniques.
– €8M; 19 partners including Samsung, Orange, Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Telefonica, etc.
 Coordination of mmMAGIC-II (submitted for 5GPPP Phase 2)
– Continuation of mmMAGIC with a special focus on verticals and PoCs
– If granted, would run during 7/17 – 6/19
– 18 partners
