Exploring the Self and the Uncontrollable, Neurological Urge to Write
Author uses experience with rare mental condition to create poetry that unites the past self with
the present
EMERSON COLLEGE, BOSTON – Hypergraphia (n.): A condition associated with mania,
depression, and bipolar disorder, where the affected feels the uncontrollable urge to write
Brenna Kleiman suffered from Hypergraphia herself in middle school, often coming into school
covered in ink. Now, in this collection of mostly-autobiographical poems, the author links the
condition to her relationships with herself, her family, and others in her life. Filled with themes
of heartbreak, confusion, mythology, and the bitter-sweetness of growing up, Hypergraphia
somehow manages to find hope between lines of uncertainty, images of lonely parties, and Cape
Cod vacations.
In her debut $5.00 poetry collection (all proceeds will go to charity), to be release by Wilde Press
on December 9, 2014, Kleiman has created a work in which she recognizes not only the
uncertainties of moving into young adulthood, but reconciling them with the challenges we must
overcome growing up. All the while, her relationship to writing itself stands out as a link
between all other parts of her life. Anyone who has ever felt like they don’t know where they’re
going, or are not quite sure where they’ve been, will likely find a kindred spirit in Hypergraphia.
Brenna Kleiman is a second-semester senior at Emerson College, graduating this December with
a BFA in Writing, Literature, and Publishing. While this is her first published collection, she has
been published in anthologies such as East Coast Ink and Concrete Literary Magazine.
