14. Facts about Mithila Art and Culture Development Trust
MithilaArt and Culture Development Trust,
Tilak Chowk, Ward No-6,
Madhubani Bihar, India
This NGO is famous in Madhubani Art and crafts. It was formed in 1998, pioneered by Shri Kamlesh Roy
who dedicated his artistic knowledge of Mithilanchal for promoting the Madhubani painting under the
guidance of Shri. Lakshmi Devi who is a state award winner and highly specialized in the art form. They
played a vital role in promoting the art by teaching the painting techniques to the students from different
communities. The NGO supports the beginners for the preliminary learning of the Madhubani painting.
13
15. Mithilanchal is situated in the Northern zone of Bihar. In the Madhubani district the popular art form is
Madhubani painting among all the artisans. The Madhubani painting constitutes
the ritualistic art form comprising of different motifs inspired from nature. It is used in marriage ceremonials,
festivals,Aripan, Cohbar, Sindhora, shagun etc.
GEOGRAPHICAL PLACES

16. This art was popular all over the India since 1974. During that time Mithanlanchal was enduring heavy flood which
generated unemployment among rural people. The ritual art form which were done on the walls was known as
"Bhitti Chitra" which were considered as blessing and generated employment. During the tour by Mr. Richard
WGArcher, who visited Madhubani and asked the people to paint an elaborated form of Madhubani. He provided
them with the handmade sheet on which the Madhubani painting were done through nib by using the natural
colors. Mr. Richard carried the art samples with him to various places and provided a platform for the traditional art
all over the world. In this way the art form got a wider coverage. They starting using this painting on the clothes,

SOME FACTS ABOUT MADHUBANI PAINTINGS

17. REVIEW OF LITERATURE
For promoting this art form the Government should take some initiative steps to promote. It is very sad to know that
our country lacks conservation place like a proper museum for showcasing this art form which is famous
worldwide. Contradictorily, Japan has shown a keen interest in Madhubani paintings. The initiatives of Tokyo,
Hasegawa, who setup the Mithila museum in Tokamachi, where around 850 Madhubani painters exhibit on the

19. During ours product development process, the most common problem faced by the artisans were the lack of
regular orders. Hence the artisans hesitated to take risk for mass production and they are reluctant to
experiment elaborate art form on different kinds of product. To benefit in the global market, the artisans
needed financial motivation which is lacking among them. The artisans were unaware of different process
through which they could set up their own business. For example, they were unaware of the loan facility
from the banks for establishing a new business. Due to lack of knowledge and awareness they tend to be
deprived of many government projects such as ....................................

21. Overview of our product developed
We have choosen the product like Helmet, Hair Straighter, Toothbrush, Wrist Watch, Bottles
,Bangles, Bags ,Hats, Belt, Jewellery, Jutti, Dhup daani, Paag (regional hat), Suup on which
the enamel paints were used . Firstly, we coated the surface with enamel paints for two to three
times. Left it for drying and then we applied the Madhubani motifs on all these products. There are
different kinds of motifs in Madhubani paintings likes Katchni, Bharni,Tantrie,Godhna,Nepali etc...
images of the Lotus plant. The Bamboo, Groove, Fishes, Birds and Snakes in union. These images
represent fertility and proliferation of life. We also choose the silk fabrics for the garments like
Puncho, Ladies Kurti, Gym Vest,T-Shirt, Koti, Wrap-a- rounds, Stoles, Scarves, Burkha, Jeans.
Following were the methods
Firstly, the designs are sketched with thin outline using black acrylic fabric color and doubled linings.
Then filling up of the blank spaces with black color to thicken the lines, is done which is traditionally
known as the Kutchni work. Then, some basic colors like Red, Yellow, Green, Blue were applied
with the help of nib, twigs and brushes on the fabrics. The motifs contain intricate lines which is quite
a tedious and time taking job.
