Introduction:
No doubt, snakes are the deadliest, venomous creatures but they are one of
the most beautiful creations of mother nature. It plays a great role in
Ecosystem. As like other wild creatures, their existence too is indeed
important to maintain nature's ecological balance. Snakes never attack
humans willingly else they get aggressive only when are hurt or disturbed
without warning. It's their natural wild instinct of self-defense that force any
venomous snake to strike. In fact, as much as we fear snakes, they too fear
humans and other bigger species.
Classification:
Snakes are classified in two types-
1.Venomous
2. Nonvenomous.
They can also be classified as
1.Sea snake and
2.land snake.
It is a matter of joy that the top most venomous snake is not land snake.
Top most venomous snakes:
The top most venomous snake is
Belcher's Sea Snake . It is a docile specie
and not aggressive at all. It is usually
active at night. It usually bites fishermen
handling nets. Few milligrams (mg) of
Belcheri's myotoxic venom is enough to
kill an estimate of more than 1000
people. If Belcheri injects, sure death
within few seconds.
Most venomous snake in land:
The most venomous snake in land is Inland
Tipan. Maximum yield recorded from a single
bite of Inland Taipan delivered venoum is 110
mg. Just few mg of Inland Taipan's venom is
enough to kill over 100 people or 250,000
mice. Many people believe Taipans are very
aggressive but the fact is that they are docile
creatures. Taipans are found in Australia and
New Guinea.
Top most dead listed snake:
The Black Mamba is the largest of the species
of snakes. It mouth has a black internal lining.
Thus named Black Mamba. Most feared toxic
snake Black Mamba is the world's No.6
venomous snake. Black Mamba is highly toxic
and notoriously aggressive.
Black Mamba is the fastest land snake in the
world, reaching top speeds of 16-19 km/hr in
short bursts.
Snake's Distribution : Black Mambas are found
in African savannas and open woodlands. The
mortality rate ranges from 75 to 100 per cent.
King cobra:
Famous Giant King cobra is the world's
No.4 venomous snake. King Cobra is
the largest venomous snake. It’s food
habit differs it from other snakes. It
hunts other snakes as food. King Cobras
can inject more milligrams (mg) of
venom than any other snake. Its venom
is a powerful neurotoxin. Without
prompt medical aid, death is certain for
its victims.1 mg of this venom can kill
80 people. The maximum record of
injecting venom is 117mg.
Snakes in Bangladesh:
 Total nos. of snake species 98
 Total nos. of venomous snake species 32
 Total nos. of non-venomous snake species 66
 Total nos. of threatened snake species(IUCN 2000) 28
Venomous snake in Bangladesh:
 Common krait (Kal-keutey) EN
 Monocellate cobra (Gokhra) EN
 Spectacled cobra (Khoia gokhra)EN
 King cobra (Padmagokhra)EN
 Banded krait (Shankhini shap)EN
 Russell’s viper (Chandro-bora) CR
 Green pit viper (Sabuj bora) EN
 Spot-tailed pit viper (Tila-leji sabuj bora) EN
Snakes in CUET campus:
In CUET campus I have found snakes in almost nine spacies. They are-
 Common krait (Kal-keutey)
 Monocellate cobra (Gokhra) EN
 Binocellate/Spectacled cobra (Khoia gokhra) EN
 Banded krait (Shankhini shap) EN
 Russell’s viper (Chandro-bora) CR
 Reticulated Python CR
 Daras Sap
 Lau Doga Sap
 Foni Monosha Sap
This is a Monocellate cobra was found in
Bangabandhu Hall. This is a venomous type snake.
This snake was Almost 5
feet long. This type cobras
deliver significant amounts
of deadly Neurotoxic venom
resulting in necrosis and
respiratory collapse. Fast
acting venom can result in
human fatality in as little as
30-60 minutes from time of
bitten
This is also venomous typesThis is a Russel’s viper. It is a critically
endangered spacies in Bangladesh.
Russell’s Viper can kill
150 people with one
bite and its mortality
range ranges from 40
to 92 per cent.
Russell’s viper is found
in Asia and is
considered as the third
most dangerous snake
of Asia.
This type of snake is called Daras sap which is non venomous creature.
This is called Lau Doga Sap. This is also a non venomous creature.
This is a Reticulated Python which is critically endangered spacies in
Bangladesh. This type of python is not dangerous because of their small size but it
is 7th dead listed snake.
This is multi banded Krait was found in Dr. Q.K. Hall
Multibanded Krait is the
world's No.8 venomous
snake. mortality rate is from
70 to 80 percent. The
maximum deaths of common
krait per bite is 60.
This snake is called Foni Monosha Sap. It is a
nonvenomous creature.
Role of Snakes:
1.Snakes play an important role for maintaining balance in Ecosystem.
2.Venom is used for medical research.
3.Skin of snake can be exported.
Conclusion:
Snakes are one wonderful creature of mother nature. In our campus the
students live in a deadly environment. So I suggest to the authority to take
proper security for students and also for the snakes.
Thanks All
