IHR Digital History Seminar - 10 November 2015 History has not been kind to Victorian jokes. While the great works of nineteenth-century art and literature have been preserved and celebrated by successive generations, even the period’s most popular gags have largely been forgotten. In the popular imagination, the Victorians have long been regarded as terminally humourless; a straitlaced society who, in the words of their queen, were famously “not amused” And yet, millions of jokes were written during the nineteenth century. They were printed in books and newspapers, performed in theatres and music halls, and re-told in pubs, offices, taxicabs, schoolrooms and kitchens throughout the land. Like many other forms of ephemeral popular culture, the majority of these jokes were never recorded and have now been forgotten. But all is not lost. Millions of puns, gags, and comic sketches have been preserved – often by accident – in archives of nineteenth-century print culture. Some appear in dedicated joke books and comic periodicals, but most have survived as stowaways in the margins of other texts. They are scattered throughout thousands of Victorian books, newspapers, magazines, and periodicals. While some were organised into clearly demarcated collections, others were used more haphazardly as column fillers or sprinkled randomly among other tit-bits of news and entertainment. Until recently, the only way to locate these scattered fragments amidst the ‘vast terra incognita’ of Victorian print culture was to identify a promising host-text and then browse through it manually. The digitisation of Victorian print culture has opened up new possibilities for this kind of research. However, as this talk will argue, the structure of digital archives means that jokes are still buried among millions of pages of other content. In order to make these, and other marginalised texts, more visible, we need to rethink the organisation of our digital collections and open up their contents to creative forms of archival ‘remixing’. In 2014, Bob Nicholson (Edge Hill University) teamed up with the British Library Labs on a project that aims to find and revive thousands of forgotten Victorian jokes. Their ‘Victorian Meme Machine’ automatically converts old jokes into images and posts them on social media using a ‘Mechanical Comedian’ (@VictorianHumour). In this presentation, Bob will report on the progress of the project and outline his plans for a new transcription platform designed around the principles of ‘meaningful gamifaction’.

Traditional documentation of jotting down observations and analog documentation have their limitations though. It is time to change the notion and the way we document. Participants will look at tools and techniques, ranging from video and audio recordings to image capturing, screencasting and reflective, hyperlinked documentation that support modern skills and literacies. We will also go beyond text based, disconnected and random documentation to formalize a documentation process that serves several layers deep.

Virtual reality (VR) has exploded on the consumer market over the last few years. There’s a rapidly rising interest in how to use this emerging technology for learning and performance. With VR now one of the industry buzzwords, how much is hype and how much is substance? I have the pleasure of exploring this question in a talk I'm asked to give titled "What's Really Happening with Virtual Reality?". During the discussion, we explore the current state of virtual reality and look at examples of virtual reality in practice in both the consumer and enterprise markets. We look at what’s working—and what’s not—and how to apply those lessons to learning and development.

There’s fast-growing interest in the usage of AR and VR for education and training. According to SuperData Research, investments in AR and VR technologies will grow from $1.6 billion in 2017 to over $3.1 billion in 2020. Much of that investment is being funneled towards projects built with education and training in mind. AR and VR are emerging quickly, but what does it mean for today’s learning organizations? This post includes the slides and resources shared during a talk examining the current and future opportunities posed by augmented and virtual reality. Using recent research from The eLearning Guild, this talk examines how organizations are using these technologies today and how they intend to use these technologies tomorrow.

In the context of talent development, ecosystems also exist in the workplace. Understanding the structure and dependencies of an organizational ecosystem can help you build a better talent development strategy. These slides were used during a session exploring the expanded scope of a learning and performance ecosystem, examining the numerous components that contribute to talent development. Attendees learn how these individual components can be combined into a single cohesive strategy, and leave with a new perspective on how to view talent development in their organization and the role learning professionals play in supporting it. The world of the learning and performance professional is changing. The business world is moving ever faster, and no longer has the ability to wait weeks for training to be developed every time a learning and performance need arises. Organizations are increasingly placing value on performance support programs that give workers access to exactly what they need, where they need it, at the moment they need it. But performance support can be a daunting shift for learning professionals, often leaving them lost with no idea how to get started. These slides are used in a talk and/or workshop in which you will explore how organizations can start with small pilot programs to begin adding performance support to their organizational learning strategy. You will discuss examples of performance support being implemented in small ways, and hear how those small starts had large impacts. You will explore the mindset that learning professionals need to develop to truly shift towards performance support.
