2. Dave Clark Bio:
Dave is a native of Corning, New York, who now lives in Cape Coral,
Florida, with his wife, Camilla, their daughter, Elica, and son Trey.
As an infant, Dave contracted polio that stunted his growth and left
him without the full use of his legs. But despite that, and perhaps
because of it, he was driven to excel in physical competition against

The Dave Clark story is likely the greatest "mostly unknown"
professional sports account of our time and teaches unforgettable
life lessons that gives hope to anyone facing a challenge whether
large or small.

5. Doug J. Cornfield Sr.
Manager, Dave Clark Baseball
Dear Doug:
We recently held our annual Miracle Special Needs Baseball Camp here at Hammond
Stadium, and I wanted to share with you some thoughts about Dave Clark, and all that he has
done for us to help us bring this event to the SW Florida community.
I first met Dave in 2005, and it was at that Jme that we began to speak about the possibility
of having our players and coaches take part in a Special Needs Camp here at Hammond
Stadium. The thought was iniJally a bit overwhelming since we had not done something like
this before. Dave helped us put together a plan that was easy to implement, and he gave us
some great suggesJons on how to make the experience fun for the kids and their families.
When we reached the day of the camp, I asked Dave to meet with our players and coaches, to
share his story, his love for baseball, his Jme playing the game, and how he was able to
successfully face the challenges that he had in his life. Our players were completely in awe of
Dave’s story. Many of them came up to me aOerwards, and between Dave’s message, and the
experience of being a part of the camp that day, they indicated it was a day they would
remember forever.
Each year since, for six years now, we have held a Special Needs Camp here at Hammond
Stadium. It is by far and away the best event we do. There is no beQer feeling than knowing
that we can give the opportunity to these kids and their families to come out to the ballpark
and spend a morning with our team, and the end result is that they had a great Jme and were
able to put their cares and worries aside. We have Dave Clark to thank for that.
We are proud of our associaJon with Dave, and with Dave Clark Baseball. We look forward to
many more years of helping to create special moments and memories for so many families
here in SW Florida. We are truly blessed to have Dave Clark in our lives. He is a great
inspiraJon to all of us.
Sincerely,

6. Book Summary
Diamond in the Rough
D v Cl r St ry
Imagine being 5-foot-2 and playing professional baseball. And not just
playing, but also managing, coaching, scouting, owning a professional
barnstorming team that toured the country, and traveling Europe as a
representative of Major League Baseball.
Now imagine doing it all on crutches.
That’s the incredible and inspiring tale at the heart of Diamond in the
Rough: The Dave Clark Story, written by sportswriter Roger Neumann,
as told by Dave Clark.
This is so much more than a
baseball story, though. And
so much more than a sports
book, although Dave also has
played hockey and golf and
other physical games – again,
all while using crutches to
get around.
As an infant in Corning, New
York, Dave contracted polio
that stunted his growth
and left him without the
full use of his legs. But
despite that, and perhaps
because of it, he was
driven to excel in physi-
cal competition against
so-called able-bodied
people. He married, had
a daughter, moved his
family to Florida and is currently a scout
for the Baltimore Orioles. Along the way, he nearly got “the
call” to the major leagues as a pitcher.
