Imagine what you want audience to know
And that will enhance your creativity!
Editor's Notes
Every speaker dreams of his presentation to be successful, engaging, interesting, however not everyone is able to do it that way from the scratch. Sometimes
once’s best intentions of putting more information and make it way too serious ends up like in the first picture on this slide. People are losing track of your speech
And presentation, can’t wait it to finish and cant even hide how bored and disappointed they are.
In order for this thing not to happen – there are few very useful rules, which I am going to tell show you in this presentations, that can help to make your presentation sparkling!
The best way to approach your audience is to try to interact with all of their 5 senses, since this is how they going to perceive what you saying and showing.
Seeing is one of the most important senses while approaching the audience and everything you have in your slides is perceived by your listeners.
You should structure and design your slides in the way that your audience is engaged by the picture they see and one of the main rules for that is:
NEVER USE FULL TEXT on your slides – no one wants to read it and its even worse if you read it yourself (going to discuss on next slides), if you know the
Idea of your presentation you and your listeners will only benefit from minimum information on it in terms of text, because they will be more motivated to listen to you.
Same with right font chosen and right color – as you can see this pink color is not very much readable on this blue background. And again – the more visual representation you have- the better. Graphs as helping you to show the comparison or change which is easier to perceive on visual basis than on numbers. Pictures help to create metaphors and comparisons, or associations and that helps people to remember your presentation better. And off course interesting videos (especially with someone famous and professional in this particular industry) will help to catch attention of the audience and give them many-sided opinion.
What is important to remember as well is that your presentation should be appropriate in terms of its style and the format of the event. You wouldn’t make it only pictures and colors if you show it to elder audience with a lot of scientific experience. Though, in case it’s more of a creative profession like marketing, pr or designing – you would make it less formal and more fun.
Light in the auditorium is also very much important. The line between making it too private and too light, which is hurting the image and takes attention from the presentation itself is very thin. Think about it beforehand.
Don’t forget about the way you look yourself as well. You should fit the format of your presentation: either its formal suit and classic hairstyle or its colorful hippy outfit that makes you look creative and entertaining for the audience.
As well as your appearance its important how you present to the people: take care of your body language and keep the eye contact with the audience – that way they know that you talk to each one of them rather than to yourself and you are interested and passionate about the topic so much that you just cant keep calm.
Hearing is next most important sense while presenting: first of all you should remember that you are not just reading a slide or delivering the information like a news presenter – you are telling a story and you have something to emphasize. For example, in order to bring your own experience in you can incorporate a story or a real-life case while presenting and that can help people to relate this story to the story of their lives as well.
You want people to participate and expect the answer – make them answering your questions, not just philosophical, but those very basic, though still relating to the audience, just try and you will see that they will be more interesting if they see you are interested in their opinion. Everyone likes to think that he matters a lot.
The more you are interested yourself – the more people are interested in it – passionate speakers can engage almost everyone.
Don’t talk monotonous, that makes people falling asleep.
However it’s important not to talk too fast, some people may lose you and miss important information. As the pauses between notes makes you a good musician – same makes you a good speaker and orator if you know how to keep the pauses.
Sometimes when you are nervous – your voice goes up – you don’t want this.
Any additional music and sound, especially those that people can relate to make them more engaged and interested. Make a right choice of them.
What is least expected but creates most amusement is not only hearing and seeing the product (for example) but also touching it! Its great when you can try it and actually see what’s the presentation about.
For example, some of business people I met – I still remember them because I remember their business cards – they were made of some unusual materials that it was the first thing I realized when I made an acquaintance with them.
As well with hand outs and different brochures you may give to people while presenting – they will remember they were good quality, that adds weight to you in terms of authority and company level.
About the gifts it may be an interesting point in terms of the following aspects: first of all, people just love getting presents and that it not doubtful. Second, you probably have mentioned that many people love to have some pens or pencils in their hands while talking on the phone or listening to something, thus they can take notes on the one hand and also play with these things on the other. If you give them something to play with – they are more likely to stay longer.
Finally, I am not encouraging you to – but if your presentation allows it – try to make more physical contact unless your audience doesn’t like it. If you have a musical background or just want to shake a hand – don’t hesitate, people like encouraging and active speakers – invite someone for a dance.
You how some people react on smell and if they don’t like it – it is very much so that they will be trying to leave asap. However, there are some smells that are encouraging people to stay in the place, just make some research before you prepare your presentation. Just as hint – I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like the smell of fresh pastries, even if someone is on the diet and not allowed to eat them.
Still then you can bring them in and regale your audience, especially if you are aware of the size or number of participants. Any other refreshment such as fresh juice or even bottle of water will only be an advantage for your presentation.
Here’s my story, for example:
Overall, you should just keep in mind these things: the real key story is always in your head and you are telling people everything you know, the presentation is just a tool to make it easier and more interesting, it is not intended to show the text that you are reading, so even if you forget something – don’t stress up – in your presentation you can always take a lead.
It’s not obligatory that you use only power point. Sometimes it is much more creative when you can immediately take advantage of the pencil or marker board in the auditorium and show what you meant. Handouts prepared in advance also a great help out if presentation is full of information. Videos and audios may show either something you have recorded before in some other place or as an interviews with some other people or just reflect some authorities’ opinions. Excel files are really better if it’s of vital importance for you to show the numbers and the change on them, graphs are also built much easier in excel.
When you know the topic and you know what you want to say – let you creativity go forward and invent something new for you basic on what you want to deliver to your audience.
