Points to Client about NAAT: “ The NAAT test is able to let us know if you got HIV from someone you recently had sex with. What this test does it is picking up changes in your body’s cells. These changes in your body’s cells happen about 1 to 2 weeks after you are infected with HIV and is called the “Acute” period. Explanation of Acute Period: “ The Acute period means that the HIV Virus is making lots of new HIV viruses in your body’s cells. These new HIV viruses cause changes in your body’s cells. The changes in your body’s cells can be picked up on the NAAT test.”
Early detection is when the virus is reproducing Quite often the person does not know they are infected During the acute phase a person my only have few signs/symptoms: Fever, sore throat, headache, skin rash and swollen glands
Client Education Summary: Increase HIV education and importance of early and frequent testing. If you have sex without a condom or engage in some kind of risky sex get tested. Condom whenever you engage in any type of sex (oral, vaginal, or anal) Limit your number of sex partners Know more about your partners past and present (Their past and present may effect your future) Ask questions to find out if your partner(s) is using drug, exchange sex for money/drugs have multiple partners etc.. Reduce risky behavior Multiple partners
Staff Education: Ensure that your clinical and prevention staff know the very basis “Acute” HIV and are able to relate the information to a client based on the clients level Detected by the changes in the RNA in a person body NAAT is the only test at this time to identify “Acute” HIV - HIV at it’s earliest detection time The Acute phase last on an average 54 - 62 days What does the NAAT result mean: It means HIV has been detected in your body During the “Acute” phase the virus is reproducing rapidly in the body. The patients viral load is at its’ highest. Ideal time to enroll patient in services and for first medical evaluation in order to reduce the spread of the virus.
Once the positive lab is processed and the Program Manager/NAAT Coordinator (PM/NAAT Coor) receives the confidential email informing them of the results then the PM/NAAT Coor can access cyber lab to retrieve the client specific information.
Nurse Coordinator will assess the patients’ medical record for possible history and reason for testing. Nurse Coordinator will record search STD*MIS and coordinate activities with FLS to ensure all abnormal labs are appropriately addressed. Abnormal labs are placed in patient’s medical record.
Latent/Chronic HIV patient is defined by the presents of antibodies
Prioritizing Appointments: Within 72 hours of laboratory notification the labs are record searched and field record initiated to the Senior Service Linkage Worker/designate for field follow-up and notification. They will ensure that the client has all the necessary identification, copy of results, proof residence and income verification.
Senior Service Linkage Worker ensure that the NAAT positive client is enrolled in follow up care and receives their first medical examination within 1 week of enrollment. Chronic HIV patient first medical examination can take up to 30 days.
