Social Self.pptx

  1. 1. Objective:  Verbalize understandings of the world and themselves from a social interaction and how this understandings shape their subsequent social interactions.  Demonstrate critical and reflective thought in analyzing the development of one’s self and identity by developing a theory of the self.
  2. 2. Content  Looking Glass-Self Theory  I-Me Theory  Self-concept, self-image, self-identity, and generalized other
  3. 3. Definition of Terms:  Generalized other according to Mead, is a person’s internalized conception of the expectations and attitudes held by society (Kornblum, 2012).  Self-concept, the totality of our beliefs and feelings about ourselves (Kendall, 2012)
  4. 4.  Self-image is the conceptualization we form in our minds about the kind of person we are based in large measure on what we’ve learned from our environment, such as what other people have told us about ourselves and how they appeared to respond to us (Simon, 2014).  Self-identity, an internalized psychic system that integrates an individual’s inner self and the outer social world into a congruent whole (Psychology, 2018).
  5. 5. “Selfie” Instructions: 1. Take a picture of yourself. Silently view your own picture. 2. Find a partner and exchange selfie photos. 3. Silently view your partner’s digital picture. 4. Answer the questions listed on the table.
  6. 6. A. When you take your selfie. How do you see yourself? B. When you exchange photos, imagine how: ….you appear to that person? ….that person thinks about you based on how you think you appear to him/her. ….how that person feels about us, based on the judgments made of us. C. How do you see yourself after reflecting on what you think others see, think and feel about you?
  7. 7. “Looking-Glass Self” the reflection of our self that we think we see in the behaviors of others around us - Charles Cooley
  8. 8. According to Cooley, this process has three steps: 1. We imagine how our personality and appearance will look to other people. 2. We imagine how other people judge the appearance and personality that we think we present. 3. We develop self-concept.
  9. 9. “I AM WHAT I THINK YOU THINK I AM” - CH Cooley
  10. 10. “Selfie 2” Instructions: 1. Have students take out their phones, iPads, or laptops to take a picture of themselves. 2. The Teacher will ask them a series of (admittedly obvious) questions: “Who is that a picture of? “Who took the picture? “So, what did you just do?”
  11. 11. 3. Tell the class, “Now choose someone else in the room, exchange cellphones with them, and ask them for their password.”
  12. 12. Process Questions: At this point, reiterate the questions and answers on #2: “Who is that a picture of? Intended response: “Me!” “Who took the picture? Intended response: “I did!” “So, what did you just do?” Intended response: “I took a picture of myself!”
  13. 13.  What was your immediate reaction when you were told to exchange cellphone and password?  How did you deal with the conflict, if there was any?
  14. 14.  Mead (1934) divided the self into the “I” and the “me”. The “I” is the subjective element of the self and represents the spontaneous and unique traits of each person. The “me” is the objective element of the self, which is composed of the internalized attitudes and demands of other members of society and the individual’s awareness of those demands.
