Dear Sir/Madam,
As I near the end of my biomedical science degree at Sheffield Hallam University, I find myself
intrigued by the study of genetics and proteins and future applications that the development
of science gives in these areas, both from the diagnostic and new treatments that these
advancements can give. My academic journey so far has fuelled my interest for understanding
the molecular mechanisms that underpin biological processes. I believe that pursuing a
master’s degree in human and molecular genetics is the perfect next step in my academic and
professional development. Therefor I am greatly excited to be applying for this course.
During my time at Sheffield Hallam, I have been able to learn a great amount about genetics,
picking applied biochemistry as my optional module allowed me to study many methods that
have been used in human genetics, such as CRISPR as well as methods used in protein
determination and mapping. I also studied histone methylation and other forms of genetic
modification.
The university gave me the opportunity to complete a sandwich year, which I did completing
my placement at Diana, Princess of Wales hospital pathology laboratory. Here I worked within
a large team of staff across the laboratory, working in several positions across the lab to gain
experience in multiple positions, mainly these where in the biochemistry and haematology
department.
Given the esteemed faculty and state of the art facilities available at your institution I would
love the opportunity to complete a masters at your institution. I am particularly excited about
the opportunity to collaborate with the leading experts in the field and contribute to the
ground breaking research in genetics.
In summary, my strong academic background in biomedical science, combined with a passion
for genetics, linked with my experience in a working laboratory makes me an ideal candidate
for your master’s program. I eagerly anticipate the chance to further expand my knowledge
and skills and ultimately contribute to the advancement of this fascinating field.
