3. WHAT IS
CAUSE MARKETING AND WHERE DOES
SOCIAL MEDIA FIT IN?
Background
Social media marketing is a great way to bring
about positive change and attract attention to
valuable social causes.
Cause marketing is a type of marketing or
advertising that focuses on social issues, such as
equality or diversity. It’s designed to raise
attention around a specific topic.
When coupled together, social media and cause
marketing = social media for social good.

4. FOR ALL OF THE PITFALLS OF SOCIAL MEDIA, THE PROBLEM ISN’T IN THE
DEVICE. IT CAN BE USED FOR BAD, AND IT CAN ALSO BE USED FOR GOOD.
The Human
Connection
We’re a technology obsessed society.
Americans spend 4.7 hours a day on their
phones, which is one-third of the time we
are awake.

How We
Connect
Social media platform
preferences vary from one
country to another. However,
Facebook remains the world’s
most widely used social media
platform, but there are now six
social media platforms that
claim more than one billion
monthly active users each. Four
of these six platforms are owned
by Facebook.

wrenching pictures of those who
need help, and other content meant
to inspire.
SHARE STORIES
Let your followers, as well as the
public, know what your organization
is doing for a social cause via a
strategic campaign.
DEVELOP A CAMPAIGN
Not all the content you create has
to be yours. The voice of a
supporter can speak louder than
your own.

How to
effectively use
social media for
good?
When issues need attention and
causes need support, social media
cause marketing is the best way to
reach a mass amount of people.
9. Cause
Marketing
Social Media
Campaigns
The most compelling cause
marketing campaigns are
rooted in creating tangible
impact. They clearly link to
an outcome that makes the
world better, even if the
individual action involved is
quite small and discrete.
Dove published a video that showed how long it takes
for women to get ready. The goal? To help spread
awareness of the fact that our perception of “beauty”
is distorted, and help women with their self-esteem.

Gillette’s old slogan was “the best a man can get."
Gillette changed their slogan to "The Best Men Can Be"
to support the #MeToo movement, which aims to
combat sexual assault and harassment and prevent
this sort of behavior from happening in the future.

The 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge had people pour a
bucket of ice cold water over their heads, and
nominate their friends to do the same. The goal? To
raise awareness of ALS—a neurodegenerative disease
that affects nerve cells in the brain. It worked.
