Barcelona is the capital city of the Catalonia autono-
mous region, one of the most prosperous of Spain.
Enclaved in the Mediterranean Sea,with a population
of 4.770180 million of inhabitants,it extract its riches
from the powerful industry which house it and from
its strong position in the touristic map of Europe. The
last statistics point out that ,during 2005, the city was
the host of five millions tourists a 11%increasing with
regard to the anterior year.
The Barcelona nationals, as well as the whole Catalo-
nia, possess their own language, the Catalon, which is
used at the same time with the Castilian, the official
language of the whole state. The laws of the commu-
nity demand the bilinguism in all the public and priva-
te establishments, on the labels and tickets as well as
in the forms documents and menu cards in restaurant
pubs and café.
The city has seriously proposed for itself the theme of
living in. As a result, the official inversion reffering to
transport and mobility increased (the excellent condi-
tions went from creating unity in collective transport,
streets, governamental buildings till recreative places,
in order to facilitate the accessibility of the disabled).
They also designated means for the improvement of
the cleanliness, the areas appointed for pets, green
areas, signposts, sensitive campaigns against the noi-
se and of the old furniture left in the street, primary
medical attention, aids for the third age.
The constant flux of visitors from the Iberic Peninsula
of Europe and other continents decisively modified the
social and cultural features of the city and of the in-
habitants, as compared with other urban places of the
Mediterrranean Sea which don’t possess identical indi-
ces of reception reffering to businessmen and tourists
from everywhere, and its consecuent influence in the
daily life.
Identical signification in the sociocultiral structure has
the considerable migratory wave which arrived to set
here in the last years. There are more than 120 distincti-
ve nationalities,in a gret number being the immigrants
coming from Morocco, Romania, China, Peru, Ecuador,
Colombia, Argentina.
We can summarize in the present report four areas of
etnourban investigation which depict the particulari-
ties of Barcelona in the Mediterranean scenary, looking
for those aspects and signs which are interesting and
distinctive, as well as the regularities shared with the
other cities in the region:
1. Culturalheritageandactivities
2. Entertainment and shows
3. Commercial activities and
entrepreneurial activities.
4. Private and public sphere
in relation with the Family.

Cultural heritage
and activities
K nown as the city of modernism, Barcelona pos-
sesses a rich architectonic which makes to meet
in the same space different historical epochs which go
from the ruins of Roman settles passing to the gothic
district and the magnificent temple of Santa Maria
del Mar01 to the construction structures which crown
more recent periods.
The most remarkable architect is undoubtedly Anto-
ni Gaudi I Cornet (1852-1926). Author of fundamental
pieces which confer the city a more lordly an distinc-
tive air, he goes amazing by the riches of his exciting
and inimitable style. Examples which crown his work,
from the domestic edification to the religious one are
the Batllo House02
(1905)and still the never-ending Sa-
grada Familia03
(1882). The former serves for creative
exercice which links up elements from nature with the
environment of the Passeig de Gracia. The great and
rich visual moving in forms confers a magic touch of
the monumental façade of this house.

The Sagrada Family temple is one of the most de-
lirious proof of the world art. Coceived in all like a
block of the Eixample from Barcelona it goes round
four streets, possesses giant magnitudes towards the
flanks and above like a tribute of Gothic style. It has
got a dramatism which tries to strengthen the faith
and to cause full amazement to the one who looks at
it. Visible from everywhere it exposes the verticality
of its towers near to several arms of crane which re-
mind us about an endless dream.
As a city in a continual urbanistic development Bar-
celona goes on drawing its skyline with low better
structures. It added to the traditional buildings such
as The Triumph Arch04
, conceived by Josep Vilaseca
i Casanovas, serving as the entrance in the Universal
Exhibition in 1888, other pieces which enrich the pro-
perty inheritance. Moreover beginning with the axle
which share in two the city’s history:the Olimpic Ga-
mes in 1992. In this epoch bring forth contemporary
projects such as Hotel Ars05
,tower of 45 floors concei-
ved by Bruce Graham.
Later on there appears with challenging distinc-
tion the Abgar Tower06
(waters of Barcelona),
the work of a French architect Jean Nouvel, which
stand out for its steel verticality. Althought
much more inferior we have also the Nexus 107
building being from among the first possessing
integral intelligence and automatical systems of
management ,designed by Lluis Nadal i Oller, the
mirror circumference which covers its five floors
for the northern countryside of the Catalonia Po-
litecnic University, in epochal contrast with the
seats ,for example the University of Barcelona or
the Library of the Pompeu Fabra University.
The city goes on standing out with an intense
cultural proposal in the field of visual arts. The
most interesting programs focus on the most
ancient museums and on the newest exhibition
centres. The enclosure campuses we should em-
phasize here are the Barcelona Contemporary
Culture Center08
with an integral architecto-
nic structure of the past century and the fresh

Museum of Contemporary Arts09
(MACBA), one of the
most interesting scenes for the purity of its façade and
for the total and formal austerity with witch its interior
halls stand in for. The two institutions are highly exi-
gent with their invited artists and are the head of the
avant-garde projects.
According to their importance the next would be the
Virreina Palace10
, placed in the very heart of the Boule-
vards, into a Renaissance Age building which ,on visi-
ting it, it was exhibiting two superposed things:pictures
with Patagonia and an ambitious artistic essay about the
posterior stage phase at the falling of the Berlin Wall.
In the same zone one of the nucleus of the most well
known communal culture is the Santa Monica Arts Cen-
ter11
with several installations of video-arts, drawings,
designs.

Other recommendations for the public who looks
for plastic, are the Fundations. In the front of the
Catalonia Square we meet one of the most inter-
esting and daring things: El Espai Cultural de Caja

, with different projects, workshops, li-
terary circles, game rooms. The commissioners of
this Fundation took the responsibility to string its
program across of a coherent series of publicatio-
ns.

A good part of the areas of the historic center and of di-
fferent exits at the peripheral small towns, appears sie-
ved from the spontaneous strokes of the sprays anxious
works which express the youthful voices of their exe-
cutants. As wild demonstrations are also those already
classical living sculptures, the puppeteers, portraitists
who proliferate in the alleys of the emerged neighbor-
hood, all these being enjoyed by a bullring of curious
people.
Within the Catalonian cultural industry the publishing
may be the most significant.Barcelona lodges the main
publishing houses of all Latin America. It is the citadel
of all writers and of all books. So it is not by chance
the fact that the main holiday of Barcelona is the 23-
th of April ,The Saint Jordi’s Day, the main hero of a
beautiful legend with princess, dragons and flowers.
This day commemorated by everyone brings together
a multitude of people among book-stands and bunches
of roses. The tradition demands that a beautiful woman
should be offered a flower, gestyre which means that
she would correspond of a book.
City of permanent summons, of strong cultural agenda,
Barcelona is the place of multiple presentations. One of
them, which was recorded here was the lunch of the
black novel The Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xialong
(Shangai,1953) published by the Almuzara house. For the
press conference, celebrated in a Chinese restaurant in a
high zone of Barcelona, the editor woman Nicole Canto,
appeared in a red dress and the make-up on her face

Entertainment
and shows
An average inhabitant of Barcelona focuses his free time
on several activities such as the walking along squares
or parks, sports hobbies the beach in springtime or in
summer cinema and theatres going at restaurants and
the nocturnal recreation. The family finds reunion mo-
mentswiyh iys members paying attention to the children
especially, in the Zoo, the Aquarium, Imax Screens and
the thematic places.Barcelona is a city for the walking
man.
The youth, as an entity which enjoys a lot the plen-
ty of leisure, are used to make the city a complex
space where to develop their activities and to overflow
their energy. Each time they come in organized groups
within the culture of skate. Square University and the
surroundings of the open spaces in the District of Ravel
are true platforms for skating and prove the techni-
ques and the abilities of this modality of urban sport.
This practice changed in one of the main attraction for
the under age European groups of tourists.

The young people who work and get already their own
wages spend their money on clothes and accessories an
don social reunion beginning with Thursday’s nights.
Barcelona, as well as the whole Spain, enjoys the privi-
lege of the major nocturnal recreative activity on the
Mediterranean region and all over the continent. The
pubs and locales destined for dancing start receiving
their customers in the evening and ,if needed, the spa-
ces keep open til the morning.
Going out in week-ends at night in Barcelona allows
the possibility to see a permanent stream of people. In
a country where the the supper is predicted later than
the accustomed hour in all the other nations the arrival
of the diversion expands.

The cinema is a one favorite hobby’s of the Catalonian
family. Pain enjoys an excellent challenging cinema
with the roughest themes of political and social reality
regarding the couples or family. The multiple prizes
for international competition make the national film-
makers to enjoy a good welcome from the public whi-
ch is informed enough about the seventh art.
Catalonia produces its own movie, but the idiomatic
reason (the movies here are in Catalonian) limits very
much its distribution and exhibition in other parts. Ne-
verthless, the Government of the Generality, which is
the main governmental organ of the four Catalonian
provinces-Barcelona, Girona, Lleida y Tarragona-de-
signated important financial resources to support the
audiovisual Catalonian industry as a part of a linguistic
expansion campaign. TV3 the biggest television house
of Catalonia has got one of the most important pro-
duction systems in the whole Europe. One example
was the Oscar nomination, followed by the full-length
film Balseros, about the existential conflict of those
Cubans who immigrated illegally in U.S.A.
Barcelona possesses a good number of cinema circuits
and an abundant and distinct entertainment daily gui-
de. The most of the halls belong to multiplex groups,
of American style, placed in the main malls of the city.
The emblematic case is provided by the two Verdi08
movies in the neighborhood of Gracia which turned
into real cultural temples, with the most alternative
programs.

Anyway someone from Barcelona, zealous for his cul-
ture must be a fan of football. The last match played
by the insignia team, el Barca gets a resounding and
crushing success. The matches hold in the place of this
selection the Camp Nou09
Stadium brings to a stands-
till all the hitch-hikers and fills all the streets of the
city with commotion, once the fans throw themselves
out of the enclosure in order to celebrate the victory.
It was unleashed the “barca fever’’: thematical shops
in the malls, T-shirts with the colours of the uniforms,
souvenirs of all kind.

Commercial and
entrepreneurial
activities
They always said that people in Catalonia are salesmen.
A solid commercial vocation is responsible for the rea-
son why Barcelona and the whole community would be
known within and out of Spain for its excellent produc-
tion of cava, wines, chesses, hams, fashion, design. It is
a place where whatever company project may be started
and extended.
F rom the high area of the postindustrial and emer-
ged districts, as a natural process the new Barce-
lona moved in the centers of commercial interest. In
the places which had belong to the most weak inha-
bitants, economically speaking, have been established
the most interesting businesses.
The areas considered as the coolest are today the
Born an area which was in full decay of streets and
properties, and the Raval ancient Chinese district which
sheltered the immigrants from Assia the prostitution
pubs as well as some deteriorated food establishments.
The charm of these two new poles, attractive for the
commercials, inhabitants and tourists surely lies in its
oldness in its narrow streets, in its ancient and still un-
repaired buildings. Here one may feel one of the most
interesting example in the fashion field, food, design
and body-care beauty.

Fashion
Commercial and entrepreneurial activities 27Barcelona Report 2006
The fashion design has got in this Mediterranean city
on of its main quarry. From the proliferation of fas-
hion institutes, for a quarter of century, there must
be added the events in Barcelona as a host, the Pa-
sarela Gaudi being the main of them. Which is being
now in a redesign stage,as an event. Moreover, there
is the interest for the city abroad,in all the areas, so
we have the German group producing Bread & Bu-
tter who made of Berlin and Barcelona two unique
permanent places of the world movie fair.
There are also important fashion brands, such as:
Custo, Armand Basi, Tous, Loewe. The young desig-
ners have the possibility to enjoy the high interest
for Barcelona, as an obsessive point of commerce and
fashion, and they may lunch with their collections in
brand shops or in their own boutiques.
Among the most interesting Catalonian creators
arises the name of Frederic Homs01
, who created a
company with the same name which stand out for
its quality, the experimentation of different ma-
terials a fresh design and a graphism which serves
not only for the corporative identity of the mark,
and logo, but also for advertising sheets. Its point
of sales being in the very heart of the Born leaded
to an effective slogan: ”a new and exciting Frede-
ric Homs store is born’’.
In the same district we meet the only shop Re-
think02
, a project started in Buenos Aires concei-
ved by his promoters in this unique establishment
out of Argentina with the ’’audiowear” purpose
in order that there may be designed clothes from,
for and with the help of music. Shirts, trousers and
accessories wear elements which pay homage for
figures and important events of the sound and the
mythical bands at reasonable prices, and for shop-
pings of a great originality in its conception or in
the engraving.
Near here there is the Iguapop Gallery03
, the shop
which sales emerged designer clothing for fashion
street, beside the shelves with books and works
of art. With two big halls Iguapop Gallery receives
projects from young artists who meet here an al-
ternative space. From the main entrance they exhi-
bit some of the De Mano04
mark articles, young Ca-
talonian company working in the confection field
who sales bags made of materials beginning from
recycled poliuretan posters which fills the city’s
streets announcing municipal campaigns or shows
and exhibitions.

At the other pole, there is the Raval district, where
we meet a familiar shop Despitarte05
. Working in
the own shirt production, it has got great scales
of colours and engravings which can be confectio-
ned according to the whim of the one who buys
it. They go from the political allusion to the social
irony, from the comic or the icons of different epo-
chs till the traffic signals. It is all a mindedness ar-
senal whose insructions labels are given like those
one in a fotostory series.
At the moment Spain has got two of the most un-
common establishments settled in the Raval dis-
trict. One is the Casa Camper06
, which is a hotel
of design with the house Vincon, which knows to
combine the solemnity of the darkness with the
comfort of the new generation, having high reso-
lution upholstered and extraplan plasma screen
walls. Several bikes hangs from the entrance ceiling
being at the disposition of the guests who want to
pedal along the city and within there is a selfservi-
ce dinningroom where the guests may choose for
nothing everything of the food and drink in the
big buffet. In the left corner there is the Foodball07
where one can eat from the sandwiches to icecrea-
ms. Within the Camper politic there is associated
the tradition of the holy shoe with the homemade
kitchen. The handmade work shares a slipper with
a sandwich.

The design occupies an important place in the dyna-
mic of the city and at commercial level too.The Spa-
nish people, as well as those in Barcelona are pleased
to be surrounded by design. In a great number are
the establishments which sale gadgets, toys, articles
of design in general. We may summarize here the
most important collected projects.
The Born Market08
is a young shop arisen face to face
with the ancient enclosure with the same name. It is
a cooperative of artists, designers, musicians and cul-
tural promoters having a two level space, exclusively
dedicated to materials related to design: books, ob-
jects, posters, sculpture, T-shirts. It has got too its
own exhibition hall with talented young people who
can sale their work in the shop, once the exhibition
is closed.
Recdi809
is a small dimensioned establishment which
is undoubtedly completely full of interesting things
for a design collector: lamps of different materials,
uncommon clocks, outlandish but seductive souve-
nirs. This mark has got another locale, much more
spacious, but dedicated only to furniture. Under the
‘be amazing’motto it is one of the most visited cor-
ners in the Born district.

At the first number of the Tallers alley, which links up
Las Ramblas with El Raval, there is one of the prefe-
rred places of an avant-garde object consumer, called
Trustnobody10
. It became specialized in skate clo-
thing, sneakers art and design. We meet here things
beginning with surf boards, atractive engravings, to
the latest iconical figures of the cinema world collec-
tion copies. Decorated with natural simple structures,
minimal areas and built-in-mirrors plasma screens
make that the passing through that entrance to be
obligatorily.
Another project to be emphasized here is the Spa-
nish company Kukuxumusu11
conceived by the imagi-
nation of the Basque designer Mikel Umeneta, from
the stange word which in Basque language means
‘flea kiss’. The philosophy of the mark which expe-
rimented an important increase in the whole Spain,
is to combine the conceptions of the images printed
in multiple supports with the own fabrication and
sale. They also call it the Drawing Factory, its product
being school-bags, mugs, toys, cards T-shirts, towels,
socks, tablecloths, pencils.

Beauty
-Body
The care ,the worship of a creative personality, the
desire of being different, are tendencies which
in the latest years involve anywhere in the world
both women, men adults an young people.Bar-
celona receives, in this field, as various proposals
as interesting which go from the body care to the
mind hygiene.
La Pelu12 is a chain of hairdr esser’s places, situated
in the busiest area of the city. Through an ironical
communication they obtained from the mark a di-
plomatic value, associating it with retro messages,
which involves the music and the cinema. LTW13
is another small enterprising group, but dealing
with tattoo and piercing. The shops have got at
the entrance a shop window for sealing different
accessories, then is the office entrance where they
realize the body work with extremely caution and
professionality. In order to contract its services the-
re is a large list of waiting people around a table.
The Natura group14 offers in its shops, articles
of exotic and original gift. In order to make the
people who enter to return to their shop, they use
aroma, music and lights. We meet there decora-
tion articles, household items, stationary, books,
bathing products, garments, all with the purpose
of offering an oriental well-being concept. Every
year Natura summons to a Prize the best ecological
and of humanitarian character projects.

Another different atmosphere, but within the same
scale is the on of Alquimia15, a recent mark under
motto “Tradition, Feminity, Ecology and Humani-
zed Economy”. Its promoters recover the inheritan-
ce of the ancient Spanish school of fragrance, aro-
matherapy, cosmetics and alchemy offering them
to a modern woman. With spaces where there is
created a warm invitation to relaxation with lights
and a perfect harmony of furniture and attested
sideboards of products of own production.
In this field of leisure and care with comfortable
occasions it was the small business who prolife-
rated the cannabis culture. One of the flashiest is
Exp.14916 with two headquarters and which offers
to those interested in this consumer implements,
cultivation systems, seads, aliments and drinking
containing cannabis among its ingredients (sweets,
pastas, gins, beers). Moreover it combines the offer
of its articles with a funny decoration with the do-
uble meaning of this hobby.
And finally, Excellence17, a novel project in the
middle of Las Ramblas of Catalonia focused on es-
teem, personal mind and the mind training. Here
they sale books of all these themes and conffectio-
nate a ranking with the best business texts. There
they schedule conferences and workshops mon-
thly and edit a periodic publication bearing the
same name. They sale T-shirts, puzzles posters and
articles with messages that invite to a more heal-
thy life and to make a fully use of intelligence.

there is a food shop, sauces and seasoning used in di-
fferent recipes which have been recovered by their
owners.
There is a real tendency for creating spaces which
combine the pattern course with the light diet.In this
type of projects we have the Sandwich & Friends19
mark which grew in number of shops having as main
attractive point not only the numerous proposals in

consolidated as a mark before the most exigent con-

Private and public
sphere in relation
with the family
The family as a nucleus of personas experimented in
Barcelona important changes in the last time. There
are not extended familial groups yet. The young enter-
prising movements of the small towns and countryside
near Barcelona dismembered the classical house whe-
re various generations coexisted. According to the 2005
statistics there are more and more houses with one ,two
or three inhabitants or there are those who form a group
of four or more members.
Mediterranean Observatory40 Private and public sphere in relation with the family
We chose for this report five families, each of
them having a different composition which
permit us appreciate the changes experimented at so-
cio-familial level.
The Alfama family is made up of seven members:the
parents who are the first generation, living in a com-
munity of those out of Barcelona and the two daug-
hters each of them married. Of the two one is mother
of a child waiting for another one. Both of them live
in their own flat. They only have a family reunion in
weekends in one of the houses.
Barcelona Report 2006
The family composed by Rene & Isabel with their son
Flavio. He is an architect and she is an actress. They
live in the center of the city and share the obligations
as parents. They would out to walk in weekends and
enjoy the holidays which bring their friends together
in their house. They live in a rented flat.

Sandra is married and has got a baby. Both she
and her husband are emploees at the Generality.
They have their own flat in the Gracia district.Afri-
ca, Sandra’s sister is unmarried. She also lives with
a friend in a rented flat. She would share her wee-
kends visiting both her sister and her mother and her
granparents.

The Colome family is made up by grandmother, her
son and daughter-in-law and two grand-children.
They live out of the city sharing a big house. The la-
test generation is made up of professionals. The sons
still students share the time for making their own de-
sign projects. This third generation frequently trave-
led to Barcelona for this is the place where they can
relate with young that have the same interest and
formation and here is the place with the recreative
cultural options that satisfy their cultural necessities.
Private and public sphere in relation with the family 43
Mediterranean Observatory44 Private and public sphere in relation with the family
And finally, Ana and her adopted daughter Sarita.
With every passing time we may notify at statistic level
this family format. Many middle class women, singles
and without children would adopt children of poor
countries. Two years ago, Ana, an English teacher in
the official school asked for the adoption of a kat-
mandu child, Kingdom of Nepale. After many travels
and formalities, she successfully obtained Sarita, of
six years old. Currently, the girl talks to her mother in
Castilian and English, although she knows better her
mother language (nepali) and the Catalonian because
this is the language thought to her in Barcelona. The
celebration of her anniversary day was registered in
the Report where there assisted numerous friends of
Ana from different parts of Spain, Europe, America, of
whom some also adopted children.

  • 6. Intro- duction Barcelona is the capital city of the Catalonia autono- mous region, one of the most prosperous of Spain. Enclaved in the Mediterranean Sea,with a population of 4.770180 million of inhabitants,it extract its riches from the powerful industry which house it and from its strong position in the touristic map of Europe. The last statistics point out that ,during 2005, the city was the host of five millions tourists a 11%increasing with regard to the anterior year. The Barcelona nationals, as well as the whole Catalo- nia, possess their own language, the Catalon, which is used at the same time with the Castilian, the official language of the whole state. The laws of the commu- nity demand the bilinguism in all the public and priva- te establishments, on the labels and tickets as well as in the forms documents and menu cards in restaurant pubs and café. The city has seriously proposed for itself the theme of living in. As a result, the official inversion reffering to transport and mobility increased (the excellent condi- tions went from creating unity in collective transport, streets, governamental buildings till recreative places, in order to facilitate the accessibility of the disabled). They also designated means for the improvement of the cleanliness, the areas appointed for pets, green areas, signposts, sensitive campaigns against the noi- se and of the old furniture left in the street, primary medical attention, aids for the third age.
  • 7. The constant flux of visitors from the Iberic Peninsula of Europe and other continents decisively modified the social and cultural features of the city and of the in- habitants, as compared with other urban places of the Mediterrranean Sea which don’t possess identical indi- ces of reception reffering to businessmen and tourists from everywhere, and its consecuent influence in the daily life. Identical signification in the sociocultiral structure has the considerable migratory wave which arrived to set here in the last years. There are more than 120 distincti- ve nationalities,in a gret number being the immigrants coming from Morocco, Romania, China, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina. We can summarize in the present report four areas of etnourban investigation which depict the particulari- ties of Barcelona in the Mediterranean scenary, looking for those aspects and signs which are interesting and distinctive, as well as the regularities shared with the other cities in the region: 1. Culturalheritageandactivities 2. Entertainment and shows 3. Commercial activities and entrepreneurial activities. 4. Private and public sphere in relation with the Family.

  • 10. K nown as the city of modernism, Barcelona pos- sesses a rich architectonic which makes to meet in the same space different historical epochs which go from the ruins of Roman settles passing to the gothic district and the magnificent temple of Santa Maria del Mar01 to the construction structures which crown more recent periods. The most remarkable architect is undoubtedly Anto- ni Gaudi I Cornet (1852-1926). Author of fundamental pieces which confer the city a more lordly an distinc- tive air, he goes amazing by the riches of his exciting and inimitable style. Examples which crown his work, from the domestic edification to the religious one are the Batllo House02 (1905)and still the never-ending Sa- grada Familia03 (1882). The former serves for creative exercice which links up elements from nature with the environment of the Passeig de Gracia. The great and rich visual moving in forms confers a magic touch of the monumental façade of this house. 01 Santa Maria del Mar 02 Batlló House Mediterranean Observatory10 Cultural heritage and activities
  • 11. 04 Triunph Arch 05 Hotel Ars 03 Sagrada Família Cultural heritage and activities 11Barcelona Report 2006 The Sagrada Family temple is one of the most de- lirious proof of the world art. Coceived in all like a block of the Eixample from Barcelona it goes round four streets, possesses giant magnitudes towards the flanks and above like a tribute of Gothic style. It has got a dramatism which tries to strengthen the faith and to cause full amazement to the one who looks at it. Visible from everywhere it exposes the verticality of its towers near to several arms of crane which re- mind us about an endless dream. As a city in a continual urbanistic development Bar- celona goes on drawing its skyline with low better structures. It added to the traditional buildings such as The Triumph Arch04 , conceived by Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas, serving as the entrance in the Universal Exhibition in 1888, other pieces which enrich the pro- perty inheritance. Moreover beginning with the axle which share in two the city’s history:the Olimpic Ga- mes in 1992. In this epoch bring forth contemporary projects such as Hotel Ars05 ,tower of 45 floors concei- ved by Bruce Graham.
  • 12. Later on there appears with challenging distinc- tion the Abgar Tower06 (waters of Barcelona), the work of a French architect Jean Nouvel, which stand out for its steel verticality. Althought much more inferior we have also the Nexus 107 building being from among the first possessing integral intelligence and automatical systems of management ,designed by Lluis Nadal i Oller, the mirror circumference which covers its five floors for the northern countryside of the Catalonia Po- litecnic University, in epochal contrast with the seats ,for example the University of Barcelona or the Library of the Pompeu Fabra University. The city goes on standing out with an intense cultural proposal in the field of visual arts. The most interesting programs focus on the most ancient museums and on the newest exhibition centres. The enclosure campuses we should em- phasize here are the Barcelona Contemporary Culture Center08 with an integral architecto- nic structure of the past century and the fresh 06 Agbar Tower Mediterranean Observatory12 Cultural heritage and activities
  • 13. hint of the new rational blocks, glass cutlery and the Museum of Contemporary Arts09 (MACBA), one of the most interesting scenes for the purity of its façade and for the total and formal austerity with witch its interior halls stand in for. The two institutions are highly exi- gent with their invited artists and are the head of the avant-garde projects. According to their importance the next would be the Virreina Palace10 , placed in the very heart of the Boule- vards, into a Renaissance Age building which ,on visi- ting it, it was exhibiting two superposed things:pictures with Patagonia and an ambitious artistic essay about the posterior stage phase at the falling of the Berlin Wall. In the same zone one of the nucleus of the most well known communal culture is the Santa Monica Arts Cen- ter11 with several installations of video-arts, drawings, designs. 07 Nexus 1 09 MACBA08 CCCB 10 Virreina Palace 11 Santa Monica Art Center 12 Espai Cultural Caja Madrid Cultural heritage and activities 13Barcelona Report 2006 Other recommendations for the public who looks for plastic, are the Fundations. In the front of the Catalonia Square we meet one of the most inter- esting and daring things: El Espai Cultural de Caja Madrid12 , with different projects, workshops, li- terary circles, game rooms. The commissioners of this Fundation took the responsibility to string its program across of a coherent series of publicatio- ns.

Cultural heritage and activities 15Barcelona Report 2006 A good part of the areas of the historic center and of di- fferent exits at the peripheral small towns, appears sie- ved from the spontaneous strokes of the sprays anxious works which express the youthful voices of their exe- cutants. As wild demonstrations are also those already classical living sculptures, the puppeteers, portraitists who proliferate in the alleys of the emerged neighbor- hood, all these being enjoyed by a bullring of curious people. Within the Catalonian cultural industry the publishing may be the most significant.Barcelona lodges the main publishing houses of all Latin America. It is the citadel of all writers and of all books. So it is not by chance the fact that the main holiday of Barcelona is the 23- th of April ,The Saint Jordi’s Day, the main hero of a beautiful legend with princess, dragons and flowers. This day commemorated by everyone brings together a multitude of people among book-stands and bunches of roses. The tradition demands that a beautiful woman should be offered a flower, gestyre which means that she would correspond of a book. City of permanent summons, of strong cultural agenda, Barcelona is the place of multiple presentations. One of them, which was recorded here was the lunch of the black novel The Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xialong (Shangai,1953) published by the Almuzara house. For the press conference, celebrated in a Chinese restaurant in a high zone of Barcelona, the editor woman Nicole Canto, appeared in a red dress and the make-up on her face

Entertainment and shows An average inhabitant of Barcelona focuses his free time on several activities such as the walking along squares or parks, sports hobbies the beach in springtime or in summer cinema and theatres going at restaurants and the nocturnal recreation. The family finds reunion mo- mentswiyh iys members paying attention to the children especially, in the Zoo, the Aquarium, Imax Screens and the thematic places.Barcelona is a city for the walking man.
  • 18. The youth, as an entity which enjoys a lot the plen- ty of leisure, are used to make the city a complex space where to develop their activities and to overflow their energy. Each time they come in organized groups within the culture of skate. Square University and the surroundings of the open spaces in the District of Ravel are true platforms for skating and prove the techni- ques and the abilities of this modality of urban sport. This practice changed in one of the main attraction for the under age European groups of tourists. Mediterranean Observatory18 Entertaiment and shows

Entertainment and shows 19Barcelona Report 2006 The young people who work and get already their own wages spend their money on clothes and accessories an don social reunion beginning with Thursday’s nights. Barcelona, as well as the whole Spain, enjoys the privi- lege of the major nocturnal recreative activity on the Mediterranean region and all over the continent. The pubs and locales destined for dancing start receiving their customers in the evening and ,if needed, the spa- ces keep open til the morning. Going out in week-ends at night in Barcelona allows the possibility to see a permanent stream of people. In a country where the the supper is predicted later than the accustomed hour in all the other nations the arrival of the diversion expands. • 22. Mediterranean Observatory22 Entertaiment and shows The cinema is a one favorite hobby’s of the Catalonian family. Pain enjoys an excellent challenging cinema with the roughest themes of political and social reality regarding the couples or family. The multiple prizes for international competition make the national film- makers to enjoy a good welcome from the public whi- ch is informed enough about the seventh art. Catalonia produces its own movie, but the idiomatic reason (the movies here are in Catalonian) limits very much its distribution and exhibition in other parts. Ne- verthless, the Government of the Generality, which is the main governmental organ of the four Catalonian provinces-Barcelona, Girona, Lleida y Tarragona-de- signated important financial resources to support the audiovisual Catalonian industry as a part of a linguistic expansion campaign. TV3 the biggest television house of Catalonia has got one of the most important pro- duction systems in the whole Europe. One example was the Oscar nomination, followed by the full-length film Balseros, about the existential conflict of those Cubans who immigrated illegally in U.S.A. Barcelona possesses a good number of cinema circuits and an abundant and distinct entertainment daily gui- de. The most of the halls belong to multiplex groups, of American style, placed in the main malls of the city. The emblematic case is provided by the two Verdi08 movies in the neighborhood of Gracia which turned into real cultural temples, with the most alternative programs. 08 Cinemes Verdi

  • 25. Commercial and entrepreneurial activities They always said that people in Catalonia are salesmen. A solid commercial vocation is responsible for the rea- son why Barcelona and the whole community would be known within and out of Spain for its excellent produc- tion of cava, wines, chesses, hams, fashion, design. It is a place where whatever company project may be started and extended.

F rom the high area of the postindustrial and emer- ged districts, as a natural process the new Barce- lona moved in the centers of commercial interest. In the places which had belong to the most weak inha- bitants, economically speaking, have been established the most interesting businesses. The areas considered as the coolest are today the Born an area which was in full decay of streets and properties, and the Raval ancient Chinese district which sheltered the immigrants from Assia the prostitution pubs as well as some deteriorated food establishments. The charm of these two new poles, attractive for the commercials, inhabitants and tourists surely lies in its oldness in its narrow streets, in its ancient and still un- repaired buildings. Here one may feel one of the most interesting example in the fashion field, food, design and body-care beauty. Mediterranean Observatory26 Commercial and entrepreneurial activities
  • 27. Fashion Commercial and entrepreneurial activities 27Barcelona Report 2006 The fashion design has got in this Mediterranean city on of its main quarry. From the proliferation of fas- hion institutes, for a quarter of century, there must be added the events in Barcelona as a host, the Pa- sarela Gaudi being the main of them. Which is being now in a redesign stage,as an event. Moreover, there is the interest for the city abroad,in all the areas, so we have the German group producing Bread & Bu- tter who made of Berlin and Barcelona two unique permanent places of the world movie fair. There are also important fashion brands, such as: Custo, Armand Basi, Tous, Loewe. The young desig- ners have the possibility to enjoy the high interest for Barcelona, as an obsessive point of commerce and fashion, and they may lunch with their collections in brand shops or in their own boutiques.
  • 28. Among the most interesting Catalonian creators arises the name of Frederic Homs01 , who created a company with the same name which stand out for its quality, the experimentation of different ma- terials a fresh design and a graphism which serves not only for the corporative identity of the mark, and logo, but also for advertising sheets. Its point of sales being in the very heart of the Born leaded to an effective slogan: ”a new and exciting Frede- ric Homs store is born’’. In the same district we meet the only shop Re- think02 , a project started in Buenos Aires concei- ved by his promoters in this unique establishment out of Argentina with the ’’audiowear” purpose in order that there may be designed clothes from, for and with the help of music. Shirts, trousers and accessories wear elements which pay homage for figures and important events of the sound and the mythical bands at reasonable prices, and for shop- pings of a great originality in its conception or in the engraving. Near here there is the Iguapop Gallery03 , the shop which sales emerged designer clothing for fashion street, beside the shelves with books and works of art. With two big halls Iguapop Gallery receives projects from young artists who meet here an al- ternative space. From the main entrance they exhi- bit some of the De Mano04 mark articles, young Ca- talonian company working in the confection field who sales bags made of materials beginning from recycled poliuretan posters which fills the city’s streets announcing municipal campaigns or shows and exhibitions. Working in the own shirt production, it has got great scales of colours and engravings which can be confectio- ned according to the whim of the one who buys it. They go from the political allusion to the social irony, from the comic or the icons of different epo- chs till the traffic signals. It is all a mindedness ar- senal whose insructions labels are given like those one in a fotostory series. At the moment Spain has got two of the most un- common establishments settled in the Raval dis- trict. One is the Casa Camper06 , which is a hotel of design with the house Vincon, which knows to combine the solemnity of the darkness with the comfort of the new generation, having high reso- lution upholstered and extraplan plasma screen walls. Several bikes hangs from the entrance ceiling being at the disposition of the guests who want to pedal along the city and within there is a selfservi- ce dinningroom where the guests may choose for nothing everything of the food and drink in the big buffet. • 30. Design Mediterranean Observatory30 Commercial and entrepreneurial activities The design occupies an important place in the dyna- mic of the city and at commercial level too.The Spa- nish people, as well as those in Barcelona are pleased to be surrounded by design. In a great number are the establishments which sale gadgets, toys, articles of design in general. We may summarize here the most important collected projects. The Born Market08 is a young shop arisen face to face with the ancient enclosure with the same name. It is a cooperative of artists, designers, musicians and cul- tural promoters having a two level space, exclusively dedicated to materials related to design: books, ob- jects, posters, sculpture, T-shirts. It has got too its own exhibition hall with talented young people who can sale their work in the shop, once the exhibition is closed. Recdi809 is a small dimensioned establishment which is undoubtedly completely full of interesting things for a design collector: lamps of different materials, uncommon clocks, outlandish but seductive souve- nirs. This mark has got another locale, much more spacious, but dedicated only to furniture. Under the ‘be amazing’motto it is one of the most visited cor- ners in the Born district. 08 Mercado del Born 09 Recdi8
