 18,000BC Cave paintings drawn on walls.
Historians believe that these images were made to
look like they were moving by the flickering shadows
cast on them from the fires.
 7,000BC In China, shadows of puppets are
projected onto parchment paper. This is developed
into an art form in eastern countries, particularly
India.
 2,000BC Greeks drew figures on vases in various
stages of movement
1800s
1824-'The persistence of vision with regard to moving objects' - Peter
Roget
1872- Phenakistoscope invented - produced an illusion of movement
1889- Kinetoscope invented by Thomas Edison- projected a 50ft length of
film in approximately 13 seconds.
1895- William Harbutt invented plasticine. This is used for model
animation - now made famous by Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run.
Also The Lumieres held their first private screening.
1896- George Melies, was the creator of special-effects films; he
discovered a technique by accident of stop motion films.
1660s- Magic lanterns were introduced
 1897- Arthur Melbourne-cooper produced an
animated advert for birds custard powder. It is one of
the first recorded uses for animated advertisement.
1900s1914- Windsor McCay, a pioneer animator produced the first proper
animated film for cinema entertainment called Gertie the Dinosaur (Silent
Movie)
1915- “Cel” or Cellulose acetate was developed. It is a transparent plastic
that enables drawings to be made in layers. It cuts down the amount of
drawing needed as drawings can be overlaid.
1920s- The Means for adding sound to film was invented.
1928- Disney’s Mickey Mouse made his first appearance as a character
called “Steamboat Willie”
1962- Willis O’Brien The man who created and animated the dinosaurs for
 1930’s- Colour was added to film. “Snow White” became the first full-length
animated feature in colour.
 The usage of rotoscope.
 1963- Ray Harryhausen may not be familiar to everyone but to those who do
know it, his name stands as a landmark in the history of a genre and cinematic art,
the art of three dimensional stop motion animation.
 1980’s- Tron was the first animated feature film made by a computer
 1990’s- Computers are commonly used in all levels of filmmaking.
Toy Story was the first full length all computer generated animated
film.
2000s
 2009- The Princess and the frog. Disney’s last
traditional animated movie.
