3. D4.1 Development of captioning and revoicing activities
1 Introduction
The Clipflair project aims at creating a library of resources containing over 300 activities for
all CEFR levels of 15 languages. Thanks to the design of the ClipFlair Gallery, the
information required for a typical lesson plan (level, age, time required to finish the activity,
instructions, aims, outcomes, etc.) are included in the metadata accompanying each
activity. Thus teachers who are interested in enriching their course programme with
innovative activities, or independent learners can easily find the activities that suit their
needs, and instantly know how to use them.
ClipFlair activities are available in the Gallery
Activity http://gallery.clipflair.net/activity where they can be browsed with the help of
the filters in the left panel
An ClipFlair activity is considered a learning object consisting at least of:
• a clip (audio or video)
• instructions
• captions or revoicing
It may also contain:
• other reference material (e.g. information about the clip)
• pre- or post-activity exercises etc.
• links to dictionaries etc.
For more on the definition of a ClipFlair activity, see D2.1 Conceptual Framework and
Pedagogical Methodology, pp.19-20.
Captioning activities include
• standard (interlingual) subtitling,
• same-language subtitling
• annotations
• intertitles.
Revoicing includes
• dubbing,
July 2014 Page | 3
4. D4.1 Development of captioning and revoicing activities
• voice-over,
• free commentary,
• karaoke,
• audio description
The 15 languages targeted are Arabic, Basque, Catalan, Chinese, English, Estonian,
Greek, Irish, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.
The Activity Metadata Form (see section 3), filled by authors, accompanies each activity
created and provides necessary metadata. The information required in the Template
includes title, author(s) keywords, aims, estimated time for completion of tasks,
language(s), suitability in relation to speakers of specific or any languages, CEFR level(s),
skills, AV skills, type of response required of learners, AV tasks, mode of feedback to
learners.
Activities consist of a number of components and include media files, instructions for the
completion of requested tasks, captioning and/or revoicing panels and any additional text,
image or media component deemed necessary by the author(s) (see screenshots in
Section 4). They are classified as:
• Intralingual: activities where the same language is both Source Language and Target
Language;
• Interlingual: activities where Source Language and Target Language are different;
• Multilingual: activities which simultaneously present more than Source and/or Target
Language.
• Combinations of the above are possible.
Whilst activities will help learners to enhance one or more of the four traditional language
skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing), they also all aim to develop and/or enhance
audiovisual (AV) competence and skills in language learners, with tasks specifically
designed to target AV skills, which are defined as follows:
• AV Listening (listening to words in combination with nonverbal AV elements, sound or
picture)
• AV Reading (reading words written on the screen, such as captions) to develop visual-verbal
literacy
July 2014 Page | 4
5. D4.1 Development of captioning and revoicing activities
• Picture-literacy / Picture-reading (i.e. AV comprehension of nonverbal film images) to
develop nonverbal visual literacy
• AV Watching (i.e. simultaneous combined 1, 2 and 3) to develop fully integrated AV
literacy skills
• AV Speaking (i.e. REVOICING) to develop AV verbal literacy
• AV Writing (i.e. CAPTIONING) to develop visual verbal literacy
• Again, combinations of the above are possible.
It is considered that learners can be requested to provide one or more of three type of
responses, which must be specified in the Activity Profile Template:
• Repeat (intralingual or interlingual repetition, synonym/paraphrase, e.g. literal
translation);
• Rephrase (express the same idea in a different way, reword or adapt);
• React (a new contribution or new content expressed by learner).
Audiovisual tasks are divided into two broad categories: Captioning and Revoicing. All
activities will include at least one AV task, as follows:
• Captioning: audio description, dubbing, free commentary, karaoke, voiceover;
• Revoicing: intertitles, multimodal writing, speech bubbles, subtitles.
Activities are also defined in terms of Learner type and target audience. Learners have
been grouped in the following types:
• Teacher dependent: working with the constant and consistent presence of a teacher
• Guided: working within a structured framework, with some guidance but without the
consistent presence of a teacher
• Independent: working without teacher or guidance.
Target audiences have been defined according to age, as follows:
• < 13 years old
• 13-18 years old
• 18-35 years ols
• > 35 years old.

2 Peer review process
All activities were peer reviewed. The peer review periods were in mid-project and at the
end of the project. A spreadsheet with a list of all activities was shared through the cloud
service of Google. All partner members were asked to participate in the reviewing process
and choose 10-15 activities from the activity spreadsheet (see figure below) using the
filters, e.g. by language.
Figure 1: Example of spreadsheet with activities for the peer review process
Reviewers were asked to use the peer review form (see section 4) for each activity and
then mark it as reviewed in the activities spreadsheet. Activity authors then checked the

peer review responses (see Figure 2) and decided whether they would like to correct their
activities, marking it as “checked by author”.

Direction complements and their
extended use
Big Buck Bunny
35. This activity is designed to help you to
understand and practise how to use the
direction complements and their extended
use. You may not know all the animals'
names and all the actions they did. Don't
worry, all the vocabulary is given, and you
are not required to remember all the
words. Captions (with gaps to fill the
direction complements) and revoicing for
all the major actions have been done for
you to help you overcome the problem of
new vocabulary. You only need to
concentrate on the direction of their
actions and how to use the direction
complements. Grammar explanation and
answers are all given at the end of the text,
but I'd prefer that you leave them to the
end and only use them to check your work.
Detailed instruction on how to use the
activity are written in the text.

Pasteis Belem 2
First watch and listen to the full videoclip
for understanding the story about "Pastéis
de Belém". Notice that when the
narrator/journalist speaks there are no
captions on the screen. Your 1st task: listen
again and write down what the journalist
says, in English. Watch and listen again.
Check that what she says matches what
you have written. Your 2nd task: this time
translate the English text (which you have
written in task 1 above) into Portuguese.
Now create as many captions and times as
you need and insert them with the
appropriate screen timings. The first four
have been done for you.
