Case Study | AASTMT
Size: 27,000 students and 5000 staff Location: Egypt Industry: Education
Now, the academy aims to be a proving ground for a wholesale shift in the way
education is delivered in Egypt. And, before long, to become a best-practice
model for the region.
To do that AASTMT had to seize the opportunity presented by the Internet
of Everything. “We wanted to merge the physical and virtual worlds into one
another,” says Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Ali, Director, Computer Networks and
Data Center.
But Wi-Fi was pretty much non-existent, and wired networks were far too slow.
Dr. Ali adds, “We had to invest in a fast, intelligent infrastructure. Cisco was able
to deliver everything in a very aggressive timeframe.”
“Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport
has a vital role in transforming Egypt and the Arab World towards
tomorrow’s knowledge economy. We need to educate, open the
door to innovation, and deliver better education and research
quality in a rapid-changing knowledge world.”
Dr. Ismail Abdel Ghafar, President of the Arab Academy for Science,
Technology and Maritime Transport
Offering award-winning education, training, and research, the AASTMT has
come a long way since 1972. New courses continuously adapt to emerging
global business trends. Traditional lines of study are regularly reviewed and,
where needed, trashed or transformed.

Knowledge sharing offers amazing access
Cisco was able to share its experiences from similar projects with other
institutions around the world. “Not only are we putting in tried and tested Cisco
kit, we also have access to an amazing knowledge base for online and distance
learning,” says Dr. Ali.
The entire academy is interconnected
With all sites linked, information flows effortlessly around and between the
two main campuses in Cairo and Alexandria, five satellite sites, and a smart
new student village.
Networking is much quicker and more secure
Now network speeds are 16-times faster with plenty of bandwidth for video.
There’s 100 percent wireless coverage with secure partitioning between staff,
students, and visitors. Internal meetings can be set up at short notice with
Cisco TelePresence technology.

3. Advancing education with the Internet of Everything
Students log in from anywhere using their own devices on campus and in
dormitories. They even connect to Wi-Fi on the bus to check timetables and
email, and securely access the central learning management system from
home. Classrooms are fitted with smart boards, so content can be digitized
and shared over the network.
Using Cisco Jabber® and WebEx® solutions means people can collaborate
and share projects more effectively. Cisco Digital Signage assists navigation
and helps improve personal safety and security. Cisco Identity Services Engine
makes security simpler with automated policy enforcement.
Dr. Ali sums up: “The transformation is well underway and touches every
element of education including content and media, teaching, and learning.”
