Generation Hotspots by End of 2013

Why is deploying Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) so important for operators? Because the technology
will make it easier for the end user to access Wi-Fi Hotspots and experience improved ease of access and
security. The industry is moving towards new standards like NGH and according to the WBA Wi-Fi
Industry Survey and Report (released today, November 5th), a fifth of operators surveyed plan to launch
NGH by end of 2013. These deployments will help operators understand how they can make a return on
NGH-related investment to ensure this technology reaches its full potential.
The WBA Wi-Fi Industry Survey also predicts growth in outdoor Wi-Fi access. In the Wi-Fi industry, there
is now an ongoing commitment from operators to integrate Wi-Fi into their overall mobile broadband
portfolio which is an extension of their investment into public Wi-Fi over the last 12 months. Some
operators are seeing as much as 75% of traffic in the home being carried over a Wi-Fi network,
compared to just 5% outdoors. However, as connecting to a public Wi-Fi network becomes easier, the
percentage of Wi-Fi access outdoors is expected to grow.
The WBA's Wi-Fi Industry Report in conjunction with Informa Telecoms and Media is based on a survey
of 386 respondents from the Wi-Fi eco-system, the largest proportion being integrated operators.
