2. 3 Ways to Target
Keywords
• Before you start link building, your
blog should have these 3 keyword
‘targets’.
3. 1.) Homepage
Phrase
• Your homepage phrase (‚main
phrase‛) is what keyword the main
page of your blog is targeting (ie,
www.example.com)
4. Tips
• Your homepage phrase should be the
most difficult keyword you target.
• If your blog is about ‘blues music’, go
for something like ‚blues music blog‛
or even ‚blues music‛.
• When guest posting from authority
sites, link to your homepage with this
keyword
5. 2.) Resource
Phrase(s)
• Your blog should target slightly less
difficult keywords (‚body phrases‛)
on what are known as resource
pages. Example in next slide.
7. Tips
• Your resource pages should be about
the large topics that your blog covers,
or the largest aspects of your brand.
• If your blog is a ‘paleo diet’ blog, one of
your resource pages could be about
‚paleo diet recipes‛, and would target
that keyword.
• These resource pages should be linked
to from your homepage.
8. 3.) Blog Post
Phrases
• These keywords are what your
specific blog posts target (‚long tail
keywords‛). Ex: Any post that is
trying to rank for a search term.
9. Tips
• Blog posts should usually be targeting
smaller, less competitive key phrases,
since you’ll be posting more often.
• If you are creating a large resource or
using an infographic, it’s okay to go for
bigger phrases (as those posts tend to
draw a lot of links).
• It’s good to link ‚deep‛ into your site
to these posts from other sites.
10. 5 Ways to Build
Links
• Link-building usually comes in the
form of purposeful link building
and ‚attracting‛ links via content.
• Here are easy 5 ways to do this.
11. 1.) Guest Post
for Others
• Guest posting is talked about a lot,
but it’s an amazing link-building
strategy. The key is to link deep into
your articles (not just your
homepage)
12. 2.) Interview
Influencers
• Influential people in your niche
have a lot more clout than you.
• If you interview them, they will
often link to the post & attract other
links
13. 3.) Create
Widgets
• Creating on-site widgets (such as
WordPress plugins) can be really
useful for getting backlinks. You can
also create things like badges for
people to embed on their site.
14. 4.) Massive
Round-Ups
• Compiling a huge round-up on a
specific topic (like the Entrepreneur’s
Handbook) will attract interest from
the community, who presumably are
your target audience.
15. 5.) Crowdsource
/ Ego Bait
• A crowdsourced/ego-bait post is
creating an article featuring the
opinions of multiple influencers. Either
get short quotes from them, or short
statements & put them all in one post.
16. On Contextual
Linking
• Contextual linking (linking to places
on your site with the exact keyphrase)
should only be done from authority
sites, and shouldn’t be over-utilized.
Link contextually sparingly.
