  3. 3. What is Stress? •Stress is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. •It can come from any event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. •Stress is your body's reaction to a challenge or demand.
  4. 4. Stress begins in the brain When we are stress, our emotions is processed by our amygdala (part of the brain). Our emotional response to stress will send information to our hypothalamus. Our hypothalamus is the command center of the brain. When the hypothalamus commands, our body reacts
  5. 5. 1. ACUTE STRESS DISORDER •A person who has experienced or witnessed a life- threatening, terrifying or otherwise deeply traumatic event may, in some cases, develop acute stress Causes •Natural disasters, such as floods, fires or earthquakes •Physical or sexual assault •Car accidents •Sudden death of a loved one •Receiving a life- Stress in a short period
  6. 6. PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE STRESS DISORDER •Palpitations, i.e. a pounding heart •Difficulty breathing •Chest pain •Headache •Stomach pain •Nausea •Sweating.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE STRESS DISORDER •Arousal: Hypervigilance, an inability to focus, sleep disturbances, irritable mood and angry outbursts •Avoidance: Determination to avoid memories, people, feelings or places associated with the trauma •Dissociation: A sense of physical displacement, e.g. seeing oneself from outside one’s body, feeling dazed, experiencing an altered perception of time, difficulty remembering the event •Intrusion: Recurrent, involuntary flashbacks of the event, nightmares about the event
  8. 8. 2. CHRONIC STRESS DISORDER ••A consistent sense of feeling pressured and overwhelmed over a long period of time. •CAUSES •Racism •Discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation •Disability •Poverty •Lack of access to adequate education •Adverse childhood Stress in a long period of
  9. 9. SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC STRESS DISORDER •Fatigue •Pain •Bloating •Nausea or vomiting •Changes in appetite •Diarrhea or constipation •Spasms in the bowel
  10. 10. EUSTRE SS •Eustress refers to stress that leads to a positive response.
  11. 11. Examples of Eustress • exercise that matches a person’s ability and fitness level • travel that is stressful but ultimately rewarding • work that is challenging but fulfilling • major life changes that a person desires, such as moving house or getting married.
  12. 12. DISTRES S •Distress can be described as an unpleasant emotion, feeling, thought, condition, or behavior.
  13. 13. Examples of Distress •bullying •controlling or manipulative behavior •a relationship ending against a person’s wishes •the death of a loved one

  24. 24. GENERAL STRESS SYNDROME 2. STAGE OF RESISTANCE - The acquired adaptation is lost if the individual is subject to still greater exposure to stressor.
  25. 25. GENERAL STRESS SYNDROME 3. EXHAUSTION STAGE -the body has died because it has used up all the resources.
