But starvation isn’t the way to do it. First of all, if you cut too many calories your body will think it’s starving…and will compensate by slowing down your metabolism. Secondly, your muscles need food after a work-out so they can repair themselves and grow. FIX IT: Never cut your food intake by more than 15% or 500 calories, whichever is less. And make sure you give your muscles the fuel they need after a workout. (See the article on page 3, “Get Bigger Muscles By Doing This Right After a Workout.”) 4 THIRST. Did you know that your muscles are 75% water? It’s true! Yet most guys don’t drink nearly enough. FIX IT: To find out how much water you need to drink, take your body weight and divide it in half. That means if you weigh 160 pounds, you’ll need to drink 80 ounces of water each day. Add another 16 -24 ounces on days when you’re working out. 5 SPORTS DRINKS AND NUTRITION BARS. We know, we know. We just finished telling you your muscles need plenty of water and fuel, and now we’re telling you to avoid sports drinks and nutrition bars. Well, take heart. SUDDEN GROIN PAIN. ■ What it feels like: Not as severe as a shot to the crotch, but pretty close. Sometimes accom- panies by swelling. ■ What it is: It might just be an infection. But odds are it’s some- thing called testicular torsion, a condition where the spermatic cords get twisted, cutting off the blood flow to your testicles. “If you catch it in 4 to 6 hours, you can usually save the testicle,” says Jon Pryor, MD, a urologist at the University of Minnesota. “But after 12 hours, you’ll proba- bly lose it.” ■ What to do: Go to the emer- gency room and get a physical exam and ultrasound. If it’s an infection, you’ll get antibiotics. And if it’s torsion, a surgeon will straighten the cords and reinforce them. And all it takes is a few stitches. 2. SEVERE BACK PAIN. ■ What it feels like: Similar to the agony you’d expect if you’d just tried to clean and jerk a refrigerator. ■ What it is: “If it’s not related to exer- cise, sudden severe back pain can be the sign of an aneurism,” says Sigfried Kra, MD a professor at Yale medical school. But don’t worry; the pain sub- sides—right after your body’s main artery bursts. A less threatening possibility is that you have a kidney stone, which won’t kill you but will make you wish you were dead. ■ What to do: Get to the ER immediately and get yourself a CT scan. Once the size and shape of the aneurism is determined, it can be treated with blood pres- sure medication or a routine sur- gical procedure. 3. CALF PAIN WITH SWELLING. ■ What it feels like: One of your calves is killing you. It’s swollen and tender to the touch, and may even feel warm. ■ What it is: Chances are that the blood in your leg has formed a clot, or deep-vein thrombosis. Unfortunately, the first thing you’ll want to do–rub your leg–is also the worst. “It can send a big clot running up to your lung, where it can kill you,” warns John Stamatos, MD, med- ical director of North Shore Pain Services in Long Island. ■ What to do: Rush to the hospital and get a type of x-ray called a venogram. If you have a thrombosis, they’ll dissolve the clot with drugs or outfit you with a “vein filter” that stops the clot before it stops you. 4. “TRANSIENT” CHEST PAIN. ■ What it feels like: When does chest pain mean a heart attack and when is it nothing seri- ous? During the procedure, called a radio-fre- quency facelift, physicians zap wrinkles with a blast of high-powered radio waves, causing skin to contract and tighten. As the skin tightens, it helps erase fine lines and wrinkles and lifts sagging facial muscles. “The procedure generally takes less than half an hour and is much safer than a surgical face- lift,” says David Goldberg MD, a dermatologist at Mount Sinai School of Med- icine in New York. Radio-frequency face lifts are available at select medical centers across the country. (Prices range from $1,000 to $2,000 per session.) ᮤ ᮤ ᮤ SOY RAGE. Eating too much soy may trigger angry outbursts. When Wake Forest University researchers fed large quantities of either soy protein or animal protein to groups of male monkeys for 15 months, they found that they soy group underwent violent mood swings. Normally, “male aggressive behavior is mediated by estrogens that are made from testosterone,’ says study author Jay Kaplan, PhD. “But the phytoestrogens in soy may block the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in the brain.” Kaplan hasn’t verified the findings in humans, but says “virtually everything we find to be true in monkeys turns out to be equally so in people.” To be safe, avoid protein bars containing soy and opt for whey protein instead. Limit soy phytoestrogens to 65 mg per day (about as much as in a single serving of soy chips. THE MORE FOOD ON YOUR PLATE, THE MORE YOU’LL EAT, regardless of hunger. Penn State University researchers recently car- ried out a sneaky study, replacing a restau- rant’s standard serving of baked pasta with a serving nearly 50 percent larger. When cus- tomers were surveyed about both serving sizes, they rated each “appropriate.” They also polished off the plus-size portion, netting an extra 172 calories.
