2. 1: Would you watch the full documentary
after watching the first 5 minutes?

Yes
No
We felt this to be a fantastic result. While everybody who took the
questionnaire was in our target audience we still felt that having 83% of
people enjoy the documentary enough that they would watch the full
documentary that this was an immense achievement. This showed that
despite a seeming lack of interest on the topic of boxing in our first
questionnaire adding the human element of inequality gave it an extra
dimension to entice and entertain viewers.
3. 2. Do you think the voiceover is
appropriate for our documentary?

Series 1
This was an element we feared due to the voice being male
despite the documentary being targeted at mostly females.
However we felt that since every interviewee was a female
some male representation should be had to not only attract
male viewership but also to not overload the documentary
with women and have a sense of balance for all viewers. To
ensure the success of the voice over the voice was of a male
within the target audience to represent everyone. This clearly
translated well as 100% of participants felt it appropriate.

Mise en Scene
The work we did on editing and sound was most definitely not to make it
stand out but to make it run as smoothly as possible, for this exact reason
we were somewhat glad they didn’t stand out and we never expected or
even wanted them to achieve high scores on this question. Rob Stryker
said that ‘that a good documentary should tell not only what a place or a
thing or a person looks like, but it must also tell the audience what it
would feel like to be an actual witness to the scene. As such we put a
particular stress on the mise en scene of the interviews and we were
pleased to see that this translated into our feedback.
5. 4. What do you think are the
weaknesses of the documentary?

Mise en Scene
Editing
Sound
Camerawork
We found these results disappointing as poor editing and sound can result in a
jarring effect and cause viewers to channel surf resulting in a poor viewership. This
may be because of the stress placed on mise en scene and camerawork caused us
to neglect these two elements resulting in a more disjointed documentary.
People commented on a lack of music as we only had one song at the beginning,
initially we felt that this would ensure that people got the message of the
documentary but in hindsight more music would have helped to break the
documentary up and make it easier to digest. Next time we would spend more
time trying to equalise the sound and smooth the editing through transition to
ensure our audience didn’t feel these elements were weak.
6. 5. Does the title sequence clearly illustrate
the topic of the documentary?

Yes No
Series 1
The majority of people felt that the title sequence illustrated the topic
of the documentary with one participant saying ‘references females and
boxing’. We felt this fair as it was simply lots of females boxing with
music on top. The only person that disagreed said that ‘it doesn’t
specify that it’s about women’ we found this confusing as it only
features female boxers, however for any that didn’t grasp the topic in
the opening sequence the voiceover is fairly explicit about it
immediately after.
7. 6. Do you think the documentary
represents a strong narrative?
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Yes
No
Series 1
Having a societally challenging documentary like ours a strong narrative
was vital to convey exactly what we were trying to get across in the
documentary. This was challenging since we could only get three relevant
interviews but using what we could from these and archive footage we felt
we had constructed a strong narrative and we were glad this translated
into the audience feedback.
8. 7. Would the radio trailer make you
want to watch the documentary?
Yes
No
Within the radio trailer we used very dramatic music as a means to build
tension. For most this was liked as people described it as ‘intense’
however we expected some to find it ‘cheesy’ and as such were not
surprised by the one person who didn’t necessarily like it but still felt it
an impressive number.
9. What are the strengths of the radio
trailer?
• Most of the feedback commented on the
quality use of music to build tension. This was
what we set out to do as we felt a tense radio
trailer would stick in the minds of viewers and
ensure their viewership. Some also
commented on our interview excerpts as
‘piquing interest’ showing that the content of
the documentary itself was also key in enticing
viewers.
10. What are the weaknesses of the radio
trailer?
• Five of six people commented that there was
no weakness with just one commenting that
they didn’t like the music which was
considered a strength by everyone else. We
felt that all this proved was that inevitably not
everyone could be pleased.
11. On a scale of one to five how would
you rate the sound?

We felt this highlighted a weakness in our documentary. As stated
before if we were to do it again we would feature more music. Another
issue we faced was the abrupt ending to one of the pieces of our
archive footage. Unfortunately this was irreplaceable as it was key to
the narrative of the documentary and despite attempting to smooth it
out it was impossible to fully correct it. If we were to do this again we
may consider interviewing another person to replicate the message
given by the archive footage.
12. On a scale of one to five how would
you rate the editing?

We actually viewed these results as a positive despite their mediocre
nature. We felt that the editing was never intended to stand out in
the first place but was rather a medium to smooth out jump cuts and
allow the documentary to run smoothly. The disparity in results
suggests people didn’t really notice the editing which we felt
highlighted the smoothness of the editing.

These results show the high level of success of our interviewees. We
knew that these would form the basis for our documentary and as such
reached out through twitter and extensive searches to find our
interviewees. We ended up with two professional boxers and the head
female coach of the ABA, each were well spoken and well informed and
added an extra level of quality to our documentary.
14. Does the voiceover fit the radio
trailer?
6
0
Yes
No
This was an element we feared due to the voice being male despite the
documentary being targeted at mostly females. However we felt that
since every interviewee was a female some male representation should
be had to not only attract male viewership but also to not overload the
documentary with women and have a sense of balance for all viewers.
To ensure the success of the voice over the voice was of a male within
the target audience to represent everyone. This clearly translated well
as 100% of participants felt it appropriate.
15. Does the print ad intrigue you to want
to watch the documentary?
Yes
No
The print ad uses a combination of angles and female aggression to
display a power struggle between men and women. The high quality of
the image portrayed the females facial expression as anger and allowed
many to personally identify with her. The message it conveyed was
clearly interesting to viewers who all said it intrigued them to watch the
documentary.
16. What are the strengths of the print
ad?
• The majority of people agreed that it
represented the topic well which we tried our
best to ensure that it did. Some also
commented on the lighting which we stressed
to ensure the females facial expression was
shown to ensure viewers could personally
identify with the model
17. What are the weaknesses of the print
ad?
• Only one person gave a weakness who said that
the text placement was confusing. While
ambiguous they could perhaps be referring to the
fact that it wasn’t entirely clear whether the title
was ‘Below the Belt’ or ‘Fighting for Equality’ This
was highlighted as a potential issue and as such
we altered the line from ‘Join the Fight For
Equality’ although it would appear that this still
wasn’t clear enough. This could lead to confusion
amongst people who want to view the
documentary and as such if we were to do this
again would be an issue we would address.
18. Does the print ad connote the topic of
the documentary?
Yes
No
People commented on a ‘Tough looking female boxer’ which we tried to
connote through her facial expression. Unfortunately people seemed to miss
the power struggle between man and woman although this may be more of a
subconscious issue rather than an explicit one.
19. Is the quality of the image good?
Yes
No
We used the highest quality camera available as well as some basic
photoshop skills. This meant that the quality of the image was of the
highest standard possible.
