This document summarizes Chloe Ross' evaluation of her magazine project. For her research, she analyzed different magazines' content, styles, and audiences to inform her own magazine design. Her planning process helped her choose a movie magazine topic and develop mood boards. She managed her time well to complete several pages but would have added more with more time. For technical qualities, she compared her magazine's cover design to another magazine. She believes her work appeals to its target teenage and young adult male audience through its movie-focused content and images.
2. Research
For my research I looked at all different types of magazines
such as Vogue, Q magazine and Empire. I wanted to see
the similarities and differences between the different topic
of magazine so with Vogue it’s a lifestyle magazine and the
style of it is very formal compared to Empire the movie
magazine that’s more out there and in your face as they
have a lot more going on in there cover and the fonts they
use are very bold compared to vogue which is more subtle
and elegant. So I applied this to my magazine which I knew
I wanted to do a movie one so I tried to go for the same
style and Empire and Total film.
I think the strength of my research was analyzing the different content, style and aesthetic of the different magazines,
also finding out the audience for them helped me break down who my audience for my magazine will be aimed at. The
layouts of the magazine as well helped me space mine out and do it in a font that isn’t too small for my reader,
depending on who it’s aimed at.
I think for my research to make it better I could of looked at two of the same topic of magazine so for vogue I
could of also looked at GQ or Elle which are both lifestyle magazines and it would of helped me more to see the
similarities that they have, such as how much they write in there pages or if they use the same fonts etc. I think
this would of helped to see if all the magazines that cover the same topic have same layout plans and I could of
applied that to my final product or if they do something different to each other I could of also applied that to
my work as well.
Overall I think my research had a big impact on my final product as I took inspiration from it and it gave me
ideas on how to layout my pages and what to do for my front cover. On some of my double pages I did do my
own style but for most of it, it was taken from my research.
3. Planning
For my planning, it helped me eliminate the style of magazine I
wanted to do. So with my mind map I came up with three different
ideas on what type of magazine I wanted to make and I just thought
which do I know most about and what could I write about so that
helped me choose one topic to do. Also doing mood boards for my
chosen magazine helped me pick out what colors and images would
help sell the aesthetic of movies and it gave me an idea of what the
reader would think of when they looked at the cover because I
wanted them to automatically assume movies just at first glance.
I think to help improve my planning I could of made up a mock layout of my
cover just with boxes and notes pointing at what would go where and what
colors, fonts and style I could add to it, just to give me a better idea of what I
want to do and what would go where. I think this would of helped me plan out
my front cover more and give me a better idea of how I could of done it. It also
would of saved me time when it came to production, because then I would of
known exactly where to place everything.
Overall, my planning definitely helped me get a better idea of what
style and layout I wanted to do for my final product. My Bibliography
I made also gave me help to find different content I could put in my
magazine as well, which also helped me save time when it came to
production because I wasn’t trying to find different links and sources,
where I could get ideas for my articles. I could just use the sources in
my bibliography.
4. Time Management
I think I have managed my time well, I’ve managed to do my front cover, 3 double
pages and one single page. I think if I had more time I would of done a contents
page and possibly another double page covering another movie. I also think for my
first double page I could of neaten that up a bit because I feel like it’s all to squished
together, so I would of spaced that out a bit more. I also would of written a bit more
or added something extra to my last double page just because for that page I did
feel like I was running out of time so I rushed that more than I did the other pages,
so I would of added more to that.
However, overall I think I have managed my time well as I’ve left plenty of time to
also complete my evaluation but if I was given more time I would of added some
more pages just to give my magazine a bit more to it or I would tried to improve my
other pages by maybe adding some more pictures or some text to my articles and
make it look more like a proper magazine.
5. Technical Qualities
For my title of my my magazine I wanted it to
stand out and I wanted the font to be a movie
font, compared to total films font mine stands
out a lot more just because of the color and the
style, with Total film they’ve made there’s more
subtle so the readers attention is more on the
central image.
On the cover we’ve both included a
part where it says what will feature
inside the magazine, I’ve made mine
slightly bigger so more attention is
drawn to it whereas Total film’s is a
bit smaller so the focus is more on
Aquaman.
For my central image I wanted it to
immediately scream movies, so I took a
picture of someone sat in the cinema
with a popcorn box and 3D glasses I
thought it would cover the aesthetic,
with Total film they’ve included one
image from the movie that will be the
main feature of the magazine, for mine
I did a film reel of all different movies
to show I'm not just focuses on one.
With Total film they’ve got a
tagline below the Aquaman title
that refers to the movie, in the
corner of my magazine I put a
quote from the ‘Joker’ movie that
refers to the magazine.
I put ’Top 10 movies 2019’ in
bold so it stood out and the
reader automatically knows
what the movies about,
similarly in the Total film
magazine they’ve made the
Aquaman title stand out by
the boldness and so you’re
automatically drawn to it.
6. Technical Qualities
For the page title I’ve made it quite small
with the font, but still big so it’s
noticeable, with the other double page
they’ve made the title really bold so its
stands out and you’re immediately drawn
to it.
I’ve included quite a few
pictures in my magazine just
so I could space out my text
more and so it’s not all just
writing, similar to the spider-
man magazine they’ve
paragraphed it more than I
have and it looks more
spaced.
For my background I’ve made
it dark so my white text stood
out, I also did it the color that
symbolized the joker as he’s
wearing red most of the time.
For the spider-man magazine
they’ve done the background
so it blends with the image as
Spiderman's leg stretches
across the page.
On my double page I’ve included quotes in the boxes just to add
bit more to my page which the spider-man one hasn’t.
7. Aesthetic Qualities
I think my work looks good, I tried to match it with the aesthetic of film and movies so if
someone saw it they would immediately know it’s to do with movies. I think it’s creative for my
cover I went to the cinema and took a picture of my friend sat in a chair watching a movie with a
box of popcorn and behind it I made a film reel with different movie posters that I’m including in
my magazine. I also made my own font for the title so it looked like gold and you can see the
shine of it, I think in my front cover I’ve included images and fonts that can be immediately
associated with movies.
Inside my magazine I tried to make it stand out as much as I
could for example, I’ve included lots of images and
different colored text to try and make it sand out. I think
my double pages were creative, for my first page I did it in
my own style then my second I took inspiration from other
magazine layouts. What I like about my front cover is the
movie reel in the background, I like how that turned out
because it took e a while to get the images to fit inside the
squares and it turned out better than I expected. I also like
the title of my magazine because I like the shine of he gold
color on it.
To improve my magazine for the front cover, I had another idea for
the central image, so it was someone holding a directors board and
I think I should of taken a picture of that as well and done two
covers to see which looked better. For my first double page I would
also lay it out different so maybe in columns instead of the text
wrapping around the image, I think it would look a lot neater.
For my double page title I did it
similar to my main cover title so
it stood out and it was a
repetitive theme.
I tried to have 5 movies on each page but I
found it hard to spread them out, so on my
other page I tried to cut down the writing
so they would all fit.
8. Aesthetic Qualities
I really like how the title has turned
out, because it looks 3D gold and I
think it looks like a cinematic title.
I think I could of added a bit more
in the spaces where it looks a bit
blank because to me it looks a bit
too plain in some areas.
I also like how the film reel has turned out
and I chose one that wasn’t just a straight
film reel so it bends and swerves a bit, I think
it makes it stands out more and give the
cover a bit more to it.
The picture I took turned out darker than
expected because I took it on my phone with
flash, if I took it again I would of got my friend to
sit straighter in the chair as well because she’s
sat on a bit of an edge.
To improve it I would try and have a
light shining through the chair just
to make the picture look brighter or
have some light source shining on
her, I tried to a reflection glimmer in
the glasses to see if it would make a
difference but you can’t really tell.
9. Audience Appeal
I think I have appealed to my target audience, I’ve included all different types of movies with reviews and
awards they’ve won or have been nominated for as well as inside looks at movies. My audience is for
teenagers in their late teens up to mid 20’s mainly aimed towards boys as they typically prefer movies and
like looking depth at them. I think the images I’ve included would draw them in and the quotes page I did
might be something they find they like. The text writing I did is quite small, it’s smaller than I imagined it
would be so for some they might not be bothered to read it which is why I aimed it at a higher age group
that might be interested I reading rather than a younger audience.
I think on this page there’s a lot of
writing and it might not interest
many people, which is why I’ve put a
few images and quote boxes in to
make it appeal more to the reader.
The background color I wanted to stand
out because sometimes the colors can
be dull and it might not interest the
reader, also I chose a movie which is
most talked about to look into deeper
so I think the popularity of the movie
sells the magazine more to the
audience.
In my article I write about what the movie is about, facts
about filming it and quotes from actors and critics and I
look at controversial reviews for it as well, I think this
would appeal to my audience because it covers most
topics about the movie.
