People come into this field from many different backgrounds and professions.

In the mid-90s, when the Internet was just starting to heat up, I wanted to learn HTML. I put it on my professional development plan and my manager objected. He said that I was a brilliant Instructional Designer and it was a waste to have me coding HTML. Not that coding HTML is a lesser job, it’s just that there were other technical people on our team who had that skill and should grow it. I needed to grow in a different direction and work with our technical folks to improve our product.
