This support is tied to the student’s academic performance. In 2010–2011, SIPA’s fellowship budget was $8.8 million—about 14.2 percent of SIPA’s total budget and the second largest direct expense after faculty salaries. About 14 percent of SIPA’s fall 2010 incoming class received fellowship support. First-year awards range from $15,000– $30,000 and are granted based on the strength of the admissions application. SIPA fellowships for continuing students are linked to an instructional position (teaching or research assistant) or an administrative position (program assistant). There are also many endowed and external fellowships available to students. Students apply for second- year support during their first year. Awards are based on academic performance. Approximately 70 percent of SIPA students who apply for fellowships for their second year receive an award. In 2010–2011, there were 218 instructional assistantships awarded and 70 administrative assistantships awarded. The amount ranged from $6,000 to $20,000. Student teams work on substantive, policy-oriented projects with external clients, which include international NGOs, multinational organizations, and major firms in the private sector. Each team works under the supervision of a faculty expert and addresses a carefully defined problem. The team produces an actionable report that is intended to make a difference.
