The history of the Internet began with the idea of connecting computers over a network to enable communication between users. Lawrence Roberts designed ARPANET, the first packet switching network, in the 1960s which later merged with other networks to form the Internet. By the 1980s, TCP/IP was established as the main protocol and standards were developed to allow different networks to interconnect. In 1989, NSFNET became the largest network and helped connect universities. The World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in the late 1980s and early 1990s, establishing HTML as the main language for sharing information over the Internet.
