2. SKILLS & INTERESTS
Planning, people management and managing client/supplier expectations.
Education in and sensibility, awareness and enjoyment of both English and
French culture, language and society.
Continued education in German (medium level) and advancements in teacher/
training techniques (particularly web-based).
Avid reader with an especially strong liking for thrillers and the new-wave Nordic
genre.
TRAINING
Experience From a base in adult education to now coordinating and teaching to the highest
managerial/public sector level.
Versatility Ability to adapt and work with clients of varying language skills, prestige,
environments and outlooks. Keeping abreast of relevant cultural and topical
affairs in order to maintain fresh and pertinent content.
Planning Whilst adhering to the agencies’and institutions’guidelines, I have consistently
been involved in developing programmes and solutions for all my clients.
Developing these programmes, not only for myself, but also for team members.
Flexibility Adapting to and accommodating the varied needs of clients from last-minute
re-scheduling through to sector-specific terminology and phraseology.
MANAGEMENT/SCHEDULING
Administration Corporate and public institutions coordinator at the Institut Français, London.
Duties include organising courses for students, managing teachers, schedules,
adapting to the needs of students and communicating in an effective way.
2 years’experience as a Community Development & Adult Education Officer
at Ashburnham Community Centre. Overall my duties involved all aspects of
administrating a busy community centre – bookings, problem solving, basic
bookkeeping.
I am also closely involved with the administrative aspects of the French course at
Linguarama, including covering for the Head of French when needed.
Initiative While at Ashburnham (having successfully completed my Teacher Training
Course, City & Guilds, during after-hours and weekend study), I established
classes at the centre in French, Spanish, German and Italian. All aspects of set-up
and managing were covered by myself – staff/pupil liaison, marketing, finance
and scheduling.
Resourcefulness Right from my time working on an ad-hoc basis for a small two-man design
agency (duties ranged from‘holding the fort’to receptionist to supplier co-
ordination to envelope/invitation stuffing), I have always been very happy to“get
stuck in”. Throughout my career I have always enjoyed dealing with, and, when
necessary, solving the unexpected and oddities that planning and administration
throw up.
3. AUTHORSHIP/CONSULTING
Scope Throughout my years in teaching, I have maintained a regular working
relationship with language-specialist, G & W Publishing. Proofing, translating
and giving guidance on French language and culture.
Application A high point of this relationship with G & W Publishing was my authoring of
Dorling Kindersley’s“15-Minute French”– their highly successful early-entrance
business French course. Not only was this a pleasure to do, but the challenges
inherent in such a project (from content – bringing a distinct (French) flavour to
an established template, through to time/client-expectation management) with,
at first, limited experience, added a great deal to my overall skill-set.
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Inquisitiveness I am always open to opportunities to broaden my knowledge-base. For instance,
I am at present being tutored in German (progressing from a medium level).
Additionally, I did two weeks’work experience at Random House Children’s
Books in the editorial department. My duties included reading manuscripts,
updating databases and writing back covers for different books and series. I also
attended Acquisitions meetings which was very instructive and gave me a good
insight into the world of publishing. As an avid reader, publishing has always
fascinated me, but much of what I learnt is very applicable across a wide range of
disciplines.
Opportunities I feel strongly that my skills are wide-ranging and suited to a wide variety of
roles and sectors. My ideal employment scenario would be one where my
distinct background can add a different aspect to the role while allowing me the
opportunity to continue and expand my personal development.
