The Moraleda Passive House, built in 2009, has
now received Passive House certification after
successful adjustment of the ventilation system.
An airtight envelope and airtight ventilation
ductwork was a big challenge for the project
architects and engineers in this pilot project. It
stands as the first certified Passive House in
Spain meeting all the Passive House criteria and
has been followed by other single-family houses,
which have recently been certified. Several
aspects set it apart: it’s location in hot and dry
Granada, its construction made of containers
and its aimed to be a zero heating and cooling
house. PHPP results have been confirmed by
the monitoring results: it is a real Passive
House. Though its heating and cooling demand
is not zero, it is certainly "nearly zero", or
Passive.
Casa Entre Encinas
Austurias, Spain
Architect: Duque y Zamora Architects
In Asturias Duque y Zamora Architects with
Certified Passive House Designer Iván González,
have designed and built a beautiful two-storey
Certified Passive House.
The challenge was to reach a high level of
compactness, minimising the thermal envelope
and thus the energy demand, without
compromising the principles of landscape
integration and optimal relation with the natural
surroundings. The result was a spectacular two
storey building taking advantage the existing
slope.

All interior spaces are part of the thermal
envelope in order to improve the form factor of
the building, and therefore reduce the energy
demand for heating and cooling.
With an air tightness of 0.39 h -1 and a primary
energy demand of 103 kWh/(m²a), this Passive
House is both a success story to be told, and an
example to be followed.
