Urban AreasUrban Areas
2. Common Challenges in most
urban areas
• Limited capital and human resources
• Increasing expectations of public and policy makers
• Increasing environmental sustainability awareness
• Increasing traffic volume on current streets and roads
• Pavement segments that need major rehabilitation:
block cracking, wheelphath cracking, oxidized
surfaces, utility cuts, and rough pavement sections
3. Traditional Pavement Treatments
• Simple Overlay
• Thin Mill and overlay
• Thick Mill and Overlay
• Digouts and overlay
• Major Reconstruction of roads down to the
Subgrade
• Combining preservation and rehabilitation
(i.e., two layer systems, three layer systems,
and etc)
4. Desired Outcome
• Long Lasting Pavement Life
• Smooth ride for all users
• Cost effective and optimized solutions
• Minimum environmental footprint
• Maximum Reuse of existing Materials and
Resources ( 100% RAP)
5. CIR-foamed Technology
• Pulverization of up to 6 inches
of pavement segments
• 100% RAP
• Recycling at Ambient
Temperatures (day and night)
• Cost Effective from LCCA
perspective
9. City of San Jose-2017 Projects
• 2,412,000 SF of 4” Cold-In-Place Recycling ( i.e., 38
lane miles of streets)
• Asphalt Binder – PG 64-10 (2.5 to 3%)
• Percentage of Cement – 1%
• Water: 2-3%
• Reduced Payment Factor for compaction and wet ITS
(98% Compaction required per CTM 216 method and
300 KPa for wet ITS)
13. Off hauling excess material in order to maintain the
correct grade of the road
14. Compaction of CIR
• Minimum Compaction requirement of 98%
• We achieved compaction utilizing two 12 Ton steel drum
vibratory rollers
• A 25 Ton pneumatic roller is used to prepare the roadway for
traffic
Good afternoon…
I know that you don’t need a report to tell you about the conditions of our streets. You are experiencing it everyday and I’m sure you hear it from your constituents on a regular basis.
Nonetheless, we are pleased to be presenting our annual pavement maintenance report. It has been an important helping us to understand and address the needs of our pavement maintenance program.
