POLICY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MANGROVE STRATEGIC
MANAGEMENT PLAN
Jakarta, 18 Juli 2018
MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY
Directorate General of Watershed Management and Protected Forest
WHAT IS BLUE CARBON ?
Blue carbon is the carbon captured by living organisms in oceans and coastal ecosystem and is stored in
the form of biomass within sediments from mangroves, salt marshes and sea grasses.
Mangroves
Mangroves are group of trees
which grow on the intertidal
zone, the zone between high
tide line and low tide line.
Tidal marshes
Tidal marshes are dominated
by dense salt-tolerant plants
such as succulent herbs and
low shrubs, and grasses. They
are found on soft sediments
on sheltered coastlines.
Seagrasses
Seagrasses are communities
of underwater flowering
plants. They are generally
restricted to habitats with
sediments comprised of sand,
silt and mud and high light
availability.
DG of Watershed
Management and
Protected Forest

District - Mangrove
Working Group. Until now
there were 27 Working
Group has been
established.
ü Mangrove Forest
Management Center
(BPHM) region I and II
(2006-2015).
ü Watersheds

Forestry Agency in 34
Districts.
MANGROVE WORKING GROUP
Indonesia has initiated ASEAN Mangrove Network (AMNET) since 2013.
AMNET aims to:
1. Support, promote and build the existing conservation and rehabilitation of mangrove
ecosystem management in ASEAN.
2. Become a platform for bringing better environment and livelihoods for the people
living along the coastal areas of AMS.
ASEAN Mangrove Network (AMNET)
The role of silvofishery is as a pattern of mangrove ecosystem management based on mangrove cultivation and
sustainable aquaculture in order to improve the welfare of people around the region.
SILVOFISHERY
Silvofishery Alternative Models Silvofishery in Serang, Banten
THE WAY FORWARD (STRATEGIES)
1. Mainstreaming mangrove
management in climate
change mitigation strategies
(e.g. NDC, REDD+)
2. Conservation of mangrove
forests (e.g. marine protected
areas)
3. Rehabilitation and restoration
of degraded mangroves and
abandoned ponds
4. Promote sustainable
management of aquaculture
ponds (e.g. Silvofishery,
IMTA)
5. Land use policy and
regulation on sustainable
mangrove management and
aquaculture
6. Improvement of coastal
community livelihood and
resilience to climate change
7. Strengthen participatory &
collaborative mangrove
management
8. Awareness raising to coastal
community

Policy and Implementation of Mangrove Strategic Management Plan

  • 1. POLICY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MANGROVE STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT PLAN Jakarta, 18 Juli 2018 MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT AND FORESTRY Directorate General of Watershed Management and Protected Forest
  • 2. WHAT IS BLUE CARBON ? Blue carbon is the carbon captured by living organisms in oceans and coastal ecosystem and is stored in the form of biomass within sediments from mangroves, salt marshes and sea grasses. Mangroves Mangroves are group of trees which grow on the intertidal zone, the zone between high tide line and low tide line. Tidal marshes Tidal marshes are dominated by dense salt-tolerant plants such as succulent herbs and low shrubs, and grasses. They are found on soft sediments on sheltered coastlines. Seagrasses Seagrasses are communities of underwater flowering plants. They are generally restricted to habitats with sediments comprised of sand, silt and mud and high light availability. DG of Watershed Management and Protected Forest focus on mangroves rehabilitation activities.
