Downstream users of water from the Cañete River in Peru are willing to redistribute the benefits of ecosystem services by rewarding communities upstream for maintaining the ecosystem and protecting water resources. On June 11, 2014, conditions for implementing and establishing such mechanisms improved as the Peruvian congress passed a law on rewards for ecosystem services mechanisms.
