  3. 3. The AGRIS network (.. & why to become AGRIS member) AGRIS stands for “International System for Agricultural Science & Technology” • A Global public domain database with more than 8 million structured bibliographical records on agricultural science & technology • A big network with more than 200 participating institutions from 65 countries • Supported & maintained by FAO and Agro-Know
  4. 4. The AGRIS network (.. & why to become AGRIS member) • Make your content available thought the AGRIS portal: – Improve the dissemination of your institution’s research outcomes – Make your content accessible to the agriculture community around the world • Add your collection at CIARD RING directory

  10. 10. Make a request to Akstem online service
  11. 11. Your Akstem personal space
  12. 12. Describe your collection
  13. 13. Submit your data or indicate where they can be found!
  14. 14. The most challenging step.. How can I contribute my bibliographic information to AGRIS? • But really.. .. what exactly do I need to submit to AGRIS?
  15. 15. AGRIS collects metadata We don’t collect documents.. .. but instead we collect their bibliographic descriptions (i.e. metadata)
  16. 16. In what ways can I share my metadata records? • We strongly recommend one of the following: – OAI-PMH target – Bulk XML files • But under specific requirements we also accept: – RSS feeds – SPARQL endpoint – API
  17. 17. OAI-PMH target • “The Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides an application- independent interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting” • http://www.openarchives.org/ • AGRIS highly recommends the use of OAI- PMH • Suggested: create a set specification by subject • You can register as a data provider at Open Archives
  18. 18. Bulk XML files • Another option is to share your records uploading in your AKstem personal space bulk XML files. • Many repositories or systems (e.g. Open Journal System) give the option export your records in XML in various metadata formats. • Good practices: • Use encoding UTF- 8 • Avoid special characters like &, <, >, “, ‘, • to use <![CDATA[…..]]> for text elements
  19. 19. Digital repository • As a digital repository is considered a system or application that supports management, storage & dissemination of digital objects & metadata records. • An indicative list of the most commonly used repositories: – Dspace (www.eprints.org/) – Fedora (https://getfedora.org/) – Eprints (http://www.eprints.org/) – Agridrupal (http://www.agridrupal.org/) – AgriMetaMaker (http://aims.fao.org/content/agrimetamaker)
  20. 20. AgriMetaMaker  The AgriMetaMaker (AMM) allows you to generate metadata as easily as possible  It is supported & maintained by FAO  The AGRIS data processing unit directly harvests metadata records
  21. 21. What metadata formats AGRIS Accepts? • AGRIS accepts in principle all metadata standards & formats. But still we recommend the following: – Dublin Core (DC) – AGRIS AP – MODS –METS – MARC21 – DOAJ – PubMed – OJS XML export (our suggestion is DOAJ)
