  1. 1. Banking from the Bus See how APIs power a productive commute This is Jeff. Every day, Jeff commutes from Oakland to San Francisco. It’s an hour on the bus, but Jeff doesn’t mind. He has some important tasks to take care of, including his banking. And he'll do it all on his phone. What Jeff doesn’t know is that all his transactions use multiple APIs to transport data and facilitate communication between apps. APIs build roads to previously inaccessible cities of data — making Jeff's banking quick and seamless. Jeff saved a lot of time and money today — and so did his bank. With technology connected by APIs, banks can give their customers and partners the convenient experience they want. And with the right technology in place, the bank and its partners can ensure that Jeff’s information remains secure and everything runs smoothly. Jeff's electric bill is due by Friday. He pays it quickly and easily with his banking app. The bank’s mobile payment API communicates with the electric company’s payment API, allowing the funds to travel straight from Jeff’s account. Jeff needs to deposit two paychecks. Using his bank’s app, he uploads images of the checks and deposits them to his account. No more trips to the ATM! The bank’s mobile deposit API processes the check instantly with image uploading and optical character recognition. His mom’s birthday is tomorrow, so Jeff uses points from his bank’s loyalty program to buy her favorite flowers. The flower shop app connects to the bank’s loyalty partner API, transporting Jeff’s points just in time. Jeff’s banking app sends him an alert. His checking account balance has dipped below a previously specified limit. The alert came via a monitoring API, which opened regular traffic between Jeff’s account and the app, allowing the app to send an alert as soon as his balance fell into the danger zone. Jeff gets a text from his friend. He owes her for the Neko Case tickets she bought. He transfers the cash using a popular online payment app. A P2P payment API helps transfer the funds from Jeff’s bank account to his friend’s account via the online payment service. Jeff arrives at the office. He’s done all his banking, and it’s only 9 am. While the bus transported Jeff to work, a collection of APIs transported his data between his bank’s various IT systems and those of other financial service providers and retailers. Jeff uses the app to transfer money from his savings account to his checking account. He’s back in the safe zone. The bank’s main account data API provided the route for Jeff to instantly transfer funds between the accounts, straight from his phone.
