How to find Keywords to Use

First determine the JOB / CAREER PATH
     YOU WANT
Without a goal you cannot determine the
     keywords you will need
Note: If you cannot address the keywords
found in the next few slides with your
     experience, education and/or training you
will need to find a new JOB / CAREER
PATH goal or plan to get there
© Robin’s Resumes®, 2011, www.robinresumes.com Page 4
How to find Keywords to Use

Use your goal to find the keywords:
Use a job board such as Indeed.com,
Careerbuilder.com or Monster.com to find job
announcements you want to apply for
If you do not know which job to apply for, use
www.onetonline.org to search for your job
goal and use that site to determine keywords

How to Include Keywords in Your
                       Resume - 1
Create a question for each keyword in the
     job announcement or O*Net listing:
        1. Take every duty and requirement in the job announcement or
tasks and knowledge in the O*NET job description and turn it
into a question. Add a phrase such as:

            • “What is your experience in ” or
            • “How have you demonstrated your ability in ” or
            • “How have you used your skills or knowledge in] ”

to the front of each duty or responsibility to create questions.

        2. Add a question mark to the end of each sentence.

How to Include Keywords in Your
                       Resume - 2
Create a questionnaire with a question for each keyword
in the job announcement or O*Net listing:

For the 1st statement in the Chemical Engineering job:
Plan, organize, and supervise process related laboratory
                and plant trials and experiments.

                   The question would be:
What is your experience in planning, organizing and
supervising process-related laboratory and plant trials and
                        experiments?

As a Chemical Engineer I used to plan, organize, and supervise process
                                          plan,
related laboratory and plant trials and experiments.
             • Name of Accomplishment: Reduce Volatile Organic Carbon (VOC) emissions
             • Background (Context) of Accomplishment (The background for the situation): EPA required VOC
emission reduction to approve plant expansion.
             • Your challenge: How to meet EPA requirement and keep the product quality the same
             • Action [What you did (steps)]: Identified sources of VOC emissions, researched alternative
technologies, developed project plant to test technologies in the lab, obtained approval and
ordered equipment, ran lab and consumer tests, tested product in plant, revised procedures to
                 achieve plant quality.
             • Results of what you did (include quantification such as dollars saved, increases in efficiency):
Saved more than $10 million in capital equipment costs and $1.3 million/year material costs.
             • Reason the Accomplishment was important: Could not implement plant expansion without
                 technology change
             • Your role: Project leader
             • Budget: $10,000
             • Number of people supervised and their roles: 1 lab technician
             • Number of users: N/A
             • Who you interacted with: Plant, R&D and Laboratory personnel
             • Technologies used: GC, consumer panels, constant temperature baths, stirrers, plant process
                 control systems
             • Awards (if any): Won company project innovation award
             • Which job? Brown and Williamson

                                    plan,
supervise process related laboratory and plant trials and

Based on my answer above, I could include the following
accomplishment for my Brown & Williamson position:
Secured EPA approval of plant expansion, saved $1.3
million/year expenses and more than $10 million in
capital costs by conceiving, planning, organizing and
supervising process-related laboratory and plant trials and
            process-
experiments to implement award-winning technology which
                          award-
reduced Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions.

Recommend to use the following format for
     accomplishment statements in the resume:

     <Accomplished what> by <describe what you did>
                      what>
     through using <technologies list>.

Use keywords from the announcement in this statement
for describing what you did and the technologies list.

You also can have skills in the header (describe your
main skills related to keywords). Good for getting
attention. Do NOT use tables in your summary – they will
not be picked up by Automatic Tracking Systems.
For example, I could use the following on the bottom of
my summary with accomplishments in the resume to
     prove my expertise:
Laboratory Experiments • Plant Trials • Process Equipment and Process Flows
Operation Efficiency Improvements • Cost Savings • New Product Development
Best Manufacturing Practices • Mass / Energy Balance • Quality Management
Research and Development • Team Membership / Team Leadership
Lean Manufacturing • 6 Sigma • Value Stream Mapping • Technical Writing and Presentations
Project Management • Plant Operations • Clay Field • Wet and Dry Processing
Chemistry • Engineering • Math • ISO 9000 Standards and Audits • Experimental Design
Milling • Plant Automation • Financial Assessment and Budgeting • Troubleshooting

Keywords for LinkedIn and other Social
                  Media - 1
Keywords are also needed for LinkedIn.
Recruiters passively search LinkedIn for candidates.
Include keywords you identified in job announcements,
other LinkedIn profiles for folks similar to you and/or in
O*NET in your summary, skills, and job description.
Use all the available character counts in the summary,
skills and job descriptions to put in as much information
     as possible.
Make sure your LinkedIn profile matches what you put
     into your resume.
     Get endorsements.
© Robin’s Resumes®, 2011, www.robinresumes.com Page 17
Keywords for LinkedIn and other Social
                  Media - 2
Keywords are also needed for other Social Media.
Recruiters passively use Google / Bing / Twitter /
     Facebook searches for candidates.
Have a blog, publish articles and use the keywords you
identified in the articles and in the tag headers.
Have a Facebook profile similar to your LinkedIn profile.
Use BranchOut and other programs with the keywords to
     network for jobs on Facebook.
Use Twitter on subjects using the keywords.
Set up other social media to be found on the Internet
using the keywords (more than 2 hour presentation).
© Robin’s Resumes®, 2011, www.robinresumes.com Page 18
Search for Jobs using Keywords
Now that you know the keywords you have experience in
     – search for the jobs using those keywords on job
     boards.
Search LinkedIn and the Internet for folks with those
keywords in their profiles / resumes to network with
     them.
If a job has keywords you do NOT have experience in,
do not apply for the job.
For Example: Even though my experience was close, I would not
have applied for the job above, since I did not have dry milling
          experience.

Keywords for ONLINE Job Applications
Most resumes (even if you network) are entered into
     Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).
These systems “read” your resume and automatically fill
out fields. The systems do not like highly formatted
resumes – prefer text resumes that are flat.
To best ensure a company will select your resume, you
must format the resume correctly (no tables and cleanly
     formatted sections) to be read.
They look for specific information, including keywords.
The keywords may not be exactly what a human picks
out for the resumes. You must have the keywords to
have the best chance of selection.

  • 19. Search for Jobs using Keywords Now that you know the keywords you have experience in – search for the jobs using those keywords on job boards. Search LinkedIn and the Internet for folks with those keywords in their profiles / resumes to network with them. If a job has keywords you do NOT have experience in, do not apply for the job. For Example: Even though my experience was close, I would not have applied for the job above, since I did not have dry milling experience. © Robin’s Resumes®, 2011, www.robinresumes.com Page 19
  • 20. Keywords for ONLINE Job Applications Most resumes (even if you network) are entered into Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These systems “read” your resume and automatically fill out fields. The systems do not like highly formatted resumes – prefer text resumes that are flat. To best ensure a company will select your resume, you must format the resume correctly (no tables and cleanly formatted sections) to be read. They look for specific information, including keywords. The keywords may not be exactly what a human picks out for the resumes. You must have the keywords to have the best chance of selection. © Robin’s Resumes®, 2011, www.robinresumes.com Page 20
