I chose to do my Community Engagement experience at Tree Street Youth in Lewiston, Maine. The mission of Tree Street is:
To support the youth of Lewiston–Auburn through programs rooted in academics, the arts, and athletics in a safe space that encourages healthy
physical, social, emotional, and academic development while building unity across lines of difference.
Upon reading this mission statement on their website, I determined that Tree Street was a place that I wanted to spend my Community Engagement
hours at. Tree Street is a nonprofit, after school organization serving the youth in the Lewiston–Auburn area. The services they provide are Afterschool,
Arts + Athletics, Summer Youth Program, StreetLeaders, and B.R.A.N.C.H.E.S. All of these programs are offered at Tree Street with no cost to the
families.
One of the important figures at Tree Street is Megan Guynes. Megan is the Program Director. Megan describes Tree Street as "a place where "you fall in
love by chance, but you stay in love by choice." Judging simply off of my email exchanges with Ms. Guynes, I could tell how passionate she was
about the program. I could also tell how excited she, and members of the staff, get about outside volunteers.
I could tell from our initial email exchange that I was going to be involved in a hands on volunteer experience, which is what I wanted to do from the
beginning. When it comes to children and youth communities, the best way to understand them is to interact with them. On my first day, I arrived
before the K–5 kids got out of school; therefore, I got to volunteer one hour of my time at B.R.A.N.C.H.E.S. This program assists high school
students with numerous amounts of things from homework, to career readiness, to college applications. During my time here, I was able to assist
one girl in particular. She was a 16 year old Somali woman who was filling out an online job application for the first time. I remember how excited
she was when we finished the first one and she eagerly found another she wanted to apply for. The wonderful thing about her was she was patient with
me too, as she could tell I had never helped someone with this before.

My placement is with Nutrition for Learning (NFL) which is a program the provides breakfast to all students (regardless of socioeconomic status), so
that they have the opportunity to eat breakfast which fuels their learning in school. I have my placement at a local public school in the Waterloo

I was surprised and touched by Nancy's experience and commitment with the organization. Coming into this placement I was hoping the volunteers
were just excited as I was, but I did not anticipate just how committed people like Nancy would be. This organization, the school, the volunteers, and
the children are her community. Her enthusiasm and kindness sets a positive precedent and tone of the experience. I look forward to my Monday
mornings because I know I get to chat with Nancy and feed off her positivity and excitement for each breakfast program. This atmosphere is not only
reflected in the volunteers but also in the participants (the children). They are excited to share what they have done the week before, excited to play
games and make crafts with you and they love talking about their favourite foods. This interactive experience is far more rewarding then I ever thought
possible.

At Santa Maria College, we are educated to treat others with respect and to always help out and lend a helping hand to those who are in need. To
show this in the community, Santa Maria Students actively provided volunteer work to organisations, in hope to build confidence, character and
respect for others. This year I volunteered at Scotch College, and helped out a Grade 2 teacher with many different tasks, that would have been a
struggle and challenge to achieve alone. Having my service here was a great eye opener to the how much passion and effort employees put into their
jobs, to ensure the greatest possible experience for those who they help. So by learning this early I aimed to do the same for Mrs Fowles when I
volunteered fro he during the holidays. At my visits to the school I was assigned many tasks, mostly helping organisation of her classroom for the new
school year. Throughout the days at my service activity, I completed filing work, marking, cleaning and helped carry heavy loads of books, stationary,
are classroom furniture. This organisation has been able to provide an intellectual and personal challenge programme in keeping with the best traditions
of liberal education. Scotch promotes individuality, opportunity, equity and excellence. Their mission is to develop young men with strength of
character, self–understanding, a passion for sustained learning and spiritual inquiry who will become active members of the global community.
One of the principals of social justice that I addressed was that children may receive a strong education and are taught strong morals and beliefs.
By having my own experiences in receiving an education I have learnt that students are in desperate need for a good, organised learning area and a
caring and loving learning environment. People can often label the need for a good and proper education as not a high priority, however is not the
case. Through my service I aimed to provide lending hand and help to address and improve this issue in society by starting at the college. By the end, I
was pleased with myself myself that I had been able to really make a differences to Mrs Fowles, and that I was able to unload a large stress off her

BACKGROUND Community service is a voluntary work that its primary focus is to provide back to the society and working to help and uplift a
positive community. This community service course gives students the opportunity to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service
to those who need it most in the community in which it builds a relationship between us the students and the community. The main aim of this
community service course is to make students not to forget or neglect the community that is around them and show or teach them how to respect
what it is they have and appreciate life as well as view life from a different angel from other people's perspectives of which is their normal everyday

Community Service is a huge part of who I am. Since an early age I have been volunteering within my community through my Methodist church.
When I turned 13 and I was old enough to go on a mission trip I was able to dedicate a week of my life to helping others and it completely
transformed my life. Ever since that first trip I have gone on a mission trip every year, each time traveling further from home. My first mission trip
was in the summer 2013 following the Black Forest Wildfire to the Colorado Springs area. While there we worked to clear debris, replant trees and
dig ditches to guide rainfall away from the surviving homes. Members of the community joined with my church group to complete these tasks.
The trip was nothing like I expected; the work days were hard and long but allowed me to meet and get to know so many new people. Even though
this trip was over 4 years ago, I still keep in touch with many of the people I met on the trip with. The manual labor accompanied by the close
proximity and gratification of volunteer work bonded a small group of strangers into a family. I came back from this trip wanting to volunteer a
much as possible. To do this I joined two clubs focused on community service: FCCLA and Key Club. I also continued volunteering at my church
through community clean ups, soup kitchens, and sunday school. The next summer, a similar size group and I drove down to Alamosa Colorado
to help service and rebuild an elderly woman's house. In Alamosa I had the privilege of meeting the sweetest woman. Her name was _____, a
handicapped widow struggling to keep up with her home. While there we pulled weeds, tore down and rebuilt a shed, repaired siding and painted
her home. In between jobs I was able to get to know ______ and learn about her life; She lived through the great depression and worked out of her

dynamic interconnected society that has many moving parts that each operate dependently with each other. If our world was a vehicle, the many
individuals, cadres and groups that coexist with each other, would have some sort of role in this machine. Despite the different pieces differing in
the function or they play in society, they are still considered to make up a part of a whole. Therefore, as a society and as an individual community
service helps to maintain the whole that we are part of. It was my upbringing in Swaziland that taught me the importance of helping within my
community and I was excited for the opportunity to do the same in Kenya at the Total Rehab Center for Disabled Children. Located off Thika
Road Highway in Kasarani, Nairobi, the Center was established with the aim of providing a home to children with cerebral palsy, degenerative
diseases and other mental disabilities. It was founded by Teresia Njeru, a professionally trained teacher from the Special Education and Professional
Studies College in Kenya. Teresia saw a need and desire to dedicate her life to help. The house she rented began as a humble refuge for children with
extreme mental and physical disabilities, but now currently hosts over 30 children and even a few young adults from all over the country. The Center
is registered as a Community–Based Organization and has been functional for over six years. The main objective is to enhance the welfare of the
physically and mentally impaired through empowerment, treatment, rehabilitation and more. Teresia hopes to see her organization blossom into a lead
rehabilitative center in order to better ensure the quality of life of those in need. The Center promotes the following values of: Professionalism through
a commitment to determinately help those in need with knowledge and care. Team work and commitment through collectively working within and
outside the center to aid those in need. Diversity by recognizing and understanding differences. Integrity and accountability by adhering to the ethical

What do you think of when you hear about a community? My first thought was that a community had to be a small group of people that share a
common interest, but why can't a community be a large group of people with things in common? I understand it can be. A community can be a large

As a chair member in the National Art Honors Society, I organized five community service events in my junior year. Each event worked with a new set
of people –– classmates, community members, elderly–– throughout the West Chester area. Through these events I gained a sense of what community
is all about; diversity, respect, and compassion are huge components of a healthy community. Oddly enough, I had never applied what I learned about a
community to the place I spend most of my time: my high school. The election produced high tensions at Rustin as the media encouraged people to

Not in attendance were the people shouting nasty things in the hallway and the students who needed translators for their voices to be heard. While
these students were not at the equity meeting, they were still in the hallway.
After this realization, I felt like I finally had a good way to bridge the gap between fellow students. Inspired to change my school back to the
supportive and inclusive place I knew it to be, I designed a program called the "Diversity Discussion" where freshman and sophomores, then juniors and
seniors would be mixed up in tables in the gym and encouraged to share their stories respectfully through specific guidelines. There would be language
teachers to help everyone communicate their stories, "I am" poem templates on the tables to make sharing or brainstorming one's story a little easier,
and trained equity teachers and members monitoring conversations to make sure they were friendly and insightful, not hateful and hurtful. The other
high schools in our district handled the situation more impulsively by doing walkouts. Those were short–term and political solutions. I was determined
to evoke real change without getting political.
Though I believed in my idea, I wasn't sure our principal would believe there was a problem or that my solution would be taken seriously. I decided

Conclusions
Within the Service Learning Project, I have learned quite a few things. I have learned that I know a lot more about history then I ever imagined I

Saturday, October 7, 2017, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm I volunteered with the organization Habitat for Humanity at NAZ. I was accompanied by six
students from the group Blue Key Honor Society that morning, to the residence of a man whose home was in need of renovations and cleaning.
Greg Webb from the organization Habitat for Humanity was the main coordinator of the event and he assigned each of us a job. Before beginning
the service we received a detailed procedural description of what was to be done and how to go about doing it efficiently and securely. The tools
and protective material we were to use, such as gloves and goggles were provided to us by Greg before beginning. To begin with, the first half of
the service I was scraping off dry and damaged caulk from the exterior surroundings of the trailer home. I also helped Greg measure and cut boards
to replace the flooring of the patio and steps leading up to the front door. The rest of my time in the service I helped two other students scrub and
power wash the exterior surface of the home as a result of an accumulation of mold and algae over the years. My reason for partaking in this
specific service was due to the revelation brought on by my best friend. Every Saturday morning while I spent most of the day in bed, my best
friend Amber, who is also my roommate, would come home after doing some sort of volunteer or community service with her group, Blue Key
Honor Society. I had a moment of personal reflection when I thought to myself, "while I am here in bed, spending my free time resting, Amber is
going out and making a difference in the world". At that moment I realized that I had to evaluate my personal values. Later I talked to Amber and she
encouraged me to join her on the weekends to participate with her group. Although I completely enjoyed my lazy weekends in bed, I understood that
spending my free time like that was selfish and ultimately not the best use of my time. Overall, helping others has always been something that I enjoy
doing, so it did not take much consideration on my part to decide on participating in the volunteer work. In the end, I was glad that I did because the

Why I Need Community Service
Imagine struggling to afford the 'mandatory' three meals you're supposed to consume a day. It would be hard and stressful right? I met over one
hundred hungry people that have to feel this emotion every day of their life, struggling to provide enough food to make a meal, fulfill their hunger, and
stay healthy. On October 17th my senior year of high school I volunteered at a place called "Broad Street Ministry" a Christian based community
church. They have many community service opportunities that you can get involved with. I helped with feeding the homeless or those who cannot
afford to eat. A teacher at my high school introduced me to this opportunity and I took away a lot of memories I will cherish with this event.
On October 17th myself and five other students loaded a van with our health teacher and headed off to Philadelphia. Personally, I volunteered with
this event just for community service hours at first but after I left the event I walked away with more than just some hours that I could write on
paper, I walked away with life lessons and a heavy heart. We got off the bus at our destination around 9:00 AM to help set up the equipment we
were using for the day. As we set everything up I thought that we overdid it because we many tables pushed together forming a long line each table
full of food followed by coolers of soda and water. After we got done setting up we had a brief meeting with a head leader of the Broad Street
Ministry simply thanking us and giving us a run down of the day. I didn't think the event would last too long and no way there would be that many
people coming to get food. I put on the mandatory clothing items we had to wear and got in my place to help out. Noon is when everything started
and people started forming a line with plates in hand. More and more people got in the line and eventually we opened everything up to start
serving people. By the time we started serving there had to be at least 100 people in line, I have only ever saw this happen on TV or in magazines,
never personally. There was such a diverse group of people that came to this event. I noticed the way each persons face lit up when they filled their
plate with what they were served, even if they did

Service Reflection For A Community
For my service reflection paper and caring and teaching component, I volunteered with the "Youth Stand Tall (YST)," Hope Grace Opportunity, Inc., in
two different areas. First, I served as a counselor and mentor for the students at the Franklin K. Lane Educational Campus, which encompassed five
different schools on the campus. The class size is approximately 10 to 15 students and the subject ranges from learning about themselves to giving
back to their community and mentoring others. The YST is a community intervention program geared towards helping and enriching the lives of our
youth while also teaching them sisterhood and brotherhood. The ultimate mission was to fill the gaps in our children's lives by providing a range of
programs, services, and activities that would mainly be led by the YST student body. Therefore, teaching them leadership, responsibility, commitment,
and dedication were the essential teaching components and tools/strategies to become more productive and caring adults. I volunteered and
participated in conflict resolution, bullying workshop, and proactive methods on decision making. During our first week, we ate pizza, cookies and
drank punch together while the YST staff presented the community intervention program initiative. The program also provided recreational
programs such as a poetry club, fellowship, and a website where participants can reach out and help other youth in need. We added a guest speaker
and took the children on field trips where they learned social manners. Along with these services, we added two evening sessions teaching English as
a New Language (ENL) on campus. These sessions were free of charge to the community. The ENL classes were instrumental for the students who in
many cases were the parents of some of our children in the YST program...creating an environment that allows ELLs (and all students) to be
comfortable taking risks on campus. In essence, the ENL classes were so good that we added an extra day to the curriculum. Many strategies were
used to support and foster the student's language development, a win–win situation for all! My second area was using tips, techniques, and strategies
for our youth to write a winning resume. The strategies I used were

On Wednesday October 10 2017, all Freshmen boarded buses to perform community service for the sick, elderly, children, Earth, and the environment.
For Freshman service day, I went to the Children's Discovery Museum. At the Museum, I helped prepare and create projects for the children to
complete about la DГa de los Muertos, of the day of the dead. In addition to helping with the crafts, I also helped to complete the new expanded garden
in the back of the museum. However, when performing service it is important to keep in mind three fundamental aspects which make us human; how
we can use our hands, head, and opening our hearts towards other.
Our hands are the foundation of many structures, it represents actually doing of Christian faith in our daily lives. The way we use our hands is
through doing what we say we will do. For example, Jesus used his hands to feed the hungry, welcome all people, heal the sick, and console the
heartbroken. At the Discovery Museum, I used my hands to create and make activities for the children. These activities and crafts will help the
children learn about the day of the dead in fun ways. It will help make the experience more enriching and memorable. I also used my hands to shave
trees to make sure that no child would get splinters or hurt themselves in the huts. Once opened, the garden will be a place for the children to learn
about the Earth and its resources. It will help them learn to be stewards of the Earth like Jesus asks us to be.
Christian faith also asks us to open our hearts. In opening our hearts, we are living the Greatest Commandment as Jesus lived it. The Greatest
commandment wants us to love us God with all our strength, heart and mind, and our neighbors as ourselves. God created us to live as one
community in unity as his people; to love, serve, and help other. The Discovery Museum helped me fulfill the Greatest Commandment when I cared
for all the activities and crafts I created so that it would last a long time. I gave each activity my full attention, heart, and strength to make sure it is
usable and make the child happy. The service helped me open my heart more because we are all God's children; we are all equal and deserve to be
treated respectfully the way we

The community service that I had done was, I worked with the High School Wilderness Club during the events that they do for Hamburg and
surrounding areas. For most of the events I helped out by setting and cleaning up the trash cans, barricades and signs that had to be put out before and
after the events, and during the events I would work by making sure the trash cans were not getting too full or just to make sure that everything was
running smoothly. I chose this work because I am a member of the Wilderness Club and had originally only joined the club because of all the fun
things they do throughout the year. After being told that I had to docommunity service to go on the fun trips, I said why not, if I want to do the fun
things, then I guess I'll have to do the work involved. I hoped to learn the different values of the community and also to get to know more people in the
school and community. All of the work that I had done was with groups of people, so that gave me the opportunity to make new friends and get to
know them better. I also hoped to learn that just because you are doing work does not mean that it will be boring. Every time I was working I
always had fun, and it was a quite enjoyable time. I went into the project thinking I just have to do this to get it over with so I can graduate, but I
ended up to really enjoy what I had to do. I believe that our school making it a requirement to complete service hours is a great way for the younger
members in the community to start to learn what all goes into the events that are put on each year. It is also a great learning opportunity for the
community to see that the children are involved with what happens. Even though I have all the hours I need to graduate done, I will still be doing
community service because it is a great learning opportunity and is fun to help out the community. For my community services hours I did all of my
community I worked with the Wilderness Club with all the events that they do throughout the year. I helped with the Hamburg carnival, Easter egg
hunts, fishing rodeos, trap shoots, and Hamburger Festival. At Carnival my family brought the majority of the animals for the children to come and

Community service is a very special and important activity when it comes to wanting to not only better your community but also connect with the
community in a way that is not possible in your everyday life. For this semester I experimented with a different types of community service, it ranges
all the way from giving blood to helping out my local no kill animal shelter. Doing all of these things really opened up my eyes, it made me realize
how much our community needs our help, and if we do not put forth the effort nothing is going to change or get better. I am not saying what I did over
this semester changed anything, but I now know all the benefits of community service and hope that one day in the near future I can contribute in a
way that is beneficial to others of my community.
The very first thing I did this semester was helping my local veterans club (Veterans of Foreign Wars) out during their busy bingo nights on
Saturday. The only reason I even heard of this was because of my mother's boyfriend, he is a Navy veteran and he asked me if I could help them
out one night, and so I did. After the first time, I realized that people take Bingo very serious, people also take their food very seriously. The way I
helped them was I would go in the kitchen and basically do everything, I would take their orders, cook them their food, put their food on the tray, and
then I had to deliver the food to them because they had trouble walking. That is a lot of work for only two people,

Essay Community Service Project Reflection
The thought of community service was a bore to me before I began my volunteer work. I dreaded starting my community service although I knew I
had to do it. Where I earned my hours did not even matter to me. I just wanted to get it over with. To my surprise it was not what I expected.
Community service was not a painful experience; it was a very enjoyable and beneficial experience.
I performed my community service with Habitat for Humanity. The nonвЂђprofit organization chooses the applicant that purchases the house and
Habitat only charges them the cost of the materials. Almost every worker is a volunteer so Habitat for Humanity does not have to pay a high amount of

We shared many laughs and stories while we worked. It was satisfying to help improve these people's lives.
I took pleasure in how much I learned at Habitat for Humanity. We were doing construction so many tools were involved. On my first day I was
unaware of the names of most tools. Learning the names and functions of each tool was exciting. Being a male, I felt more confident knowing these
things. Construction involves math and clever thinking as well. On my first day I just watched as the processes took place. Eventually, I was helping
make the decisions. I even helped a volunteer build a fence and make precise measurements. The education about construction will benefit me for the
rest of my life.
The amount of respect I earned was an incomparable benefit that I received from community service. Oil companies volunteered their employees on
Saturdays and I spoke with all of them. They recognized my enrollment and scholarship achievements. Some of them see me and recognize me
around town and they ask about how my goals are going. I met people who made a huge positive impact on my life. Employees without a college
education worked full time at Habitat for Humanity, and I realized what I do not want to do with my life. During lunch breaks I spoke with the
supervisor, Alynda Best, and she explained to me the significance of hard work in college. Most importantly, I met the lady who made this opportunity

Reflection Of A Community Service
The aim of this essay is to reflect on my learning and development primarily during the process of the community service that I have done with my
team at St. Barnabas home, Klang. I will also be writing on the importance my experiences, evaluating my own development and examine the issues
encountered before, during and after October 22nd. Besides, I will be highlighting on my learning styles, role as the Vice Organizing Chairperson in my
team and how have I improved as an individual after this community service project.
Reflection
By the end of this service, I learned that my team and I are mostly action–orientated people. According to the Belbin's nine team roles model, I am a
mixture of the shapers and implementers. I could not decide on which role do I fall the most because throughout this journey, I have been dynamically
stimulating my team to give our best and training them to be both disciplined and organized (Enciso, 2012), when carrying out our individual duties.
For an example, I encouraged my team to bring in more volunteers from their circles of friends and families so that we would have more helping
hands to serve the children at the home. Besides, I also made sure that every meeting minutes are clearly typed and printed out...show more content...
Firstly, my open area is that I am both a disciplined and practical person. Secondly, my hidden area is that I seldom discuss my issues or negative
feelings to other. For example, I tried to solve the issue of compiling the videos for the final report presentation by myself without discussing the
stressful workload on the editing part to my team members. However, I am still unsure of what are my blind and unknown areas. I am still working
on being a more critical and reflective person so that I can discover more of these regions on
