4. COMMON NAME
The betel leaf is known as pan in bengali,
Ngavalli in sanskrit, vetrillai ij tamil,Tamalapak in
telugu.
ORIGIN
The betal plant is a slender,aromatic
creeper, rooting all the nodes.
The branches of the plant are swollen at
the nodes.
The plant has altrnate, heart
shaped,smooth, shinning and long stalked
leaves,with pointed apex.
5. It has five to seven ribs arising from the
base; minute flowers and one-seeded
spherical small berries.
The use of betel leaf can be traced as far
as back as two thousand years.
It is described in the most ancient historic
book of sri lanka,mahavasma, written in palli.
DISTIBUTION:
Betal is a native of central and
eastern malaysia.
6. It spread a very early dae throughout
tropical asaia and later to madagascar and
east africa
In india, it is widely distributed in tamil
nadu, madhya pradesh,west
bengal,orissa,maharashtra, and uttar
pradesh.
COMPOSITION
An analysis of the betal leaf shows it to
consist of moisture 85.4%,protein 3.1%, fat
0.85, minerals 2.3%, and carbohydrates 6.1
% per gms.
7. It minerals and vitamins contents are
calcium, carotene,thiamine, riboflavin, niacin
and vitamin c.
MEDICINAL USES:
Heating power and curative properties:
Betel leaf has been used from ancient
time as an aromatic stimulant and
antifllatuent.
It is useful in arresting secretion or
bleeding and is an aphrodidsiac.
Its leaf is used in several commom
household remedies.
8. Scanty or obstructed uniform:
Betal leaf juice is credited with diuretic
properties.
Its juice,mixed with dilute milk and
sweetened slightly helps in easing urination.
Weakness of nerves:
Betel leaves are beneficial in the
treatment of nervous palms.
Nervous exhaustion and debility.
The juice of a few betal leaves with a
teaspoon will serve as a good tonic.
A teasoon of this can be taken twice a
day.
9. Headaches:
The betel leaf has analgestic and
cooling properties.
It can be applied with beneficial results
over the painful area to relieve intense head
ache.
Respiratory disorders:
Betel leaves are useful in pulmonary
Affection in childhood and old age.
The leaf dipped in castor oil and
warmed may b e applied to the chest to
relieve cough and difficulty in breathing.
10. Constipation:
In the case of constipation a
suspository made of the stalk of betel leaf
dipped in castor oil and warmed can be
introduced in the rectum.
This is insantly relieves constipation.
Sore throat:
Local application of the leaves is
effecting in treating sore throat crushed fruit
of berry should be mixed with honey and
taken to relive irritating cough.
11. Inflammation:
Applied locally, betel leaves are beneficial
in thhe treatment inflammation such as arthritis
and orchitis that is that is inflammation of the
testes wounds.
Betel leaves can be used to heal wounds.
The juice of few leaves should be extacted
and applied on the wounds.
Then a leaf should be wrapped over a
bandaged.
The wound will heal up with a single
application within 2 days.
12. Boils:
The herb is also an effective remedy for
boils.
A leaf is gently warmed till it gets softened,
and is then coated with a layer of castor oil.
The oiled leaf is spread over the inflamed
part this leaf has not be replaced, very few
hours.
After a few applications, the boil will rupture
Draining all the purulent matter.
The application can be made at night and
removed in the morning.
13. Problems of breast milk secretions:
The application of leaves smeared with oil
is said to promote secretion of milk when on the
breast during lactation.
PRECAUTIONS:
Cancer of the mouth and lips has been
found to be more frequent in areas where the
betal chewing habit is widely prevalent.
Other ill effects of pan chewing like
dyspepsia,pyrrohoea,cacer of tongue and
cheeks have also been observed amongst
excessive chewers.
14. OTHER USES:
The betal leaves are chewed
together with betal nuts as a mastifactory.
It is simplest form, sliced betel nuts is
wrapped in a betel leaf,smeared with lime
and chewed.
When chewed after meals, its
sweetness end the breath and acts as a
gentle stimulant.
