This study examines how caregiving responsibilities for elderly family members impacts employee health and employer healthcare costs. It finds that: 1) Health costs to employers are 8% higher for employees with eldercare responsibilities, costing US employers an estimated $13.4 billion per year. 2) Employees providing eldercare are more likely to report fair or poor health and conditions like depression, diabetes, and hypertension. 3) Younger caregivers in particular face significantly higher rates of health issues like hypertension, COPD, and heart disease than non-caregiving peers.
