2. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Goal
Improve the quality and efficacy of English language education in Armenia by increasing the number of English-
language resources available in classrooms and increasing teacher proficiency with supplemental resources.
Objectives
• Secure donations of overstocked, English-language books from US and UK publishing houses
• Cover shipping costs through grants or in-kind donations from logistics companies and NGOs
• Receive official approval from the Ministry of Education to use the books in Armenian classrooms
• Form a distribution committee to conduct needs assessments, allocate books, and design M&E tools
• Form a curriculum committee to draft lesson plans and design and implement trainings of teachers
Results
• 5,860 new English-language illustrated reference books, leveled readers, and activity books donated by DK
Publishing
• Shipping costs and logistics donated by Children of Armenia Fund, Focus on Children Now, Syunik
Development NGO, and United Armenian Fund
• Ministry of Education submitted official letter approving the books for use in Armenian classrooms
• 3 distribution committees formed to administer distribution for 3 separate phases:
• Phase 1: Syunik NGO Distribution: 2,798 books distributed to 26 schools and organizations in 16
communities within Vayots Dzor region
• Phase 2: COAF Distribution: 2,567 books distributed to 33 schools and organizations in 30 communities
within Aragotsotn, Armavir, Lori, Shirak, and Tavush regions
• Phase 3: Peace Corps Distribution: 495 books distributed to 6 schools and organizations in 6 communities
within Gegharkunik, Lori, and Syunik regions
• Curriculum committee composed of 26 pedagogical experts, TEFL degree candidates, Peace Corps volunteers
and staff:
• Wrote and reviewed 27 lesson plans for the imported books, all of which are directly related to the Ministry of
Education’s national curriculum
• Designed a training seminar, which has to date been used to provide training for 74 English-language
teachers in sourcing and using supplemental resources in their classrooms
• Totals:
• 5,860 books imported and distributed
• 7,808 direct student beneficiaries
• 115 direct teacher beneficiaries
• 65 schools in 52 communities across 8 regions supplied with books
