Hampton University is back in
session for the 2015-2016 school year!
The year is expected to be an exceptional
one! Over the summer, cadets were making
developmental milestones in all grade levels.
These milestones were being taken through
various summer broadening opportunities
both within the Army and outside of the
Army.
Three cadets attended Cadet Initial
Entry Training (CIET) and thirteen cadets
attended the Cadet Leadership Course (CLC).
Along with these training opportunities
that took place in Fort Knox, Kentucky,
one cadet had the opportunity to attend Air
Assault School and successfully complete the
course. When Cadet Watson, junior biology
major from Lowell, Michigan, was asked
what he took away from his experience at
Air Assault School, he responded by saying:
“I learned how to push myself and others
around me.” He hopes to apply what he
learned there, to develop other leaders in the
pirate battalion. Additionally, Cadet Starla
McDougald-Treadewell, senior criminal
justice major from Sacramento, California,
had the opportunity to attend the Cultural
Understanding and Language Proficiency
(CULP) Program and venture off to the
country of Georgia! While at CULP, she
was given a certificate of completion for
successfully completing Mountain Warfare
School.
Along with Army training
opportunities, some cadets took the
opportunity to complete internships with a
variety of institutions that included Goldman
Sachs, Max Media Company, ESPN, and
Syracuse Biomaterial Institute. Asya Lee,
senior economics major from Manassas,
Virginia, was thankful for her opportunity to
work at Goldman Sachs and explained that
while on the internship she “gained corporate
work experience and further insight into
career opportunities.” Upon graduation, she
has been offered a full time position as a
human capital management analyst.
With all of the new skills and
knowledge developed over the summer, the
pirate battalion will continue to strengthen
this year. These diverse opportunities
and experiences will aid in the leadership
development of the future officers at our
Home by the Sea!

Question: What are your expectations for the
Battalion?
Response: “I would love for everyone to be
developed in an area whether it’s academics,
leadership, or fitness and even for students to
run along with this if they decide not to return
to the program.”
Question: What is your motto or Command
Philosophy?
Response:“Contribute to the legacy...Now!“

Question: What are your thoughts on the new school year?
Her Response: “Due to the mentorship we received from the senior
class last year, there is more commitment from my class.”
Question: What are your expectations for the Battalion?
Her Response: “The average grade point average for the battalion
will be a 3.0 and the average physical fitness score will be a 260.
Also, we will retain all cadets that join the program.”
Question: What is your motto for the school year?
Her Response: “Don’t tell me the sky is the limit, when there’s
footprints on the moon.”
Question: What are your expectations for the Battalion?
Response: I expect cadets to lead with ease and always maintain
discipline. The cadets in the battalion will be trained, mentored
and guided in every way possible to ensure that they have a basic
understanding of what it means to be a leader.
Question: What skill do you want cadets in the program to learn or
strengthen?
Response: As future officers in the United States Army our
primary job is to create solutions, and I believe that we can start
implementing that mindset right now. As cadets, we are walking
on a path toward becoming officers; therefore, it is imperative that
we learn the process of problem solving.
Question: What is your motto for the school year?
Response: “Be the change you want to see.”

Practicing Leadership in the Battalion
In Army ROTC, we provide cadets with the knowledge on skills and attributes that are needed not only in the
Army, but also in the civilian workforce. MSIII cadets began their rotational leadership positions by training a platoon
during a drill and ceremony lab. This training was designed to give new cadets an introduction to marching and calling
cadences in a formation. The MSIII class did an awesome job of leading the MSI and MSII class and accomplishing the
intent of Professor of Military Science, Cadet Battalion Commander, and the Cadet Company Commander. There will be
more lab trainings that will include more drill and ceremony, land navigation, and first aid throughout the year.

On Sunday September 20, 2015, the MSIV of the Battalion put together a Battalion Retreat for all Cadets
to enjoy food, fun, and games and ultimately bond as a program. The outcome exceeded expectations and cadets made
comments on the event such as:
“This event was fun mainly because I got to meet more of the people in the program”
“I met people I never even knew were from my area”
“This event made me realize, I now have a family away from home now too”
Since the outcome of this event was exceptional, it will continue in years to come. The Battalion Retreat truly
gave members of the program a chance to build relationships that will hopefully assist them throughout their tenure in
the program!

Battle of the Bay

On October 26, 2015 the Mighty Pirate Battalion competed in
the annual games of the Battle of the Bay against, the host, Norfolk State
University Spartan Battalion. The competition kicked off with an invig-
orating speech by Hampton University alumni, Retired General Arnold.
The first event was a relay race between the two Battalions, which encom-
passed repetitions of jumping rope, medicine ball squats, leg lifts, sand bag
flips and push-ups. The battle continued with a tug-of-war game, a basket-
ball showcase and a game of traditional basketball.
The entire event was filled with dancing, laughs and comradery
between both Battalions. The amount of cheers and screams that happened
during the games was immeasurable as each Battalion cheered on their
battle buddies just as hard as their battle’s competed in each event. De-
spite a swift change of plans due to weather restrictions, both Battalions
were able to adjust and see through to the success of another historic,
dynamic and enthusiastic competition between the two Army ROTC pro-
grams.
Although, the NSU Spartans walked away with the trophy both
Battalions were motivated and dedicated to making the event as fun as
possible for everyone involved. The ROCKS President, the sponsor of
the Battle of the Bay, was there to award NSU with the trophy. The event
concluded with lunch and all the cadets taking the opportunity to network
and build relationships with there soon to be bothers and sisters in the
United States Army Officer Corp. Many cadets were able to reconnect
relationships built at Cadet Summer Training; they were able to reminisce
on the adventures and shared memories of the excitement that took place
throughout the summer.
Hampton University’s Battalion Commander, Cadet Starla Tread-
well, expressed her enjoyment of the event and her excitement to hear
about the results of next year’s Battle of Bay that will be hosted by Hamp-
ton Army ROTC. The event is of true legacy and tradition of the relation-
ship between NSU Army ROTC and Hampton Army ROTC. This year’s
participation by both Battalion was one of true testament the great things
happening and growing within both of these great Army ROTC programs.
