1. A2 Music Video Pitch Presentation
Oh Wonder- Midnight Moon
Bradley Barnes
2. Our four potential songs
• Oh Wonder – Midnight Moon
• Taylor Swift – Wonderland
• Jess Glynne – Take Me Home
• Lucy Rose – Little Brave
• We have decided that the four songs listed above would all suit our
indie genre in which we have chosen. When talking about each song
in our group, we came to a conclusion that the most suitable song
would be Oh Wonder – Midnight Moon due to the fact that it
includes a duo, therefore we are able to have a better variation of
shots as a result and will be able to include both performance and
concept based shots throughout our music video as a result.
3. Our chosen song – Midnight Moon
Why this particular artist?
• We decided to go with this particular artist because
they produce unique videos within our indie pop
style.
• This particular song is different to other indie songs
as it is by a duo and represents their ‘lust’ for each
other. Therefore, this song has uniqueness about it as
it represent their underlying lust for each other
though the lyrics within the song adding to us having
more freedom once coming to produce our own
version of their song Midnight Moon.
4. Why this particular song?
Oh Wonder – Midnight Moon
• We chose Midnight Moon by Oh Wonder due to its unique/indie vibe
that will represent our different shot locations which we could include
as a result.
• Prior to deciding on this song we consider all features of Mise-En-Scene
and how they would influence our music video as a result. By briefly
discussing this it enabled us to have an image of how we wanted certain
aspects to be represented through our music video, for example we have
decided for any make-up to be natural in order to represent the sense of
freedom throughout our video as no make up would connote to our
audience that our female artist is self-confidence and likes natural
items.
• Therefore, this can connote that our artists are eco-friendly. Therefore,
this song will enable us to represent our artists as together, free and
unique through the use of mid-shots, close-ups and extreme close-ups
which we’re planning to use throughout our indie video.
5. How could we interpret the lyrics?
‘It’s about the fact that we are all the same people under the same moon –
we should all help each other out.’
- Josephine Van Gucht, Radio Interview
Therefore, from this quote from one of the artists, we can now get an idea
that the song is a ‘feel good song’ and is trying to unite everyone as a
result. This, therefore represents Oh Wonder as all of their music videos
for example, ‘Without You’ and ‘Drive’ also have a common theme of
‘togetherness’ throughout them. This, shows that Oh Wonder as artists
want their songs to portray happiness. We can therefore interpret the
lyrics, in particular this line , ‘We're all animals out in the dark’ which
suggests that everybody is the same (‘We’re all’), this therefore connotes
the fact that everyone is united/together whether they feel the same way
or not and that any generosity would not go unnoticed.
6. Mise-En-Scene for our indie music video
• Costume – Patterns/ everyday wear
• Lighting – Low and High key lighting
• Actors – One Male/ One Female
• Make-up – Natural
• Props – Ukele, picnic blanket, guitar, benches, bikes
• Settings – Thorndon Country Park, Drama Hall, Beach
Above are rough initial ideas whilst brainstorming different aspects
which could work well within our final video. We will use these ideas
as inspiration and will look to incorporate them in any way we can.
7. What is the genre/sub-genre of your
chosen song?
• Genre – Indie Pop
• Sub genre - Electropop, Synthpop, Alternative
Facts about indie pop music:
• Indie Pop is a genre of alternative rock that originated from the UK
in the mid 1980s with roots from the Scottish post-punk bands.
• It differs from Indie Rock to the extent that it is more melodic, less
abrasive, and angst-free.
• Its original rise to popularity started in a small photocopied
fanzines, and small shop-based record labels.
8. Other songs in that genre and some
details about their videos
• Ed Sheeran- Give Me Love
• This video is purely narrative, there is no element of performance which
seems to be common in Ed Sheeran's music videos. The video begins with girl
with wings on in an apartment who looks as if she was tragically murdered by
an arrow. It then flashes back to the girl very much alive, peering at a couple
from behind a brick wall. The narrative follows the girl as she sprouts wings
and becomes cupid, firing arrows at different people who, in effect fall in
love. But it is apparent that seeing other people in love isn’t enough for cupid.
It then cuts back to the opening scene and we see the girl who appears to bed,
until a handsome police man sees the girl and the arrow disappears showing
that she has finally found love. The narrative engages emotion and makes the
viewer feel sorry for the girl.
• Representations in this video are almost unnoticeable, the couples that cupid
hits are all different genders, races and age. The reason I use the word
unnoticeable is because they don’t make it look as if it is wrong to be a same
gender or interracial couple. The message this sends to viewers is that love is
love, and all love is right.
9. What combination of performance/concept/narrative do
you envisage for your video?
• A combination of all three types of music videos will be involved in
our final production, concept will probably be our main focus as we
feel as if we can do potentially more if we focus in on this type as it
will enable us to have more freedom with potential colours for
backgrounds in order to keep our potential audience entertained.
• We will also use elements performance videos within our final video
in order to combine the two types and so that the audience are still
engaging with our video throughout the whole duration. This will be
done with lots of different types of shots of our two artists together,
ranging from close ups to long shots.
11. Why/how could we use these potential
locations?
• Drama hall – We can use this location in order to film potential
moving images (gifs) which suit our genre and will enable us to have
a more unique feature.
• Thorndon Country Park – We can use Thorndon Country Park due
to its lovely scenery and quiet nature. By filming here we will also be
able to create a more earthy feel as a result and will again
demonstrate how our artists can be seen as eco-friendly.
• Beach – We will use a beach in order to add a different element into
our final music video as the scenery will be completely different and
will again reinforce happiness and freedom throughout our music
video.
12. What issues/problems could you have?
• Weather – Weather can be a huge problem whilst filming and
although we are able to check for weather forecasts they are not
always accurate.
• Timings – e.g. traffic could delay us from getting to some locations,
therefore as a result when we arrive the lighting may not quite be
right for that potential part of our video. This may be caused by long
queues on motorways or train strikes.
• Camera difficulties – This could delay our process if we lose any
footage, which would mean we would have to re-film which would
result in us losing valuable editing time.
