patent family data, indicates which countries are filing
the greatest number of new inventions. This
presentation will examine which
companies/establishments are possible key
innovators. The presentation will identify some key
areas relating to Environmentally Sound
Technologies (ESTs), as listed by the United Nations
Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC).

China’s Growth

• In 2022, China has roughly 7 times higher patent family (invention) count than the next highest
jurisdiction and 14.8 times higher patent family (design patents) than the next highest count
jurisdiction.
• China’s patent growth over the last decade has been directed by government policies that favor
research and development. China had 1.1 million patent applications in 2015.1
• China overtook the US in 2019 as the top source of international patent applications filed with the
WIPO, and has since consolidated the leading position. China's stellar performance in the IP sector
reflected the country's priority placed on strengthening enterprises' innovation capability and the
awareness of IP protection is paying off. It is inseparable from the country's continuous investment in
research and development over recent years, analysts told the Global Times.2
• China received 1.59 million patent applications in 2021, more than double the number received by the
United States of America.3
• China (695,946) issued the highest number of patents in 2021, followed by the US (327,307), Japan
(184,372), the Republic of Korea (145,882) and the EPO (108,799). China (+31.3%), Germany
(+22%) and India (+16.5%) also recorded a double-digit growth in patents granted in 2021.3
• A look at China’s growth based on three measures of innovation: number of grants, distribution of
invention, utility model, or design patents and number of patents filed internationally versus
domestically.4

About the Author
• Robert (Bob) March works as a patent analyst for a private firm that conducts patent
and literature searching for many fortune 500 companies and top IP law firms. Bob
holds a Qualification Certificate as a Qualified Patent Information Professional and a
Certificate in Competitive Intelligence from Drexel University. Bob began his career
indexing patents for IFI Plenum company. After a year of indexing, Bob began an over
30-year career with the DuPont company. While at DuPont, Bob began as an
agricultural synthesis chemist prior to embarking on 22 years in information science
mainly as a patent analyst in the Central Research and Development and Legal
Departments.
