TRANSGENIC ANIMALS

EXPLANATION OF THE TOPIC
What are genetically modified (GM) animals?
-A genetically modified animal is one whose genetic material has been altered
by inserting, modifying, or removing certain DNA sequences in a way that
does not happen naturally.
-Is a process carried out in order to introduce a new trait or change a
characteristic such as disease resistance in an animal. DNA is the genetic
material of an organism and carries with it the instructions for all the
characteristics that an organism inherits.
The changes made to an animal's genetic makeup can be passed
on to the next generation.
HISTORY
In 1982 the first transgenic animal was created, a giant mouse in which human growth hormone was
incorporated into its genome.
Currently, there are transgenic rats, chickens, rabbits, pigs, cows, sheep, goats, quail and fish,
although the ones that we find in greater numbers are rats and mice, which represent 95% of the
total.
UTILITY
In an astonishing advance that can make transplantation of organs from animals to
humans possible, researchers have created genetically modified pigs without the
presence of viruses that could cause disease in humans.
EXAMPLE
-Dolly the sheep was the first mammal to be cloned from an
adult cell. She was a result of a nuclear combination from a
donor cell differentiates an unfertilized and anucleated egg .
-The cell from which Dolly came was one that was already
differentiated or specialized, coming from a specific tissue,
the mammary gland, of an adult animal.
Dolly always lived at the Roslin Institute. There she
was crossed with a male to produce six babies in
total.
Dolly was euthanized due to progressive lung
disease.
PERSONAL OPINION
Our opinion is that use animals for experiments,is not good because that cause problems to
them just for the good of the humans. We should let them live life in their natural places and
not in laboratories suffering and dying.
