Research Internship opportunity
1. THE DIXON INTERNATIONAL GROUP LTD
Temporary Research Internship / Possible Consultancy opportunity.
The successful candidate will be working directly for the Deputy Chairman of the Dixon International Group Ltd (DIG) on
a specific project to do with fire safety on Indian Railways (IR).
Introduction
DIG is recognised by the Design Council as one of the UK’s 120 most innovative companies (& by definition, outstanding
by international standards). It designs and manufactures specialised construction products including bespoke solutions
to acoustic sealing for the BBC, weather sealing for the British Antarctic Survey plus other products for the Channel
Tunnel and various historical palaces. The company has innovated for the last 50 years and has an international reach.
The danger of fires on Indian Railway trains is a major problem having cost hundreds of lives and is a prescient political
issue in India at the moment. DIG has an introduction to present some revised design ideas to the Board of IR in Delhi
and to the people running their research division in Lucknow. The Deputy Chairman is looking for a very able and highly
motivated Intern to conduct some research which will feed into or supplement his presentation.
Job description
The role will involve research (mainly online) to elucidate the scale of fatalities (and injuries eg by smoke inhalation)
from fires, bombs and derailments over the previous twenty years. Research will also involve the economic costs of
these incidents and cover recent political developments on the subject of fire safety on IR at state and federal levels of
the Indian government. There may be cross-comparative analyses in a narrow set of regards with other rail systems in
comparatively developed countries. There may also be work to be done on the design and technical specifications of IR’s
railway carriages. The remit is likely to be flexible as initial and subsequent findings unfold.
Timescale
DIG already has an introduction to the Board of Indian Railways in Delhi and to the RDSO division specialising in R&D in
Lucknow. It is anxious to proceed as soon as possible with this research to maintain momentum.
Remuneration etc
It is estimated that the research may take around a week’s time and on this basis, DIG is prepared to pay £500 in the
first instance (after tax). However, if the successful candidate excels, this may be increased to £1,000 (net). Other
rewards potentially to be gained by a proven high-flyer include an expenses & time paid visit to New Delhi & Lucknow in
September 2012 to participate in the presentation, a reference accurately reflective of achievement and potentially
further employ in some form.
Application
Applications should include a statement setting out the reasons for the candidate’s interest and his or her initial
thoughts (there is no word limit) together with a CV and contact details (including phone nos) for two referees.
Applications should be sent to Charles Malcolm-Brown via cmb@dig.co.uk Enquiries: 01223 844204 / 07734 731280
