Ancient World Art – Did you know… While excavating a village near Baghdad in 1936, the mysterious 2,000 year old vase at the left was found A German archeologist performed an experiment by filling it with grape juice (as the ancients would have done), and it produced nearly 1 volt of electricity This proves our ancestors had battery technology over 1,800 years ago! It is so large (over 1,000 feet across) that archeologists cannot explain how it was made… without help from the air Why and how do you think it was made?   1. Discovered by teenagers in 1940, these caves contain some of the finest prehistoric polychrome cave paintings, dating from 17,000 BCE. The Lascaux caves were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

It depicts the Goddess Venus, having emerged from the sea as a full grown woman, arriving at the sea-shore.Reproductions and variations on Botticelli's famous painting have been numerous in popular culture, including in advertising and motion pictures: A scene in the 1962 James Bond film Dr. No with Ursula Andress rising from the sea was inspired by the painting. A stylized face of Venus is on the 10 cent Italian euro coins.
  5. A prominent element within the painting, the winged angels beneath Mary are famous in their own right. As early as 1913 Gustav Kobbé declared that "no cherub or group of cherubs is so famous as the two that lean on the altar top indicated at the very bottom of the picture.
