Job Role Description –Sound Designer
A sounddesignerisresponsible foreverythingthatthe audience hears.Theyplanandprovide the
soundeffectsinthe play.Theyfirstof all needtostudythe script inorderto pick outany sounds
that itasks for.Once theyhave decidedwhattheythinkthe soundshouldbe like theygatherthe
informationandcreate the necessarysounds.The sounddesignerneedstoensure thatthey
combine the five differentcontrollable properties:
 Pitch– The wavelengthorfrequencyof the sound
 Volume –The loudnessorquietnessof the sound
 Quality– How pitchand volume combinetogive eachsounditsowndistinctiveeffect
 Direction – The locationof the soundand how soundtravelsfromone locationtoanother
 Duration– The lengthof time thatthe soundlasts
Theyalsoneeda plot,systemlayoutanda cue sheet.Theysounddesignermustmake sure they
meetupwiththe designteamto discussthe detailsof the set.Thiswill helpthemtounderstand
betterwhere eachsoundwill come inandwhatmoodit intendstocreate.
The Sounddesignerisalsoresponsible forrecordingsoundsandmodifyingsounds.Thiscouldbe
eitherinthe studiobydoingfieldrecordings.Theyhave tomaintaingoodpeoplemanagementtoa
seniorlevel as theywillbe incharge of a team.Theymustbe able to developanduse differenttypes
of software andkeepuptodate withanynew releasedsoftware.The sounddesignermustalso
considerpropswhengatheringsoundsusingFoleyArtistry.
